Johnson has been restricted to one start in Liverpool's past seven games by injury, and will again be absent at Stoke City this evening because of an adductor strain. Even before his fitness problems, however, the 26-year-old had jeopardised his first-team place with several woeful displays and Hodgson's public rebuke indicates Liverpool's new owners may be willing to listen to offers for the right-back in January. The manager said: "He's the England right-back and if he plays like that one would expect him to come back in. But then he'd have to play like the England right-back and up to now, to be quite frank, he's not performed – very often at least – to the level I'd expect of him.

"You would have to ask him the question: 'Do you think you're playing at top form and are you playing like the best right-back in the country for your club?' If he says yes obviously we will have to agree to differ and if he says no, then you'd have to ask the question: 'Why not?'"

If someone's playing a like a cunt (which he is), call them out on it. If they don't like it, leave.

The Glengarry Glen Ross speech sums it up quite nicely.

Yeah, but you call him on it in training, not by taking shots in the press. He's been around long enough to know what kind of rumours a comment like this can start. He could have easily said that Johnson won't walk straight in because the team have been defending well and Kelly and Carra have played very well at right back. Still a dig of sorts, but not as blatant.

Do you honestly believe that?

He did need a kick up the ass, not necessarily in public. He's obviously been lazy, there's no excuse for not being at peak fitness for a professional athlete.

Does this go for every player? Call the out through the media? It's a shit tactic George. Johnson does need a kick up the arse to get himself into gear and hopefully this will do it. However, if someone is off form they shouldn't be 'called out' everytime in the press by the manager.

Yep. Posted pretty much the same thing at the same time.

If Roy is not gone, Johnson will be. Unless there is a huge turnaround into a winning streak by club and good form by Johnson to end of December

If you rebuke players like that in public then there can be no complaint when players come out with something about considering their future etc. etc.

It is better if all that shit is kept in-house and dirty laundry NOT washed in public. I can't think of ONE good reason it should be made a matter of public debate.

It seems a very strange thing to say about someone who has played 1 out of the last 7 games due to injury. His form prior to that wasn't great, but then no-one was playing particularly well.

As was mentioned, Roy could easily have said that Johnson will have to play very well to regain his place.

It does sound like there have been issues between the 2, with a suggestion of an attitude problem on Johnson's part. Compare that to Roy's statement about Poulsen being devestated about his poor form.

Mancini just criticised Adam Johnson and his attitude in the press

Managers do it all the time

I'm gonna credit Roy with some sense here, I infer that by coming out with this, & some of the language used, there's issues over Glen's attitude or lifestyle, not just his form.

What kinda world do we live in when employees/players have more power over their superiors/managers ?

Especially if they've been lazy and underachieving. You're paid to do a job so get on it and do it well else get the f out.

I don't disagree with one word but in the mythic codebook that is TLW I'm pretty sure there is a chapter about dealing with things in house. One of my problems with GH was that he ignored this rule.

I'm with Roy on this one, as Stu said this could be an ongoing issue and it's reached a stage that talking to Magic privately isn't working.

He's right, of course.

But who needed telling? Anyone? Keep that shit in house.

If you were trying to provoke a reaction and get him fired up, then this is exactly the thing to do.

I don't see the problem, its hardly a surprising statement,he knows its true as do we.

For a professional footballer to turn up in the shape he did this season would suggest that anyway.

Barrett has an article on this today too, he quotes £18m as the transfer fee, £2m in agents fees and £120k a week.

120k a week?
[/quote]

Yeah. There has never been any clarity on how much Johnson earns. It's been quoted at £80k a week and £139k a week, and every point in between.

Even if it's the lower end of the alleged wage it's still a fucking lot for a defensively shaky full back

The Guardian mentioned £120k too, and also suggested that NESV might be keen to offload him. If that's true, then the statement might make some kind of sense. I'm sure Commoli's confident he could find a better RB than Magic for a lot less than £18m.

But, while I don't think it's ALWAYS a bad idea to criticise players publicly - didn't Gerrard credit Houllier's comments after the Basle match with changing his whole attitude? - it's certainly not something you should be doing on a regular basis. Particularly when your attributes as a manager are being questioned by a number of players.
