Right, I can hold my water no longer, let's have a think about the first game of the season...

How are we going to line up (formation, personnel, new arrivals)?
Will we get off to a flyer?

Given our gnarly run of fixtures after the first weekend it's absolutely imperative that we hit the ground running with 3 points and continue the momentum that last night hinted at. Steve Clarke might prove a decent enough manager in the long-term but I've a hunch that he'll struggle initially. We should really be winning this.

I reckon we'll line-up like this...

------------------------Reina-------------------------

Johnson------Skrtel--------Agger---------Enrique

-----------------Lucas-----------------------------------
---------------------------------Allen--------------------
------------------Gerrard--------------------------------

Downing-------------------------------------Borini----
------------------------Suarez--------------------------

...and win 0-3.

I missed the game last night unfortunately but it was encouraging to hear we played well. Even if it was 'only' FC Gomel. Good form, is good form regardless of whether it's still effectively pre-season or not.

West Brom is going to be a different challenge though and it's hard to say at this point whether it's all going to go swimmingly for us. I'm hoping though... always hoping.

Any win will do. WBA are a good home team and it will be tough. A good display against Leverkusen and we'll be ready.

STEVE Clarke admits he has had to bring preparations for Albion’s Barclays Premier League opener against Liverpool forward due to losing 11 seniors players to midweek international duty after the weekend.

The Baggies kick-off their campaign against the Reds on Saturday week (ko 3pm) and will be without several key men until after Wednesday night’s friendlies with their respective countries.

But the Albion boss insists it is no excuse and has every faith the side he fields against Brendan Rodgers’ outfit will be well drilled.

“More experienced and better managers than me have said that it’s a nonsense to play international matches in the week leading up to the start of the season,” said Clarke, speaking at the official media unveiling of his four new signings Ben Foster, Markus Rosenberg, Yassine El Ghanassy and Claudio Yacob yesterday.

“I lose 11 players next week so we’ve had to do a lot of work this week towards the game against Liverpool.

“But that’s something everyone has to deal with. We’re not the only club that’s got that problem.

“Liverpool will have that problem and we just have to deal with it.

“I know it’s being addressed and I think the year after next they are going to lose this friendly in the week building up to the season, which is a good thing.

“We’ll have a couple of training sessions when the players are back to make sure we’ve got our ideas in place.

“But hopefully the work we’ve been doing all along in pre-season has given my players a good grounding in what I expect from them and how I expect them to approach the game, no matter who the opponents are.

“There are little bits you can tweak, depending on who you’re playing, towards the weekend.

“So, don’t worry! We’ll be ready.”

Clarke is also hopeful of adding further new recruits to his squad before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.

But he insisted he is happy to run with squad he currently has at his disposal should the Baggies not add to their ranks.

“The idea was always to freshen things up and I think we’ve done that,” he added.

“If we can do the business we’ll try and bring in one or two more players, if possible.

“If the window shut now I’d be happy with what we’ve got.

“If we can improve it then that would be great as well.”

Thank god they're fucking the early friendly off next year, it's bloody stupid having one at this point in the year.

It's also very different being the guy in overall charge, as opposed to working with smaller-scale details of individual and team play. Numerous coaches fail to make the step up and it remains to be seen whether Clarke can escape that fate.

A win is a must.

By fuck we need a positive start to the season.

But, we must show intent - "Irish Rafa" needs to show the players and fans that we should trust him.

We'll crush West Brom. Suarez show again, and again, and again, and again. Until we buy someone who could help him carry us.

Hence why I'm both thrilled and worried about the team's performance against Gomel. 'Cause basically it was Suarez running the show as usual.

completely. apart from a wondergoal from glojo, all our goals came from suarez being a genius. we really never look like scoring without it.

Gomel home/away. With and without Suarez. Night and day performance wise.

Prediction: West Brom 0 - 3 Liverpool.

The only worry I think we'll have, is Lukaku, but I'm sure Agger (if he's still here) will sort him out. Should be an easy game for us, if we can play like we did against Gomel, or like that at least.

Thats the problem isn't it - it kind of makes me nervious when you have one creative outlet that your team depends on in the final third. However, I use to think that when McMoneyman use to play for us - and after he left we adapted and changed and we still scored goals. I think the first game against Gomel as bad as we were should not be used as the standard to compare our team when Suarez is either in or out of the team. It's always tough going away to these far away lands and trying to play your game. Agree with the Modo team selection - although BR may not introduce Allen straight away unless of course there are a lot training sessions prior to the West Brom game.
