Allen Out for Season

Without reading the thread, I'm just gonna say that Andy Cole was shit.

He was a bit like Dirk Kuyt in so much that he turned out to be nothing like the player we thought we were getting. However, Kuyt had the sense to re-invent himself and his position and showed his value whereas Cole was always just a nob who squandered more chances than he scored.

If he hadn't had Yorke, he'd have been a disaster.

Complete shite.

I meant that United didn't get the Newcastle Cole that I bet they were bargaining for.
He was nowhere near as prolific.

Ryan obviously doesn't!

Cole and Yorke formed a partnership beyond the sum of its parts. Cole was a decent striker but never delivered what he promised at Newcastle.

He was not of the level of many top strikers like we had with Fowler and Owen and I remember always being glad they hadn't got Shearer or someone like Batistuta or Ronaldo.

They had the best midfield in the world of Giggs, Scholes, Keane and Beckham. Cole and Yorke helped form a strong team, and maybe they wouldn't have been all as good with a Ronaldo in there instead of Cole. Actually scratch that - they'd have been loads better.

Anyways, that's enough for me talking about that lot.

Second in the Premier League's all time goalscorer's chart to Shearer.
The third most assists from open play in the history of the Premier League, behind only Bergkamp and Giggs.
A better goals-per-game ratio than Shearer if you take out penalties.

I'm not saying he was better than Shearer, but to suggest he was some half-arsed nomark is ridiculously undervaluing him. He was a top striker.

Jesus - first Rooney and now Cole. I know we hate the Scum, but let's be objective, not everyone who has played for Man U is crap, otherwise they wouldn't be on course for 20 league titles.

Andy Cole while not being a world beater was superb for Utd, he wasn't as prolific as he was at Newcastle but his overall game was superb for them and along with Yorke ripped through the Prem and Europe in 99.

Liverpool have confirmed Joe Allen will undergo surgery on his left shoulder on Thursday and will miss the remainder of the 2012-13 season.
The midfielder will be ready to return in time for the start of next campaign.
Liverpool first-team doctor Zaf Iqbal said: "Joe Allen is due to have a left shoulder operation tomorrow morning in Liverpool and will be ready to return to football at the beginning of next season."

What I remember about Cole is that he used to miss about 5 chances a match and score one, so he was known as a bad finisher, which I suppose he was. But it doesn't really take into account the fact that he managed to set into 5 or 6 goal scoring positions consistently. He scored lots and lots of goals, and would inevitably have bad runs where he didn't score, he is still probably in the top ten strikers of the past twenty years.

My memory could be hazy, it was a while ago, but I think I have it right.

My abiding memory of Joe this season has been Joe lagging behind the man that has the ball pulling his shoulder and looking like a Chihuahua chasing a Gazelle.

Still think he's going to be a good player though.

He's clearly been targeted for physical intimidation - I've lost count how many times he's been elbowed, smacked or slapped on the side of the face - so it can't have helped that he's also been carrying an injury. He needs to strengthen for next season, but at his best he'll speed up the team's movement appreciably - because he thinks so quickly, and sees a pass so quickly, without moving much he'll add pace where it counts.

Hopefully the 3 months will do him the world of good. Get his fitness and mental health back in order and then show his true talent next season. I wont be surprised if he, as Hendo/Downing, needs a year to get going.

In an update for Liverpoolfc.com, Rodgers revealed just how much pain Allen has been playing through in recent months before undergoing surgery last week.

While the Welshman won't kick a ball again this season, the boss hopes to have Kelly back in training at the start of May.

He said: "Joe has had his operation and it went well.

"It's interesting because when it was looked at, the surgeon said that if you touched it with your thumb you would have broken the shoulder.

"So that just shows you how flimsy it was and also how much pain he was in for a period of time. But thankfully that went well and he has started his rehabilitation.

"It will unfortunately keep him out for the rest of the season.

Odd thing to say. So, Allen managed to avoid physical contact on the field all that time? I don't think that's what is meant, but that's what it sounds like.

Which makes the question "why the fuck was Joe Allen playing against Southampton?" all the more baffling.
