Agger appreciation thread

I love how many of our foreign players 'umm' and 'err' less than Gerrard now.

Nice interview from Agger.

Some facts for ya:

Last six games without Agger: W1 D3 L2
Last six games with Agger : W6 D0 L0 - all clean sheets.

What does it say about Agger?

Not much, IMO. Too many external factors.

Can't argue with you. But he's quality.

More than a bit of scouse. I love that, it really does reflect who bothers to try and integrate with local life more.

Without a doubt. I wonder what his problems are though, with all those injuries. Does he have the same sort of problems Gerrard did when he first started out - some bone structure / growth problem which I think Houllier alluded to? We need to drag him off and inject him with adamantium.

The answer lies in Lucas blood.

Is he a top quality world class defender? - no. There are things lacking from his game - primarily pace & consistency. The latter is partly to do with his injury record. (and let me add that kelly is heading down the agger route).

Does he have the potential to be a Top defender? Yes, but in order for him to show it be needs to play consistently & constantly. Potential or ability are no good if it's paper based.

Agger hasn't done it enough on the pitch. He needs to to justify the hype. After all, he was our second choice after vidic. I know who I'd have rather signed.

As been said stats like these are always rather flawed (to many external factors) but that's still some quite surprising figures. And to be honest I don't believe it's all coincidence.

Yesterday his presence in the back four line certainly gave a lot of confidence to his mates around him. Skrtel played a very good game and looked very assured also. Agger's confidence and composure on the ball means more time for anyone else in the backline to get a breather now and then and find their right positions. I know it's only one game but Agger and Skrtel almost looked like a pairing for the future.

Vidic wanted to go to Utd, so was it even an option?
For me Agger, when fit is the best defender at the club now but he's not fit often enough to be judged. I would love for us to just break the bank and sign Cahill, think he's an outstanding defender and would compliment our defence well.
However, but when he plays the defence does have air of calmness and against Chelsea when we were knocking them out of champion leagues in 2007, he did a fine job Drogba in the second leg after being run ragged in the 1st leg. I like the fact, I like the fact he learn withing a week how to handle him.
Btw, did he play against Drogba in 2008 and 2009?

We definitely lack a dominating centre back at times, but I thought they did well together.

Skrtel used to play well alongside Hyypa, as I've said before, we need a pairing that compliments each other and arguably Agger and Skrtel do, as do Carra and Agger. The problem with Carra/Skrtel is that neither are really comfortable enough bringing the ball out (though I think both are also unfairly lambasted for it at times too) and both are too similar in terms of style. Hopefully Agger can stay fit for the rest of the season and we can stick with that back four, because it's more or less all we've got available.

On a slightly different note: I bet you all we could soon see stats very similiar to these when it comes to Suarez playing or not.

He plays, we win.

He doesn't play, we resemble a headless chicken in attack.

I'm a big Agger fan. I do want to see Kelly play CB for us when Carragher retires.

Oh and I'm firmly on the Gary Cahill bandwagon. Great player and I think we should sign him.

Same as us minus Gerrard and Torres imo.

Yep most definitely. I thought Agger played really well yesterday.

Got injured in training today when he got clattered into by Niclas Pedersen.

Didn't continue training after that, but no word yet about the injury. Hopefully he's alright.

He'll obviously play and aggravate this knock. It's the Agger way.

I agree with this, there are too many externalities to draw any definite conclusion about Agger from the stats. But he has been playing particularly well lately.

How long has he been here now? 5 years? And besides one run (2007 maybe? When he scored against in Chelsea in Europe) he still seems to be trying to settle into the team on a regular basis.

We all know what the problem is. Agger is great, but always injured.
So we buy a quality CB who can walk into the first team in the summer, and whenever Agger is fit we have a selection headache and when he is not we dont.
Easy.

No problem at all mate. I'm Norwegian, and therefor can't stand Bendtner at all..
The Danish team is currently training here in Norway as we play each other on saturday, in what could be the most important international game for a decade or two.
If we win we're nearly in the EC and Denmark is always a tough and competitive game.

They call us mountain monkeys, and think we play like Wimbeldon while they're Barcelona...
