Xherdan Shaqiri

I think Markovic has a bit more about him than just a glorified kick-and-run merchant. You seldom see kick and runners cutting through players in the middle like he does. He's very raw though. £25m would be paying for potential than final product. As I have said, he reminds me of Sterling and another Sterling making similar runs and tracking back tirelessly on the pitch at the same time would be some sight.

I know fuck all about Markovic and would be interested to know why we've seemingly switched our attention to him from Shaqiri. Maybe because Shaqiri wants to play central and Markovic is more of a wide player?

From watching Shaqiri at the WC and the Youtubes of Markovic I think that is arse about tit.

We need better than both of them if we're replacing suarez. markovic just reminds me of patrick berger(not in a good way) and shaqiri just seems average.

Paddy Berger was an excellent player.

Was he excellent? I liked Berger, but he wasn't top drawer, he wasn't even really a great wide player but we tried to shoehorn him into being a winger. He had a great dig on him which won us games out the blue, but he could be incredibly frustrating too.

He had a good shot on him but apart from that he was a bit of a headless chicken. he scored some great goals though. Looking at markovic he doesnt look particularly skillful and how he tries to beat a man is to kick and rush. nowhere near worth 25m.

I'm surprised there's so much dissent about Markovic. He's spectacularly talented. He's the kind of player - a bit like Sterling - who could play in virtually any position on the pitch.

He'll be world class within a couple of years IMO.

Shaqiri is very good too, mind.

He's only 20 so a lot of that fee would be about buying potential. I don't know enough about Markovic to judge really (lots of people rate him very highly though) but this is just the type of transfer I want us to make ie. buy the next James Rodriguez before he becomes a James Rodriguez.

IMO he was top drawer but was too injury prone; I'll alter my opinion to at his best he was excellent.

When he stopped in one place long enough to show it, his distribution was excellent - witness that superb long pass which gave Owen the chance to nab the winner in the 2001 FA Cup Final. He could run around rather aimlessly at times, but I saw that as Uncle Roy's fault as much as Berger's. Uncle Roy was terrible for tinkering with players' positions (he played Berger on the right for a spell FFS) and I reckon it ended up confusing them. In those days we turned into a bit of a graveyard for previously good players who arrived at Anfield and sank without trace. Berger wasn't the only one.

Berger was a good player but he was never top drawer. He wasn't in the same league as someone like Overmars, say.

There was a game where Berger told Evans he could play upfront, so Evans duly played him there and he was piss poor, so he dragged Berger off and bollocked him. Such was Evan's tactical skills.

You're right though, when he played central particularly (which he preferred), his passing could be brilliant, but it was too infrequent.

It's not just me then? Despite his age and the season he's just had, the £25m tag seems completely unjustified. Like I said, I'm amazed at the lack of outcry about his fee (and others), just because they're not English. People bang on about English players being overpriced, but then seem happy to pay a premium for any European player.

Its funny that ain't it, it just goes to show how utterly clueless and hypocritical some fans are.

This is another player with potential signing, hes obviously talented but he is far from the finished product and there's no guarantee he will come here and make a difference for us in the PL, but the name! its that name! that's the key, as long as he has that foreign name then we can be content, his football manager score is good also, lol.

He does look a good player though from watching him in a few games last season and you can understand why Rodgers is interested, he fits the Rodgers player profile to a tee, 25 mill is ott, no doubt about it but what can we do if Rodgers is prepared to pay that? back him and trust him that he knows what hes doing and judge later i reckon, obviously its normal to question these things but screw moaning and acting the dickhead about these things day in day out before a player has even kicked a ball for us.

Things gone silent on the Shaqiri front. Trail gone cold? Did he accept the new Bayern contract?
