Liverpool FC Player Joe Allen
JOE ALLEN will be out of action for three months once the Liverpool FC midfielder has undergone surgery on a shoulder injury.
The Reds are considering when to book the Wales international in for the operation after learning the extent of the rehabilitation period.
Allen has been hampered by the problem since October and it has gradually got worse to the point where his movement is being restricted and going under the knife is the only option.
The 23-year-old came off the bench and played through the pain barrier in Sunday’s 3-2 win over Tottenham at Anfield.
Allen is happy to persevere in order to play his part in Liverpool’s pursuit of a European place over the coming months but boss Brendan Rodgers has ruled out the prospect of postponing surgery until the end of the season.
The Reds’ priority is to ensure the £15million man is fully fit for the start of pre-season training in July so he will need to have the operation by early April.
Allen, who celebrates his 23rd birthday on Thursday, has had a history of problems with his shoulder since dislocating it playing rugby at school when he was 15.
In May 2010, during his time at Swansea, he was forced to undergo minor surgery, which only kept him out for a month.
But following a further three years of wear and tear, the ball and socket of his shoulder have come apart and the recovery time for the extensive work he needs doing to the joint is between 10 and 12 weeks.
Pepe Reina is continuing to have treatment on the calf injury which ruled him out against Spurs with the Reds hopeful he will return to the side for Saturday’s trip to Southampton.
Meanwhile, Liverpool won’t rush defender Martin Kelly back into action as he continues his rehabilitation following the cruciate ligament injury he suffered against Manchester United back in September.
The Academy graduate is back running at Melwood but has yet to resume full training and remains under the guidance of the club’s medical staff.
It’s possible Kelly could make a competitive return in the closing weeks of this season but Liverpool intend to tread carefully with the young England international.
They want to ensure he’s back firing on all cylinders for pre-season in July and won’t jeopardise that by fast-tracking his return.

He's a very very good footballer. Some players take time to show their ability at a new club: Cole, Sheringham, Pallister, Henderson, Bale, Hart, Hamann, etc. Doesn't mean they're bad footballers if they struggle for a few months, just means they need time and patience.

He's quality, in time he'll show it. I've no doubt.

No great loss? Thats harsh
Looked much better in the last 3 games, and I for one would rather have a healthy squad to chose from in the last 9 games.

Great footballer that will hopefully show us what he can do next season.

By "no great loss" I think he meant it in a "it would be worse if it were Suarez" type of way.

He has been generally poor since January.. I have no doubt he has the ability to be a great footballer a good pre-season behind him to toughen up and recover from his Injury should sort him out.

Henderson deserves to be picked ahead of him at the moment, hence why I say no great loss.

I still think he's a great talent. Hopefully he'll now get a rest, a good pre-season and then return ready to show what he can really do.

ive been wanting to see henderson given some starts recently so im not too concerned

Yep, let him rest, I have no problem with us taking time with Allen, I think people forget just how young he is.

This seems to be a good call all round. Allen gets the right medical treatment with no pressure to rush him back. whilst Henderson gets a clear run of games to solidify his improved form.

NB. 23 isn't *that young

Sent from a mobile device - apologies for any crap

Like the look of that myself. Well, apart from Lucas and Henderson but you can't have everything.

This explains his dip in form. Hopefully we'll see the real Joe Allen next season.

But he looked better in the last 3 games and losing him for the rest of the season does makes the squad weaker, no question about it. It's possible we might not have won the game vs Tottenham if Allen wasn't available. It's a tricky decision with scheduling the surgery.

I say we keep him available for the next few games. He's been edging towards a bit of form of late, and the more he can play the more we can preserve the freshness of the squad in the run in.

I think he may very well be sold on in the summer.. Doesn't seem (quite rightly) to be getting a look in at the mo..
No chance of him being sold in the slightest. Rodgers is a big fan of his and will definitely persist with him.
