Hodgson has also been forced to apologise if his recent comments about Glen Johnson have been interpreted as a criticism of the right back. The manager said his player was not performing like an England regular but with reports claiming the comments have angered Johnson, Hodgson has sought to defuse the row.

"We all want Glen Johnson to find his England form, but that has nothing to do with him being injured at the moment," Hodgson said. "That was just a general comment that I think I was entitled to make.

"We have a player with ability and we are hoping he is going to bring that ability to the team because we want to use it help us win matches. It is no good being a player with great ability if you are not bringing that on to the field of play.

"We know Glen can and will do that but first and foremost Glen has to get fit and I'm hoping that will be the case by next Sunday [at home to West Ham] because he has made good progress. He as well as I knows this season he hasn't reached that form very often - it amazes me that when you make a statement of such obvious voracity people want to make headlines out of it.

"Everyone is saying what I am saying. I hope I am honest and I hope the players are honest. I didn't realise I had been accused of criticising him; I don't normally criticise my players and I'm sorry if that has been suggested."

Roy fucking sucks, get off the fence either criticise him or dont. Criticising then apologising makes you look a bit stupid really >🙁

and he should know how the press will twist things, don't give them any ammo

Yeah, that looks seriously weak. Lame duck.

It's quite amusing yet a little sad when our opinion as fans swing from one end of the pendulum to the other, at every media article we read.

Yesterday it was Glen's fault. Today it's Roy's fault. Who's fault is it tomorrow ?

The media sells and thrives on our gullibility and our fickleness.

Yeah, that's the worst thing of all.

If he felt he had to rough on JOhnson (who has been shit), then fine.

(even though it would probably have been better behind closed doors).

BUt once it's done, stand by it.

This just makes him look weak.

What player is going to respect him now?

Does he even fucking think before he says something.

This just confirms that he's weak as fuck and hasn't the balls to take charge of anything. The job of managing LFC really has got the better of him and for his own and our sanity he should just accept that and leave.

Don't fucking apologise. Pathetic.

i can only imagine the carnage that would ensue if hodgson ever complained about a dirty fork in a restaurant.

Haha, yesterday many were praising Budgie's outspoken approach and honesty.

One day later, Budgie makes all of those posters look like cunts with his lastest execrable, mealy-mouthed exercise in gutless back-tracking

He will go down in history as the most worst, most reviled manager in Liverpool history.

Roy was wrong to criticise Magic in the media and looks intent as ever to make himself look like a fool out of his depth!

It was a sad day when we appointed him.

I don't think anybody was praising him; and a weak manger certainly shouldnt have resorted to public criticism.

The comments you speak of were suggesting that it was possible that private criticism had already been tried and failed.

To show weakness now just compunds the mistake though.

Don't think he was wrong to have a go at him.

He was fucking stupid though to do it though if he didn't realise it was going create waves in the media and then not have the conviction to back it up.

He hasn't quite figured out he's not managing Fulham any more where no-one gave a fuck what he said, or did... short of not getting them relegated.

I'm not for him... and if he was booted tomorrow it wouldn't harm or chances of getting "anything" out of this season in any way, shape form or manner.

... that being the case... there's absolutely no reason for the useless old duffer being at the club.

A second 'apology' in quick succession within wks? :-[

Reports emerged today claiming Johnson is unhappy at Anfield and that his relationship with the manager has deteriorated.

Just a few hours earlier, after the 2-0 defeat at Stoke, Hodgson said he stood by his comments, although they were not meant as a direct criticism of the player.

"We all want Glen Johnson to find his England form, but that has nothing to do with him being injured at the moment," he said.

"That was just a general comment that I think I was entitled to make.

So the useless old duffer has forgotten Johnson's been injured for the last month... and someone pointed out that was the reason Johnson's not been playing well of late.

GLEN JOHNSON is ready to fight to recapture his best form after reports that he is heading for showdown talks with Roy Hodgson were dismissed.

Liverpool boss Hodgson was critical of the way Johnson has started the current campaign when he was asked about his fitness following Wednesday night’s 1-1 draw with Wigan Athletic.

Johnson has missed the last three matches with a groin strain that surfaced before his old club Chelsea came to Anfield last Sunday and was not in the squad that was beaten 2-0 at Stoke this weekend. It had been claimed that Hodgson’s public rebuke of Johnson had angered him so much that he had asked his advisers to set up a meeting with Liverpool’s director of football strategy Damien Comolli.

However, it is understood that is not the case at all.

Hodgson said: “To be frank, he has not performed up to now to the level I would expect of him. You would have to ask him the question, ‘Do you think you are playing at top form and are you playing like the best right-back in the country for your club?’

“If he says ‘yes’, we will have to agree to differ. And if he says ‘no’, then you have to ask the question, why not?â€

Johnson has another two and half years left on his contract and is not actively looking to move, even though Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in him. Furthermore, Liverpool – who are making no comment on the matter – do not have a chief executive in place at present to take care of any contractual issues.

Johnson will remain at Melwood this week to continue receiving treatment on his groin problem after he was not named in the England squad that will play France in a friendly at Wembley on Wednesday night.

Maybe he tought he had done some tactical decision by dropping him?? ;D

If we do indeed sell GlenJo, i would like us to sign Van Der Wiel...that RB who played for holland in the final. He was pretty good.

Selling Johnson would be ridiculous, we're gonna get no where near what we paid for him. But Roy's doing a great job of alienating him.

He should never be criticising him publically like this.

Glen Johnson's future at Liverpool has never been called into question, according to Roy Hodgson.

It had been suggested that the England defender was unhappy at comments from the Kop boss concerning his club form, leading to widespread speculation that he may consider a move away from Anfield during the winter transfer window.

Earlier this week former team mate Alberto Aquilani openly encouraged Juventus to bid for Johnson in January but Hodgson insists that there has never been any doubts in his mind about the 26-year-old's presence in the side when fully fit.

He said: "My relationship with Johnson has been good since I came to the club.

"He's always played in the team when he's been fit.
Unfortunately he's had a period where he's been injured.

"Obviously someone in his camp took umbrage with something I said, which is unfortunate, but as far as I'm concerned he's the Liverpool and England right-back and we're very happy to welcome him back into the team now he's fit again."
I agreed with him speaking out though (not that it means I think he's any good), but don't then fucking backtrack on it.
His "speaking out" was a sign of his weakness - it was more of a whinge than an expression of grave dissatisfaction from the point of view of the boss holding all the cards - he was too soft to stick up for Johnson when questioned and he was too soft to really go against him.

He's just done the same there.

He's an old, wet, fart.

"Obviously someone in his camp took umbrage with something I said, which is unfortunate, but as far as I'm concerned he's the Liverpool and England right-back and we're very happy to welcome him back into the team now he's fit again."

Somebody needs to put this old fucker out of his misery.

What a spineless cunt

I wonder if he's been told to try and repair the damage, the way he fairly obviously was after what he said about Rafa.

Either way, he should remember the old Army advice - "when you're in an 'ole, stop diggin'."

On Glen Johnson's return and the prospect of using him on the right side of midfield...

I believe football is relatively total these days, so a full-back can move one step up and someone who plays wide midfield can take one step back. Glen Johnson has the qualities to play lots of positions but I have not even considered it because there is no reason to do so. We have other players in the wide positions that we can use. For me, he is a specialist right-back and a very good one too. If you have someone like that then there is no need to consider changing his position.

Lets not get ahead of ourselves! Its West Ham he's playing against!!

Good performance so far from him. However, he still needs to raise his game.

Roy was right to have a go and should against all under performing players. Just not in the media.
