Barcelona v Liverpool Match Thread - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE SEMI-FINAL

Is this where the RAAAAAAAATIIIIINNNNGS go? Haven't done them for a while, with holidays and laziness etc. Anyway, that was shit.

Barcelona played better than I've seen for a while, with Suarez electric (and a cunt, obvs) and even fucking Busquets playing at the very top of his game. And then there's Messi, fucking hunchback whining dwarf cunt. You can't stop those. And us? Well, we didn't disgrace ourselves, despite that scoreline. Mane and Salah missed a sitter each and we were happy to go at them, and played some nice football.

But, but.....but; while we can query playing Gomez at RB (a position he's never been great at), and ponder the wisdom of playing Wijnaldum there - what was he? A fucking "false 9"? Is that what we call a player totally unsuited to the role dumped up front? - it still seemed a performance that lacked the requisite sang-froid. At times we seemed a bit eager to play the role of plucky have-a-go heroes and didn't play like we were confident enough in ourselves. There was a rushed freneticism to the game, with even Virgil looking spooked. And there was little doubt that once we conceded two, another was coming as we got sloppy and left too much space.

So it's probably not going to happen. A goal or two for us would have given us a real chance, but we fucked up and in the end they missed a couple of sitters of their own.

Allison (6) Not sure he could much about the goals and was solid enough. Distribution was fine, too.

Gomez (4) Picked because he's a better defender than TAA, but he isn't a better RB. Caught out a few too many times and his weird fucking head with eyes on either side of it seems to make him incapable of tracking diagonal balls. Little quality going forward either.

Virgil (5) This was pretty mediocre by his usually stellar standards. Looked a bit uncertain, and was given the runaround at times by the movement of Messi, Suarez and co.

Matip (7) Both CBs caught asleep for the first goal, but after that made some important interceptions and tackles and good positioning. Played well.

Robertson (7) Caused lots of problems down the left with his pal Mane and then showed his defensive qualities later on, as we looked like totally collapsing.

Keita (6) Decent enough start, but only lasted 20 minutes after getting rattled by Rakitic.

Fabinho (5) It's perhaps harsh given how hard he tried, but he was made to look like a fucking scarecrow at times by the passing and movement of Barcelona, and Messi especially. Threw himself into some tasty challenges, but there was an air if desperation about almost everything he did and gave away the foul for the third.

Milner (6) Involved as ever, and never overawed by Barcelona, but lacked a bit of quality with two great chances that were wasted. Enjoyed him twatting Messi immensely

Mane (6) His pace, skill and aggressive style of play meant he was a constant threat, especially in the first half, but he missed a terrible sitter and that proved costly. Much quieter in the second 45 minutes.

Salah (6) Like Mane, he was terrorising the fullback and rinsed him time and again, but then held onto it too long, or just wasted the final ball. Fucking infuriating. And then missed an open goal.

Wijnaldum (3) Firmino wasn't fit enough to start, but what the fuck is going on when Liverpool's options are so fucking thin that Wijnaldum is a viable replacement away to fucking Barcelona in a CL semi-final? To the surprise of nobody it didn't work at all and Wijnaldum was utterly invisible. Fittingly, his best contribution was stepping over the ball for Milner to shoot.

Subs:

Henderson (6) One or two fantastic passes, and plenty of energy and work, but was occasionally missing in the middle leaving poor old Fabinho to suffer alone.
Firmino (6) Nearly scored.

I had no issue with Suárez. I expected nothing less from a winner with the passion he has when he crosses the white line.

We were unlucky. We can come back but it’s highly unlikely.

He's a cunt, as I said earlier. I had no problem with him celebrating his goal ( I hate that not celebrating thing), but he didn't need the other antics, like running the length of the pitch to get our player booked. I hope he gets a rough ride from the fans on Tuesday.

Coutinho on the other hand looked as if the occasion was a bit too much for him. Of the two I think I'd prefer Philippe.

I honestly... I... ugh... nevermind.

Hal, the irony of you pulling posters up for having hope when you are posting on a site whose name (sixcrazyminutes) was derived from a dream like comeback on Europe's biggest stage.

Did I think we'd come back against Milan? Nope. Do I think we'll come back next week? Nope. Just scroll past the post of those hoping for a turnaround next week. You're Modo'ing up the place with the last few months.

*Is it whose or who's or what is the correct word here??

Whose. The easiest way to remember is "who's" is basically who is or who has, whereas "whose" means 'belonging to'.

Fuck, I hope that's right, I'm doubting myself now.

In that 20 minutes or so from the start of the second half when we were camped in Barcelona's half we didn't create enough chances, just that one for Milner.

Not creating enough when we were so completely on top is why we need a passer.

Keita would have helped, or someone in midfield with a decent shot, but yeah, someone who unlocks defences would have helped.

Ok we have discussed the issues of last night without getting to the reasons and no one is saying we played shit as really it appeared like we were the home side.

So what do you guys think will happen next week ? How will Klopp set us up etc.. do you think it will be all out attack and fuck the defence ?

Just smash the fuckers like Joshua pounding Klitschko’s face in the 11th round. All out fuck them up.

Well, we don't do easy, that much is certain.

If they can score 3 against us, we can score 3 against them.

Have some faith.

I think we could have won last night and City would have drawn on Monday.

But then some of you made a deal with the devil involving us losing to Barca and City losing on Monday.
I hope you're happy now.
Fuck me ...so much devil worshipping witchcraft going on here.

I think we played well…. We kept the presure and was brave on the ball. Not clinical enough in both ends of course, but for periods of the game we looked like a home team. I don't want to get my hopes to high for the Return, cause they are capable of scoring but we should be able to grab a goal, and if we can double that before an hour played there is a game there.

Leading up to the match I was a little bit apathetic (for a European semi final!) because of the excitement of the title chase. But as City has continued to roll through their challengers in the league, I realised yesterday this tie is a massive opportunity. I'm feeling pretty gutted right now. It's not over until it's over, but this feels a bit like second half of Kiev last year to me. Very hollow.

We only need 6 minutes to equalize their lead, and from there it'll be a walk in the park..
Haha made me laugh.

TBH I'm still in shock - I can't believe the scoreline even now (BTW those are some of the worst ratings you've ever posted Brendan, not sure you watched the game) we bossed them for large parts of the game and the huge table of Spaniards next to me (and the two Romanians on my table) were absolutely cacking themselves and went totally silent until their second.

Thoughts:

1) I thought Klopp's changes were problematic. I understood logic of Gomez, but watching the game made me realize how valuable TAA is. Yes, he's not as good defensively but his ability to create opportunities from everyone on the right flank forces teams to respect our team more. Him not being there was problematic. I wasn't happy with Gini instead of Bobby, though he wasn't that bad ... When I saw that, I thought two things ... it should be 4-3-1-2 or I wish it was Shaq in the Gini's spot. Gini 'thinks slowly' when attacking - it showed a few times.
2) I am not blaming the ref for our loss but he was atrocious ... Salah got tugged a few times on runs before the yellow on Alba - and nothing. Keita was hammered by Rakitic (I think, have not seen highlights at all) and not a yellow even though it was a dangerous lunge. Yellows there and the game is different imo. Also not booking Messi for taking about 3 hours to get back to the half way line after his second goal ... I know it's Messi and fouls (like the above) are to be ignored but come on.
3) We didn't play badly at all - I'd say for most of the first half, both of the teams were working hard and trying to create opportunities ... Barca finished theirs brilliantly, our final ball was terrible or we missed what should have been goals (Mane off a fucking incredible pass from Henderson).
4) That being said, Barca's goal should have made it 1-1. Mane was taken down in the box by Pique, and instead of being a cunt or 'a diver' as Salah is labeled, he got up. Terrible mistake ...
5) What can I say about the 2nd half ... from the kick off to their lucky goal, we dominated them. They struggled to touch the ball and were relying on Messi runs to do anything. Our press was excellent and we had a brilliant chance that Milner would have scored if he didn't shoot it right at the goal ... Can't miss these ... and unlike earlier in the season where we won 1-0 after missing tons of chances, a better team punished us clinically.
6) Messi's FK was incredible. Right in front of me. What can you do ... genius. Surprised that he neymar'ed a lot in this game - not like him to look for fouls.
7) Lastly, Salah's missed summed up the night ... we played well, we got our chances but we lacked the killer instinct.

On Barca:
8) They're a massive club and the fans were quite amazing, but booing our players when they were warming up, or as they were showed during the CL anthem, or when Keita was obviously injured gnawed at me ... For real? I couldn't believe it really.
9) Barca have set up their stadium to essentially neutralize the ability of away fans to generate any atmosphere. They're (as I was in the Barca fan group) stuck behind plastic barriers right up in the top. I think I heard one chant from our fans?
10) Have to say, the 'angry' spanish puta puta puta screams by so many of their fans do sound far more 'cool' than the 'cunt' 'twat' shouts from our fans! 🙂

Lastly
11) I hope our fans can generate the necessary atmosphere at Anfield to give our players a lift to think they can win. Is it likely? Nah, like the league it's unlikely but that's why they play the game and if any team can make miracles happen in Europe, it's us. I'd love nothing more than our team to make Barca remember this year's run like last year's.
12) I don't have any issue with Suarez celebrating his goal - I prefer it honestly. But he was acting a right cunt ... I always defended him - he was 'our' cunt but yesterday made me realize I was probably wrong. He has no real attachment to our club - I don't remember Torres doing this shit when Agger tried to kill him. Meh, I hope he gets no special cheers.
13) Oh well ... great time, Reds fans are as usual great and the results sucks ... I sincerely hope that the likelihood we don't win a trophy this year doesn't see us lose a Mane or Salah. We're close but when you come up against hte two best teams in the world, you have to be on it all the time .. and we've not done that.

6) Messi's FK was incredible. Right in front of me. What can you do ... genius. Surprised that he neymar'ed a lot in this game - not like him to look for fouls.

I thought the same... particularly his rolling around after Milner pushed him out of touch.

Speaks to his desperation to win the CL after watching Real (Ronaldo) dominate for the three years.
