Cameron Brannagan

I'm not sure how genuine this is, but it should just highlight how big a talent this kid is.

Had he been playing in Europe, I think he his rep would've been similar to the likes of Tielemans and Neves. England just doesn't rate that style of midfielder highly enough.

I hope he figures majorly in the first team next season.

Barca have certainly been scouting him for the best part of a year.

Wasn't it reported about 2 weeks ago that an improved contract was in the works ?

What type of midfielder is he that isn't rated in England?
Tough-tackling/high energy CMs are generally rated more highly in England than CM 'passers'. The opposite is generally true in Europe.

Thought that was a fairly obvious point. Can give several examples over the last decade.

That bias is also generally reflected in how youngsters are rated coming through. Case in point being Rossiter, who was regarded by most as a better prospect than Brannagan. Except Brannagan has impressed more in the first team. Indeed, Rossiter is now at Rangers while Brannagan is still here attracting interest from Barca and Real.

So what is your point? We incorrectly regarded Rossiter as a better prospect than Brannagan, but now we've come to our senses because Rossiter left to join Rangers and Brannagan is still in the reserves?

Is this some kind of wider point about UK scouting and coaching?

Well, I still like high energy, tough tackling midfielders. Players like Gerrard.

How is Brannagan still in the reserves? He made 11 first team appearances in the second half of the season. Klopp has raved about him, and now Barca and Real are interested. The indications are that we now probably do consider him as the best academy prospect.

As for the larger point, you mention Gerrard. He was a force of nature as an attacking midfielder, but never quite a great CM. Dele Alli and Barkley have similar qualities (obviously not as good). But if England try and shoe-horn them into central midfield like they did with Gerrard, they'll have similar results.

It stems from the idea that energy and tackling are more important in central midfield than passing, and I find that absurd. That's the logic behind Carrick having fewer caps than Hargreaves and Barry. Behind Scholes retiring at 30, while still bossing PL midfields for a decade after.

Also the logic behind the harebrained idea of replacing Alonso with Barry. Also the reasoning behind the idiots who said Mascherano was more important to us than Alonso.

This is all in the face of results as well - English teams were dominant in Europe in the last decade. Coincided with several outstanding midfields with a passer at the heart of them - Scholes, Alonso, Carrick, Essien, Fabregas, Petit, Modric etc. Even enforcers like Vieira and Keane were extremely patient and disciplined passers (unlike Gerrard).

That player had disappeared from England since the turn of this decade. I'm not surprised English teams have struggled in Europe since. There hasn't been a top class midfield in England with the ability to control the pace of the game for a while.

I'm really hopeful about Klopp bringing in a player like that - he brought through Sahin and Gundogan at Dortmund, and also signed Weigl (who's going to be a marvelous player).

I can see him being excited about Brannagan since he is a player in a similar mould (not saying that he will be as good as any of the players above - only commenting on the playing style).

Edit: I'm not refusing to acknowledge players like Kante and Mascherano, who've had great success in England as very defined role-players in midfield. Except if I were to construct my ideal midfield, I'd rather have a sitting DM like Makelele/Hamann alongside a passing playmaker.

I'd snap their hand off for 5.5m plus bonuses.
That would be utterly absurd. We'd be able to sell him for 5 million at any point in time later even if he turns out to be no better than Danny fucking Guthrie. 5 million buys you shit in this market.

if you spend wisely and you have quality scouts it gets you good players, especially players in last years of their contract.

dortmund recently got marc barta for about 6m.

I say get the money for brannagan now and put it towards a player like dahoud or zielinski....don't want to wait around 3-4 years then give him away for free ala suso or texeira.

I'd prefer to keep him.

He's a very good prospect and the next two years will tell us whether he can be a good Premiership player.

Ah, a true cultured, footballing aesthete, resplendent on your lofty throne, despairing at the thuggish troglodytes of English football and their love of awful stuff like tackling and running.

Sahin was a fucking fat, lazy useless cunt
