Bye Johnson?

Time was when I'd have said this kind of comment should be kept under wraps regardless of circumstance, and I still prefer it that way, but you have to wonder - have other things been tried without success, leaving this as the last tactic left?

Yeah, I agree completely with that.

It's much better that this is done in private, but it's not certain whether that's already been tried.

I'm still of the opinion that johnson will trive in an attacking team...which will probably mean he'll have to move to one.

Johnson if he is bombed out of here will be suffering the fate of being dumped by a big club for the second time.

Maybe he's more comfortable at a smaller club where he can swan around acting the big man without the consistent performances to back it up.

It seems rather odd that when he criticized GlenJo in public, yet showing his support for Poulsen.

one (of the many) reasons I despise the guy.

Never stopped you getting worked up in the past Neil. 🙂

Anyway being honest I've never rated him. He just gets too many of the basic things a defender should be good at badly wrong.

panicking over doomsday senarios is what I do 😉

I think johnson is a top class attacking player who's flaws are being accentuated in an overly defensive system.

That must be why he spends most matches ambling around counting the blades of grass.

When exactly was that then? He's got to be one of the most dynamic fullbacks around covering more ground than most.

He's going through a bad spell of form (name me a player who doesn't at some point) in a system that patently doesn't play to his strengths. He's shown enough before for us all to know that he's a top quality fullback with potential to improve.

And like KopPoNok said, if Roy's comfortable criticising Johnson, what the fuck is he doing saying how misunderstood Poulson is? Or saying how most of his own on/off field decisions this season haven't been worthy of a Liverpool manager either.

Spidey, while I agree with your basic point about Magic, you have to admit he's been appallingly bad this season, irrespective of the team's tactics. It's been said several times, but he really does look stoned. Not hard to imagine a few 'lifestyle problems' going on in the background.

History is repeating itself

"My problem at Inter was Hodgson, Roy Hodgson. He wanted me to play as a forward when I'm a defender – I prefer to have space ahead of me to run into rather than be a winger already up there; for me it's better to have 80 metres to play in than 20. I didn't like the system or where Hodgson wanted me to play in it. He wanted me further up the pitch, sure, but stopped, still, rigid. The Copa America was coming up and I was playing at left-back for Brazil, so I wanted to play there for Inter too. I had to leave because I didn't want to jeopardise my chances with the national team. If I couldn't play the way I do I wouldn't be able to play for Brazil. I spoke to Massimo Morratti [the Inter president] to see if he could sort things out and it soon became clear that the only solution was to leave."

Roberto Carlos

If only he had a manager who would 'put his arm around him'.

He scores on average 1 goal in every 10 premier league games.

Basically the club need a (more) defender like that.

That stuff from Roberto Carlos is interesting for two reasons. One is the insight it gives into Roy's approach (at that time anyway). The other is that it's a very succinct summary of the reasons why IMO the "play Magic at RM" campaign is barking up the wrong tree.

When was that?

Napoli last week.

I actually think he's having a tough time because of a lack of form and rustiness from injury; but to blithely blame his amblingness on defensive tactics alone is ludicrous.

He has been so slow on the pitch that it beggars belief, in fact 'amble' is the best way to describe it.

I see it like this;

we attack> we play to his strength> he contributes> he gains confidence> he improves

that's why I blame the system;

we defend> we expose his flaws> he becomes a liability> he loses confidence> he deteriorates

obviously 'some' of the blame lies with player but johnson has shown (in a red shirt) he is better than this.

So we change everything to accommodate an out of form, unfit defender who can't defend ?

I never said we should change I said why I think he is struggling.

I wouldn't give up on him just yet lads. He is one of the best right backs in the league and 'has' to regain some form and confidence. He looks to have trimmed down during his injury and we could do with his pace and attacking intent.

He has been very sluggish so far this season but I wouldn't be quick to offload him. I read a crap article how Spurs would be interested in him. It would be hell to watch a fit Johnson bombing down the right with Bale reaking havoc on the opposite flank.

Let's give Glen a chance to get fit and prove to us why he is arguably the best right back in the league.

I'm not Avvy. I've said he's going through a bad spell of form (as all players do at some point, and that the change in set-up isn;t helping.

I agree, he is a a good player.

The trouble is a lot of it's up to him to show us what he can do 🙁

Although I do think that the defensive tactics Spidey keeps harping about are actually probably helping Johnson whilst he hopefully regains his form or fitness.

At the moment, it's possible Johnson wouldnt be able to play a 'high line'.

One of the worst Rafa's transfers.
We badly needed a striker and he splashed £35M+ on Aquilani and Johnson. Criminal
Biggest reason why we are where we are now.
