Agger and Barca (sorry KHL)

I'd rather have two new CB's than Skrtel playing. Good players tend to play better than shit ones even if they are new.

And remember the summer of 1999? Hyypiä and Henchoz didn't have that much trouble adapting I recall.

I meant regards to Agger, but agree I think Skrtel looks like he would better of going elsewhere.
The only thing I would say with when we bought Hyppia and Henchoz is that Houllier did bought them who was very defensive minded and it concerns me whether Rogers can do the same who seems to prefer a very offensive style (which is great !) but then we did get overrun on few games against average opposition last season. He also brought in Hamman in the same season I think ( or was it the season after ?) who did a great job helping out the defence in which in the first season was very defensive minded from what I remember which meant Houlier had prepared to concentrate on defence with his new signings.

Yeah I'd like to keep Agger too. Just that if Barca offer silly money for him we probably have to sell and I don't see any point in keeping Skrtel even then.

Hyypiä and Henchoz was just an example that it can be done. It would be a miracle if we could find such a pairing this time on first try. And as you say Hamann was a big part of why we were so good defensively and I've been saying for ages(not that much here, I'm a lazy poster) that our midfield has been making our defense look worse than it actually is these couple of seasons. I would really like to see a dynamic CM being brought in this window.

If you hadn't have bent over for JJ in the penultimate game of the season then pillaged me in the final game - I might have been more inclined to be sympathetic to your cause Kristian.

As it is, being Northern Irish, I bear grudges. You're on my list - and vengeance is a dish I like to serve deep fried... in batter.

So for that.... Agger must go.

I will miss you next Season mate, I am not sure how to cope without the certain six points from our matches.

Linked again, by the same media.

- 3rd highest paid player after Gerrard and Suarez
- Style would fit Barca's philosophy
- More realistic target than Thiago Silva who cost PSG €42m
- Available for €19m
- Last linked with Man City last Dec, who has since not followed up their interest with any moves
- 56 caps for Denmark
- 209 matches and scored 12 goals for Liverpool since joining in 2005
- Barca will move for him if negotiations with PSG for Thiago Silva fails

19M Euros!

That's about 16M pounds!

Sell!
Really??
After agents fee, would leave us about £14 million, is it worth the hassle of bedding in another new defender when we already have a new one who has to also get used to our defence.
I like Agger, had a few dodgy moments last year but I do like his loyalty and in the current climate where we don't look like we can compete with a CL club for tranfers realistically so I would rather hold onto what we have unless the money is too good which in this case isn't.

Its 14M for Daniel Agger, who will be 30 next year. We should be able to find someone who is younger and can give us Agger's production at a much lower wage.

I like Agger; but I can understand too if we sold him, esp at that price.

I do find it rather amusing how often I have to read on here, whether it's Suarez, Agger, Johnson, Reina etc., how rather easy it would be to replace them.

"We should be able to find someone who is younger and can give us Agger's production at a much lower wage".

I doubt it and if this was the case surely Barca or PSG or Monaco would be looking to do just this right? Or do we know something they don't?

9 out of 10 times when you are selling/losing your most important players you will struggle to fill the gap immediately whether it's Alonso, Masher, Torres, Sami, Carra etc.

That's not saying we shouldn't do it at times of course, I just don't think we are in a position where we would gain from selling an important figure both on and off the pitch like Agger, especially not with Carra quitting, Suarez most likely leaving and Reina uncertain too.

We haven't bought a legit central defender in years now, it's about time we break that trend.

Agger is more suited to play on the continent anyways, and it looks like he is being drastically overvalued by a lot of clubs. Agger's production was mediocre at best last season, I can't imagine it being that difficult to replace.

That's a bit harsh.

Both Skrtel and Agger have been good buys for the money. Neither are world class but overall we've gotten some good service out of them even if at varying times one or the other has been a bit iffy.

We'd do well to replace on of them with comparable quality for 6-7M that's for sure.

Certainly not saying they were bad investments or anything like that, but if we did sell Agger, there are plenty of affordable options out there who could slot in and provide comparable production at lower wages, with some transfer cash leftover.
