Allen Out for Season

Does that mean that wales are that bad that they would even field injured players over the reserves? Or that the injury isn't that bad at all.

Maybe he's playing before his op?

EDIT, forget that, I just read he's already had it done! lol

Go have a nice holiday Joe and we'll see you bright and early next season, injuries are never a great thing but it's probably for the best to get him a decent break. Hopefully we'll see the real Allen again next season.

I wouldn't be rushing Kelly back either.

Yeah, they could be like two brand new signings next season, and then there's Borini if he stays.

Definitely a good player in there, we were discussing this watching the game the other day, despite our longing to play within short triangles, our play is still very stretched and I don't think he's benefiting from it, he needs to be in the thick of the play with players moving around him, as we've seen fleetingly when he's in the final third, he's clever at keeping the play going between a couple of attacking players, playing the one-two with short passes in congested space. Give him too much room and ask him to play 20-30 yard balls regularly and he's caught short, that said, he does need to work on it seriously, he gave the ball away with one of his first touches on Sunday when there was literally no one there to fight for the ball, just a rudimentary 8 yard pass sideways and he played it blindly to the opposition.

Yea he needs movement and he needs to recover his confidence, he has been fking up passes he would never have done a year ago. The players around him need to trust him too because he thrives in tight spaces and they are overlooking him at times because they aren't sure he won't lose possession.

It'll all come together at some stage he's definitely not a bad player.

He's a very very good footballer. Some players take time to show their ability at a new club: Cole, Sheringham, Pallister, Henderson, Bale, Hart, Hamann, etc. Doesn't mean they're bad footballers if they struggle for a few months, just means they need time and patience.

He's quality, in time he'll show it. I've no doubt.
Cole?

Did he?
Dont remember that at all. Im sure youre right of course, just dont recall him ever having a barren spell.

Yep, he went several games without scoring from memory and was becoming quite the laughing stock. I remember him scoring at Old Trafford finally against someone and everyone mauling him.

Is correct Lineker made a big deal out of saying Fergie finally getting a Cole Goal

Carroll took a long time to show his potential at his new club, and Allen will eventually do the same.

Serious? He took absolutely ages to get going there, like more than just a few games. He didn't establish himself as a starter for at least a year, probably longer.

He signed in the January and played in 18 games scoring 12 goals. Then played 30 odd games the season after but was hit and miss, 1 in 3 I think, which still isn't bad.

Crouch was another. Strikers get flak if they don't score goals, even if they actually do well in other ways. (An exception was Ray Kennedy, who started well in terms of goals but got flak for the rest of his game.) I doubt it's that helpful to use them in comparisons with players in other positions who start slowly.

So he didnt have a barren run then?

I don't know mate, maybe he did, but he must have banged them in over a short spell otherwise, either way, it's a good return, his return the season after was about 11 in 30, where he did draw criticism. I think at the end of the first (half) season after he signed in Jan, he missed a few chances in crucial games, as he often did. He was that kind of player, he scored buckets full but he spurned loads too.

Cole definitely had a tough start at Utd. The stats don't back that up really, but the general impression was that he struggled to begin with.

It's not a bad return on paper over the season and a half though, but there's gaps throughout his career of 5,6,7 games where he doesn't score. It's hardly an initial struggle though, scoring two in your first four and then smashing 5 in during one game.

FWIW, I see Sturridge as a very similar sort of player.

Is it really necessary to fact check what Ryan said. The point is that we need to be patient.

Haha.. really Modo? Coming from Mr Archive himself.

FWIW I wasn't fact checking at all, quite the contrary, I was interested to see what his stats were, because I always think of him as a striker who statistically was prolific, but in reality it took him alot of chances and a run in the team to get goals. I think the stats pretty much back up most of that including what Ryan said, he did have barren runs and he scored in fits and starts, but I think most fans would be happy with their striker having that sort of initial impact over the first several games. Over the course of the season was a different story though.

Like I replied to Oncy initially - I didn't know how the goals were spread, the lol was because of the 5 goals (of the 12) coming in one game. His record in that sense was misleading, as it was for alot of his career really.

Anyway, it's a bit rich you waving the "patience" banner around.

But it's not about the stats. Unless I was on acid constantly from 95 to 97 Cole struggled to really make himself at home there for a while. I'm sure there was talk of him being moved on at some point, even.

Possibly mate, I don't really remember, I remember the signing of Sherringham giving them a completely different dimension though, which in turn helped AND took pressure off Yorke/Cole. Then there was Ole aswell.

I think it was just Liverpool fans that went on about Cole being shit.

I criticised him for needing too many chances through his whole spell there.

Poor Joe Allen, after a turbulent 9 months into his Liverpool career he finally gets a sympathy or concern thread only for it to taken over by Andy Cole. Poor poor Joe.
I can' t do those winky smilies on my device so I'll just have to say. "Winky Smiley"
That sounds all wrong.

Andrew Cole was on talk sport this very morning, he was saying when he arrived Kidd said to him something along the lines of 'you can score 40 goals a season at United and it won't be enough'. Meaning he need to do more for the team, which he says he did improve on.

But aye, Joe Allen.

Without reading the thread, I'm just gonna say that Andy Cole was shit.

He was a bit like Dirk Kuyt in so much that he turned out to be nothing like the player we thought we were getting. However, Kuyt had the sense to re-invent himself and his position and showed his value whereas Cole was always just a nob who squandered more chances than he scored.

If he hadn't had Yorke, he'd have been a disaster.

Kuyt came as a striker and was converted to a defensive winger. You can't blame him for not being what we wanted
