FC Dallas star Brek Shea is carving out a nice place for himself with the United States under new boss Jurgen Klinsmann. The winger set up the only goal scored in three games under Klinsmann in the 1-1 draw with Mexico and followed that up with two promising starts in losing efforts against Costa Rica and Belgium.
Against Costa Rica Shea set up Landon Donovan for the USA's best chance of the night. Against Belgium, despite an obvious step up in the class of his opponents, the 21-year-old had several moments where he ghosted past established European defenders and got to the end line to deliver service, earning him the praise of his new boss.
"I think we have some very interesting youngsters coming through the ranks," Klinsmann said after the Belgium match. "Brek Shea is definitely one of them. He's full of energy, he's creative, and he’s fast and has a good physical presence. He's one of the kids we are going to build over the next cycle.
"He's eligible to play for the Olympic team, and so are others as well, like Juan Agudelo. You see their talent and what we try to do is build them one step at a time. It's good to see guys like Brek come over here and play against a strong side. We've told the young players it's now their time to challenge the established ones. That's the message they've got and they have three years to do that."
Shea's impact has been easy to spot. His pace on the left and ability to get down the line gives the USA something it hasn't had on that side of the pitch for quite some time. The goals haven't come yet, but Shea says he's enjoying his time with the USA, and getting more comfortable with each outing.
“I'm having a really good time playing with Klinsmann," he said. "Being around the guys is a lot of fun and I'm learning a lot. Hopefully I can continue to be called in. Each time I play I get more and more comfortable.”
Germans Schalke have previously had a £2.5million bid rejected for the powerful Dallas winger, 21.
