Wigan owner Dave Whelan claimed Everton are not big enough for Roberto Martinez after the FA Cup win that has seen his manager’s standing rocket.

Whelan admitted Martinez will be in even bigger demand following his masterminding of lowly Wigan’s remarkable win over mega-rich Manchester City at Wembley.

Martinez, 39, is the front-runner to replace David Moyes at Everton following his appointment as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor at Manchester United.

But Whelan, who admitted he would swap relegation-threatened Wigan’s historic FA Cup triumph for Premier League survival, taunted Everton by saying the Goodison Park club are too small to match Martinez’s ambitions.

“Roberto is always in demand,” said Whelan. “But he deals with it. He tells me everything and he’s the most honest man you’ll ever meet.

“If anybody approaches him he comes to me and says such a club has approached me.

Whenever he wants to go, I’ll release him immediately, but he’ll only go to a big, big club and I don’t think Everton are big enough.

“It’s Roberto’s decision. All I do is support him. If he comes to me and says ‘I want to go to whichever club’ I’ll say ‘okay’ and release him immediately because we have such a great working relationship.

“I don’t think he’ll go this season, but if he does I’ll shake his hand and wish him good luck because he’s been a brilliant manager for us.”

Great support from his chairman. Not sure where he'll go but the Everton job is there for the taking and he needs to leave Wigan because he would be wasted in the Championship. It's probably the best available job that's available at the moment and his talent for picking decent players up for a nickle and a dime, and bringing through youngsters, will still be required at Everton.

If the Newcastle job opens, then I think he'll probably be a better fit there. In terms of current playing personnel, they'd probably suit his style better.
