Good to see him beating the Mancs yet again ... The Echo had a nice picture celebration of his time here ... Maybe they'll be adding to it next year?

Even when he's below his best he's still so calm, cool and clever -just what this promising but often painfully naive team needs.

Welbeck did a good job on him last night, which made him look poorer than he was, he was still a class above though. There was one moment where a player (I think Welbeck) was challenging him hard, and as a result Alonso was falling to the side, yet he still managed to adjust whilst falling and volley pass the ball about 25 yards perfectly to the foot of another Madrid player, he's an absolute joy of a footballer, this forum wouldn't be safe if he made a return, however unlikely, in the summer, I, and many others, would literally explode.

There's Molby, Hamman and Alonso - three midfielders who'd still be worth watching when they're strolling around in games for the over-60s. They make the game look so simple, and having Alonso here just for a year or two would teach the likes of Suso, Teixeira, Allen and others so much you couldn't put a price on it.

He's really come on as a player, he was playing it with ease last night (after he escaped the marking of Wellbeck) and was supporting the front well too, which was interesting to see at this stage of his career. He's always been excellent but right now you can see the experience to go with it. He'd be a more than interesting (re)addition for us.

Yup. Haven't seen him for a while but I looooove watching Molby play with the LFC old timers. His touch, vision and passing accuracy, long or short, is still there. What a player.

He's always looked like he's been playing the game for years for me. Fantastic positionally, great awareness and brilliant passer of the ball.

In the summer spending thread I was trying to think of which up and comer we could get that is Alonso-esque but we probably do need someone who has that experience to guide this, as Macca said, rather naive side.

The more and more I think about it, the more I'm getting my hopes up. I know he's not money ball, but he would be a fantastic addition. He's never relied on pace or drive, but has always been a great reader of the game (as you said) and a calming influence, so we could well get a few years from him, ala Pirlo.

Yep, he's exactly what we need. Rodgers has often mentioned the need for experience and leaders, he's exactly that. He's low on his contract as well, so if he did want to come home, he wouldn't cost the earth. Oh and I like Henderson, but he can get the fuck out of Alonso's number 14 shirt if it ever happened.

I said in a previous thread though that the most important decision Rodgers has to make this summer is whether he sticks or twists with Allen. This side needs a playmaker and if it's not going to be Allen, Rodgers needs to buy one in the summer as a priority.

Did I ever tell you I played against him in an Old Boy match. Rushie, mark Walters as well as Bruce Grob, and a few others. Every time I got near Molby, the ball was gone.

I have forgiven you Xabi.
Come home son.

I never really had an issue with him personally over his move. He gave everything in that last season, ok so maybe some people could point to the season before when he was below par, but that happens. He's always been respectful and I think the damage was done over the whole Barry saga.

I bet you were real understanding when girls broke up with you as well Mark.
Xabi cut me deep.

I thought he was poor last night.

The tactic of deploying Wellbeck onto him worked very well for Utd for the first 60 mins.

It was a massive compliment to Alonso that Ferguson effectively dropped Rooney cos he was so worried of Alonso dictating the game from deep.
