According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea have rejected a bid from Liverpool for left back Ryan Bertrand.
The 23-year-old featured on a regular basis for the Blues last season, making 38 appearances, including 19 in the Premier League.

The youngster has also played two games for the England senior team, as well as featuring in the Great Britain Olympics team, and having represented England at under-17, under-18, under-19, under-20 and under-21 levels.

Contract
Bertrand was hoping to take over from veteran left back Ashley Cole for Chelsea this season, but he’ll have to wait a little longer as Cole has signed a contract which will keep him at Stamford Bridge until at least next summer.

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers knows Bertrand well from his time as a coach in Chelsea’s youth ranks.

After this rejection though, Rodgers will have to take his search elsewhere.

Content
Bertrand is quite content at Chelsea, with three years remaining on his contract he’s happy to stay.
The newspaper quotes him as saying: “I want to be Chelsea’s No.1 left-back and when that time comes it will happen.

“All I can do is to be ready and keep playing; keep biding my time. I’m thinking of nothing else.
“To be honest, I am just focusing on being No 1. I just concentrate on progressing in the games I get.

“I’ve managed to do so in recent years and that’s the only target. You have to be able to compete.

“That’s the way you develop at the top level. That’s just the way it is, and it’s the place I want to be. So I’m used to that.”

Any ideas how much we have bid? Hes a good young prospect, I imagine Chelsea wont be letting him leave on the cheap

I quite like him, but I can imagine we're going to get him unless we go totally overboard with the bid - which I the us doing.

It should be clear early on whether there's any chance of doing the deal

If hes happy to bide his time and wait for opportunities (as quoted) there then there is zero chance of this happening as we wont be able to offer enough money to force Chelsea into selling a player they want to hang onto

A day ago, the rumours were saying that we're put off by his wage demands of pay rise to £60k/wk, from his current £35k/wk. They would be weary of the homegrown rule too, given the age of Cole, Lampard and Terry, and with Moses unlikely to feature in their long term plans, leaving them with Cahill and Bertrand as the ones above 21 to qualify for the HG status.

is that homegrown rule ever enforced ? has any club ever had problems with it at all ?

The Southampton youngster had a poorer passing accuracy than both Cole and Bertrand but the Chelsea duo were playing in a team which generally sees a lot more of the ball. Shaw is often under far more pressure and although people say that it is easier for youngsters at smaller clubs because of increased game time it can actually be harder because of the increased responsibility. Interestingly, Shaw won far more his tackles than either of the Chelsea boys, winning 43 out of 51 tackles. Cole won 47 out of 64 and Bertrand 14 out of 23.
