Phew, it's hard to put any kind of coherent thoughts together after an emotional game like this, but I'll try.
Both teams essentially self-destructed defensively, conceding 2 soft and unnecessary goals each. So one could say the brilliant passing move between Coutinho, Enrique and Suarez for the first goal was ultimately the difference in this game.
It feels great to win, but let's not forget that after being completely in control for most the of the first half, our defense and bad luck combined again to almost give the game away. We've seen this way too often this season. I don't know if it's an Alonso or a Hyypia we are missing, but we are definitely missing some kind of key element on the defensive side. Somehow our defensive game just doesn't gel the way our attacking game now does. We don't look confident when the opposition has the ball; we are spending a lot of energy chasing after the ball which only leads to containing the opposition, at best, and eventually leads to mistakes. Good defensive teams can contain the opposition with minimum of fuss and when they actually turn on the screw and start pressing, it leads to winning back possession, not just mere containment. Whatever it is, whether it's down to personnel or tactics, there needs to be a lot of progress made before this team can say it's a good defensive team. I think this is the main thing holding this team in mid table.
Fortunately for us, Spurs had self-destructed even more spectacularly today. It was almost funny to be on the other side of a defensive meltdown for a change: in 15 minutes Spurs basically recapped our whole repertoire of defensive blunders this season. The Walker back-pass was reminiscent of "the Skrtel", while Lloris kind of did the "Reina vs Man City." Then Defoe with a dreadful touch gave Suarez the ball inside the penalty area and Assou-Ekotto conceded a stupid penalty. We should say thanks to Spurs for the points (and for getting the "never beat top 6 side" monkey off our backs), but not forget to learn the lesson.
One more thing I have to mention: how fucking good is Verthongen? Forget the 2 goals, he has this air of calmness around him, like the play slows down when he is around. I couldn't help but admire his tackle on Sturridge. Or when Gerrard was all over his in the center circle and he spun him around and kept going forward like it's the easiest thing to do. What a player. I really really wish we signed him instead of Spurs.
