Salah: Basel 'laughed' at Liverpool transfer offer before Chelsea move

In January Chelsea made changes to their squad to suit the more industrious and functional style of play that Jose Mourinho craves - whilst letting the more precocious options leave.
The end result was the departures of Juan Mata and Kevin De Bruyne - and the arrivals of Nemanja Matic and Mohamed Salah.

In the case of the latter, Chelsea stole him from underneath the nose of a Premier League rival.
In the summer they snatched Willian from the grasp of Tottenham Hotspur - in January it wasLiverpool’s turn to feel the pickpocketing effects of The Blues.

For much of the winter it looked as if Liverpool were on the verge of snapping up the Egyptian - and reportedly even agreed a £13.5 million fee for the player.

But Chelsea than swooped in and signed him up - much to reaffirm the smugness of Jose Mourinho.
Brendan Rodgers was disappointed with the deal -stating:

"The club did everything they felt they possibly could to get a deal but it wasn't to be… It was deemed in this case that we couldn't do a deal and Chelsea could. So the boy has gone there. That's something that is out of my control. We can identify the players that we want to bring in and we hope we can get them in... If they end up going to another club that is difficult to take…”

And now Salah - who scored his first goal for the club last weekend in the 6-0 win against Arsenal has spoken about the move.

He told beIN Sports:
“Liverpool is a great and important team and I cannot say anything bad about it. But their football manager came out and said that it was an issue of money and that Chelsea bid more.”

“Negotiations opened with Liverpool in October and I waited until January and did not hear from them. I cannot declare how much they offered in October, perhaps the Basel management can provide such information, but they laughed when they received that offer.”

Chelsea then made their move in a deal believed to be worth £11 million - and the rest, as they say, is history.

Now I'm not sure if Salah ever was the right player for us, but seriously we need to stop fucking around when it comes to transfer dealings.
OK, we're probably on a tight budget and we don't want to waste any money *cough* Alberto, *cough* Aspas, but this is getting ridiculous.
Mkhitaryan, Willian, Salah, Konolyanka....how many failed transfer do we need to have before they start doing things differently.

Funny how that works huh?

But srsly he looked really bad today. He kept trying to be overly intricate, even into extra time. Maybe he would be better suited playing for Arsenal?

Not a player you put on when you opposition has parked the bus. I was surprised that they left Willian on the bench. Would have been more useful.

Now having seen him play....we are laughing at Chelsea for making a stupid offer to Basel. Did the reporter point that out to him?

Yep, they missed Willian. Mourinho clearly had the midweek game against PSG on his mind I think. That midfield they started with was ridiculous. And Torres was really poor, again. Ba did nothing after coming on, though I don't think he'd have been too pleased being shunted to the side. Hazard was overworked being the team's attacking spark. Hopefully Eto'o stays out for a longer period, because he's the only striker who looks like he's one.

I also thought Salah did okay for them after coming on - certainly their pace and movement improved, and I think he worked a few good openings for them. Started poorly and gave the ball away a few times, but started to come into the game more. Oscar was the one whom I thought was anonymous after coming on. Had 10 more minutes on the field than Salah but ended up making fewer passes for them.

Stat that sums it up for Chelsea: 7 out of 38 successful crosses.

I'm reminded of that Bob Monkhouse joke he did when everyone in his class had to say what job they wanted to do. When he said ' a comedian' everybody laughed at him. He eyes his audience and says, "well nobody's laughing now".

Classic.

Who's bothered? He'll become a splinter arse at Chelsea. We offered what we thought he was worth and it got turned down.

Exactamundo.

And I'd be a bit less quick than some above to believe this fella's version of events anyway. He apparently wasn't told how much we bid, but he *was* told they laughed at it?

"good evening Mo. We've called you in to inform you that we've received an offer from Liverpool. The terms are confidential and we can't tell you what they are. But ha ha ha. HAHAHA. MUAHA HAHAHA. That is all."

I love the fact we are cheapskates and lo ballers with these kind of signings, I want that rep. oh and he's a muppet thus far

This is so great coming as it does from a hyena.

I think they might have to get through the Third qualifying round of Champions League.

Qualified after beating M. Tel-Aviv 4-3 on aggregate this season.

Salah is only endearing himself to the plastic army. We would have been in negotiation for so long had Basel laughed at us.
