Yarmolenko

Perhaps we are feeding certain elements in the media misinformation to allow us to focus on our real target.
I doubt it though.
Yarmolenko was impressive enough in the Euros 2012 but doesn't seem to strike me as our current style of player

I think Yarmolenko fits the profile Rodgers is looking for. He shares some traits with all 3 of our "major" targets this summer: he is a powerful and direct runner like Mkhitaryan, he is energetic in attack and defense like Costa and he likes to dribble past defenders like Willian. But he is the opposite of Willian in that he is a player who likes to create goals and assists himself, he doesn't play it safe and if your goal is keeping possession he is not the best player for that. He will run at defenders at every opportunity and when he is not successful, he loses the ball. But he is also a player who creates and scores goals and he is a natural winner.

His "tricks" are simple but very effective - everyone knows he likes to cut in on his left foot, but that doesn't make stopping him any easier. A few months ago he scored with his left in a crucial game against Poland national team and their coach was asked why they couldn't stop it, since "whole Europe knows how Yarmolenko cuts inside from the right and shoots." The Polish coach said that the whole Europe also knows how Messi plays, but it doesn't mean they can stop him in a game.

Yarmolenko is a type who doesn't hide when things are not going well and I think that's why even Dynamo's fans get frustrated with him at times; when the team is struggling as a whole he is usually one of the first targets of angry fans (that's not unusual though; even the great Sheva himself had to endure lots of negativity from Ukrainan fans as well). Again I would compare him to Robben who goes through periods when nothing is going right and his own fans turn on him - and then he starts carrying the team and fans forget their frustrations… until next time. The transition from Ukrainian football to Premier league will not be seamless; I think he will definitely need to be "educated" by Rodgers about being more careful when in possession and will need to adjust to a different style of football, because Dynamo plays a more counterattack based game where possession is not valued nearly as much as it is here.

is he better than Willian?

Overall, I would say Yarmolenko is a real talent and I like his personality, but objectively he would be riskier signing than some of our other targets, because there is more potential for things to go wrong with adapting to different style of football, lifestyle, cultural issues etc. I would take a chance on him for a reasonable amount (£15-18M), but buying him in a situation where it HAS TO WORK, and pretty much right away, makes me a little uncomfortable.

I think Willian was a safer bet. Despite the (outdated) stereotype that Brazilians don't do well in England, I had almost no doubt that he would click with Coutinho and our system. Oh, well… Yarmolenko is more of a goal threat than Willian though, people who didn't want Willian based on his stats should be more pleased with the possibility of getting Yarmolenko.

I think he is better than Babel in 2 ways:
1. As a player, he has better awareness of what's around him
2. He is a man and a leader, not a big baby

So yes, he is definitely better.

I'm guessing we'd line up like this was Yar in the team.

-----------------Sturridge-----------------
--Suarez-----Coutinho-----------Yar--

I've read he's got 1 year left on his contract. If true we shouldnt be paying anywhere near that.

No, 2 years.

And in Dynamo it's a common practice to extend a contract even when a player is on the verge of sale. I don't remember any player of value leaving or even being close to leaving as a free agent in recent years. So 2 years or 5 years - doesn't really matter in this case.

Would people be happy with this lad + sakho as our signings before the window closes? with a healthy (& hopefully motivated) suarez returning, i think it would give us a good squad to try and challenge for the cups and make a push for 4th.

Unfortunately I didn't see enough of Konoplyanka to develop a good sense of him as a player. I've read and heard a few people who consider him a bigger talent than Yarmolenko. When I saw them playing together in the national team, Yarmolenko seemed like more of a finished product (they are the same age). Yarmolenko also has a more consistent goal-scoring record and is more used to dealing with pressure, playing in Dynamo as opposed to Dnipro. Not sure why some people seem to rate Konoplyanka more, maybe I'm missing something.

hansern truly does live in cloud cuckoo land.

We'll see in a few days. Better to live with a bit of hope then moan constantly even though the transfer window isnt closed yet.

IF we dont sign at least 2 players THEN I'll start moaning aswell.
For now its pointless.
