Arsenal Post match thread

- Can't believe Arsenal didn't load up on the right wing to go at Gomez. Coutinho worked back in support of him for about the first 15 mins then gave up, after that Arsenal should have been driving Bellerin forward in support of Sanchez to go two-on-one on Gomez. Yet they just kept moving inwards into space. Really average play.

- I thought we really missed Henderson. Just his energy and drive in that Can position would have given us so much more.

- Massive credit to Rodgers. Ballsy formation, another clean sheet, and if we'd taken our chances we'd be 3 from 3. He's also brought in absolutely marvellous footballer. Clyne, Gomez, Milner, and you can see there's something in Firminio. Good on Brodge; on the evidence of the first 3 games he's holding up his end of the bargain.

I think Callum Chambers being an accident waiting to happen in the first half probably scared Wenger into not having Bellerin push on. Even Bellerin himself was not exempt from some screwy passes at the back. On the other hand, it was a beauty seeing how hard Coutinho, Benteke and Milner worked on pressuring them into those poor passes and intercepting them.

Agreed on the Henderson point. I think Can was decent, but he's definitely less switched-on and can come across as a bit lethargic at times. I was thinking in the first half that Henderson being in there would've amplified our dominance and with his better delivery, maybe we'd have had more chances.

No argument about the last part. We got a bit of luck in these last 2 results with the offside calls, but players, staff and tactics seem to be coming along well 3 games into the season.

Oh, and we're not hearing anyone talk about the soft pre-season schedule leaving us undercooked anymore.

Quotes:

Praise too to Rodgers for taking the chance on Gomez, not just in making the purchase but giving him the opportunity. The Northern Irishman may have many faults, but trusting youth is not one of them. Nine of the 14 players Liverpool used against Arsenal are aged 24 and under, compared with six out of 13 for Arsenal.

Liverpool's average age on the pitch at the full time whistle was 21.8 years old.

Did Gerrard knock up the tea lady at Melwood, Ms Rossiter and she reared the child, Jordan in the bootroom?

I thought he did well, kept it simple and put pressure on the Arsenal midfield.

Rodgers does fancy a bit of trial by fire for the kids, doesn't he? I can't decide if he's ballsy, reckless, or just old school in this regard. Teixeira against Fulham when we needed a goal in 13/14. Smith thrown in against Chelsea. Rossiter with 15 minutes to go against the Gunners. Smith aside, the other two have done well when thrown into pressure situations, so, good for them!

I guess making your premier league debut isn't , in general terms quite as gargantuan as it used to be , what with the money and lifestyle some of these younger players are already affording considering how little theyve achieved , I guess by throwing them in to what willl be one of the clubs biggest matches of the season amps it up a wee bit.

Mignolet 7 - good game but there were no world class saves needing to be made there so some praise I've seen is a bit OTT.
Gomez 7.5 - same with Joe. Everyone knows I've bigged him up from pre-season and wanted him to start as LB from Day 1, however even though he played well yesterday it should be noted that the vast majority of Arsenal pressure came from our right yet I'm not seeing the same level of support for Clyne (see the Arsenal heat map, Joe's side is green whilst Clyne's bright red) !
Lovren 7.5 - leading the line pushing the defence out and was solid though out, superbly covered Skrtel once or twice.
Skrtel 8.5 (MoM) - some magnificent defending and that out-stretched leg that flew past our post saved a certain tap-in for Walcott.
Clyne 8.5 - when you look at the pressure he was under, with one of the world's best forwards in Sanchez, plus Ozil and with Monreal on the overlap, and the lack of help he received from Firmino and especially Ibe, you wonder how he ever got forward. Maybe could even be MoM.
Lucas 7.5 - Hansern and I advocated him sitting behind Milner and Can in the pre-match thread. He did exactly what I expected and did it superbly.
Milner 7.5 - quality, energy, support. What more do you want ?
Can 7 - I thought he did well for most of the match, especially going forward but he also got his foot in on some vital interceptions as the pressure began to build.
Firmino 6.5 - Stat : he made more chances for LFC in the 1st half than the whole of the AFC team combined. Went under the radar a little and tired badly but he is going to be fantastic.
Coutinho 8 - what more is there to say ? Unlucky not to score.
Benteke 8 - battered them from start to finish

Ibe 4, Rossiter 6.5, Moreno 6 (should have done better on the break).

Don't forget Sterling, Gomez and Ibe 😉

I imagine the pay off is pretty significant either way.

Teixeira and Rossiter didn't bottle it and will probably get a chance in the squad. Kenny did it with Flanagan and it worked, despite the current injuries.

The ones who don't step up, like Smith may never be heard from again.

He's ace. My Utd supporting mates have gone from he's a decent signing that would be a back up for Utd to he's a fantastic signing in 3 games.
The weird cunts.

Proper boss!

If he scores 1 in 2 he will be. I think it's far too early to be writing off anything for him.

Firmino should have got the hook at half time, he had a very good 45 minutes but it was obvious that the pace of the English game and his lack of match fitness meant he was a passenger in the 20 minutes after half time (until he got subbed). His lack of match fitness and Lucas' IMO gave Arsenal the upper hand in the 2nd half.

Ibe was poor and will be poor again but remains an exciting prospect who will probably have a stellar career (hopefully with us).

Skrtel was awesome and his partnership with Lovren is showing great potential. The CB partnership is benefitting hugely from the performances of Gomez and Clyne as it means they can focus on their own jobs. For too long our CB's have got too much stick for poor performances when they spent half their time covering for dodgy full backs.

Milner and Gomez are definitely the best 2 signings in the EPL this summer.

Clyne is a better signing than Milner, just among ours.

It's nice that people are able to disagree over the best signings of the summer when it comes to LFC! Certainly makes a change to the last few summers ..

- Milner and Gomez are great pick ups.

- Clyne is a terrific full back. He had little cover from Firmino and dealt with Sanchez well enough.

- Benteke won almost every forward ball yesterday and his ball retention was generally very good. He gives us a lot of options (an aerial threat, a throw in target, CBs can go direct into him, he runs into channels, knock downs for our AMs, and decent pace to run in behind). The only thing he hasn't shown is ruthlessness in front of goal. But I've been very impressed with his all round play.

- Firmino looks like he's still getting used to the pace and aggression of this league but i've seen enough in some of his tussles to see that's not afraid of engaging in physicality. He'll get stronger as the season goes on. Doesn't look like a powder puff play ala Markovic.
