Aurelio starting at CM, does nothing for the whole game, then stays on when you finally make the (wrong) change..? WTF?

Veronin gets a run before Riera..? WTF?

We need two goals and you leave two DM on until 20 minutes from the end... WTF?

Seriously...

Not defending the decisions in question, but maybe Rafa would say it was because he's prioritising the league? I hope so, because otherwise I'm as stuck as you are for an explanation of what Rafa was trying to achieve.

i think he was defo resting riera for saturday, but even so, it was so so obvious that the midfield was being overrun even after 20 mins. needless waste of points which probably mean we'll be going to the last game of the group stages now requiring us to be more competitive for more games!

It just leaves us no room for error now. We were never going to win them all, so at least we know we need 4 points out of 6 vs Lyon. Easier said than done but still do-able with the right mentality.

Why would we need to rest anyone?

It's the beginning of the season, we're playing on the Tues and our next game is on Sunday. Are our players *that* fucked at this stage of the season?

Anyways, I don't think that's it. I just think Rafa tried to maintain the 4-2-3-1 formation as we had it last season - to cope with a tricky away tie - and it failed miserably.

You can add to that list the disaster that is Kuyt and Yossi playing as our two wide options. It leaves us playing predictably narrow. Riera or Babel on one of the flanks is a must for me.

i think playing reira tonight would have jaded him for saturday and that's what rafa was thinking. however a subs role for 20 mins shouldn't affect him

I had no problems with the formation or the subs tonight. What is concerning is the fact that when we're not playing well it's not just 3 or 4 players way below their normal levels, it's nearly the entire team.

1st half display was our worst for ages.
2nd half was a different story, but once they survuved the first 15 minutes w/o conceding it has became a very difficult task. It clearly wasn't our day.

Starting Aurelio lost us the game. He should have started two natural CM's. Not done.
[/quote]

It wasn't just Aurelio.

It was the pairing of two completely unathletic midfielders that was the problem

it's far too early in the season to be resting players.

rafa lined up a team today that was simply unbelievable.

he then went on to make the wrong subs at the wrong time.

not a good day by anyone's standards.

i don't think we will ever see a midfield partnership of lucas and aurelio again, nor should we

we missed Mascherano massively. Aurelio wasn't too bad in the second half actually*, but it was too late.

* edit: when in posession

Calm down people.

Shit performances and results happen from time to time. Get over it.

every game so far this season where we've played a top 6 type team?

our central midfield and central defence is the worst it has ever been under rafa. i just don't see that solid spine we all talked about anymore.

The worst thing from last night is that all that confidence we had built up for Sunday with recent results was completely wiped out last night.

Sunday is a must win if we want to win the league.

indeed the facts are irrelevant in the face of unfounded optimism.

spurs, villa and now the italians. if this is your interpretation of time to time then its not me who hasn't got a clue

No it won't be.

There's a difference between being shite and playing shite. We know we're good enough to win anywhere, and have proved before that we don't let one mediocre performance determine the next.

Some people are getting far too worked up over this.

Yes, they certainly do.

But my goodness, we didn't do much to help ourselves out today, did we?

How do you gain confidence from being shite against every half decent team you've played this year, nevermind Chelsea.

I'm not sure Villa or even Spurs are half decent. I don't think they're in Fiorentina's league for a start.

Let's brow beat this Sunday should we be shite against Chelsea. Far too early for me to kill myself for one lost CL game in a table of 4 teams. If we do not qualify as top team, we can still go through as second right? Take it easy lah.

By knowing that you beat Chelsea home and away last season, by knowing that you finished above them last season, by knowing that you've scored more goals than any other team in the fucking country, by knowing that one shit performance doesn't determine everything, and most importantly - by knowing that your mindset isn't as fucking brittle and swayable(?) as yours Dreamy.
