Arsenal FA Cup post match

Doc, I agree with you about the importance of the FA Cup being devalued, but.... to win away against a top team, secure a home QF tie against local rivals, with a realistic chance of making the final and qualifying for the CL would have been a great result.

Beating Arsenal might have further damaged their confidence with their season in meltdown.

It could have bred the confidence and self belief that we will need - that winning mentality.

Many positive yes, but still a few too many negatives.

We've been beaten. We all know it would have been great to have won but that's life. All we can do is search for positives. Luckily, we don't need to look very far. That was an excellent performance for the most part where we completely bossed a team who made us look like a mid-table side last time we played at their patch.

It is a shame we will not face Toffees in a quarter now. Those are the games we want to be in!! Well, let Swansea have it when we get back on track!!!

Fourth means we'll have to play qualifying games close together. Could we possibly cope with the exhaustion?

You're absolutely right. Let's get third then!
Arsenal will be busy on 3 fronts as will City, and Chelsea on 2. Here's hoping they'll drop points in spite of their big expensive squads.

Its a game where we outplayed the home team with everyone lining up to give us due respect bar Webb. Halsey and Poll make a great point without us having to say anything.

Gooners are flattered by victory!

I was pretty gutted but at the end of the day, we wasted far too many chances.

I think Agger was too easily brushed off ball for second goal, and no idea who was meant to be covering Pod before Flanno moved over to close him down.
First goal was an unlucky deflection that came from no one claiming that ball Sonobo chested down.

Love watching us attack these days.

Thoughts on line up:
Hendo shouldn't have been rested - he runs tirelessly in every game because he can. Because he is an endurance machine!
Jones must have been told he will play in cup but I was disappointed we didn't use it as an opportunity for Mignolet to get some playing minutes with his new CB pairing for the period up until Sakho is back in the running again.

It was an excellent move by Arsenal IMO.

If you look at the 2:52 mark of this clip, Flano was the one who was tracking Podolski from the beginning of the move at the centre line. Once the ball was slid over to Ox, Skrtel moved over to help. It was a bad situation for both centrebacks, as Agger had been dragged out and into a foot race he couldn't win, and Skrtel had to decide whether to go strong to close down Ox, or stay home to defend the cut back.

Flano had to to cover the space that Podolski eventually ran into. I think Flano's inexperience told there as he reacted later than Podolski in anticipating where the pass was going to land. Also in the clip, you'll notice Allen doing a great job sprinting back from the centre circle into the box to help, covering Sanogo in the process.

Yeah I mean when you play the way we play you may lose occasionally, when you deserve to win, but all the top teams lose when they don't take their chances. The fact we created so many is a massive departure to the days of ROFFA. in our quest for perfection, and our fear that Rodgers may not be the real deal, we're quick to be concerned about losing. Truth is, it happens. Once it's not a systemic problem with the team, we're grand.

Sunday Times, prior to the game:

Wilshere reflects: “Liverpool were the best team I’ve played against this season.” When discussing the opponents he most admires, foremost are Liverpool players. “Jordan Henderson was tough this year. He’s got a great attitude to football. He’s not nice to play against. You walk off and you’re knackered.

That interview made it even more surprising to me that Hendo was rested. He was missed in the middle IMO.

He's a little gobsh!te, but that sort of thing's good to hear.

Yes. Here's another bit:

“Coutinho was good. Suarez can be unreal. His brain seems to work quicker than that of other players. He’s on the ball and you think, ‘What are you doing?’ and all of a sudden he’s gone.” Then there’s Steven Gerrard. “If you asked Gerrard his favourite position now he’d say sitting deeper. His passing range is still amazing, the best in the Premier League. Scholes was the only one, for me, who was up there with him and Gerrard proved himself against us, coming deep and just pinging balls around.”

Nice words from Wilshere, always liked him as a player, a rare genuine English talent, pity for him about the injuries but hes still only young.

I think EVERYONE would have liked to have progressed, but a FA cup win, like it or not, is less important to the prestige of our club than being in the Champs league. I also think most of us are happy that we went out as the superior team in one of the toughest grounds in English football to get a result, against a top team. It is shite, but at least we weren't taken to the cleaners (except by Howard Webb). We don't have an inferiority complex against anyone. It bodes well for the games to come.

But we had CL football then (in fact we've just won big ears) and the future looked rosy.
It's different now as we're fighting for a CL place.

You know what else was awesome that season? Finishing third ahead of THE ARSENAL and feeling like we were a team on the up again. Hahahaha
Maybe the I've been spoilt by seeing us lift the FA Cup twice now, but it hurts very much to have no conscious memory of us winning the league. And that gnawing feeling that we haven't been in Europe too too long. It makes you feel like we aren't one of the big boys any more. It is really fucking shit knowing that we aren't one of the club anymore. Or that Spurs or Everton are above you.

So I'm not being hypocritical. I do enjoy the FA Cup but hand on heart, I would give it up if it meant we were in Europe again.

I'm glad I asked the question because all those are good, thoughtful answers. Thanks.

Now that we are out of all the cup competitions - we have no excuse to NOT win the league. One game to look forward too each week (if we are lucky) - knowing we can beat anyone. How can we not win the league ?

For fucks sake.

What is wrong with what I have said ? - they are now free to focus on the league and winning the title. I don't think you can ask much more of a team that have f*ck all to do except play one game every week against teams that we know they can beat. They have to make every game their game and win it. I want City, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Man U to stay in the other competitions for as long as possible (not to win them of course) - so that they get tired. This is it everyone - the strongest attack we have had for a long time with the best player/striker force in the whole world. There is no reason to lose a game anymore for the rest of the season.

I will leave the rest of the forum to have their wicked way with you on that post as well. But, you cretin, there's just one little factor you've forgotten. Even wif we do win every game left this season, the league is not in our own hands because we have to see other teams drop points as well.

So we have to win every game, and expect Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City to drop points. Yeah, as you say above, it's a shoe in. I refer you back to my original response - for fucks sake.

Exactly what I thought at the start of the season too. All we have to do is win all 38 games and we're champions. Couldn't be any simpler.

If we win every game we'll win the title though cos we gotta play City and Chelsea
