Would you give him another year if you were an Arsenal fan?

He's done so much for them, but they really should have walked the league this year given their squad and how poor everyone else has been and it looks like they are blowing it yet again. I've always thought calls for him to be fired were harsh, but after this year I'm wondering when the does the gratitude run out? His teams are famously fragile and gutless.

Their squad isn't that good. Same old disjointed defence, attack heavy midfield, and purple patch strikers.

Only Sanchez and cech are worldy quality for them. The rest are cowardly and weak

Oh, and Wenger. He'd have to go. He makes the same mistakes year in year out

For me he passed his sell-by date when they paid the stadium off and pots of money became available, but he was stuck in too much of a rut to spend it. Replacing him will be a risk for them, but IMO it's a few years overdue.

Depends on if they want to spend big or not. He isn't that great taking care of big egos. He makes average players better but top class players play worse. They need a manager like Klopp that will make the supporters feel good and laugh. A manager that will make the players run that extra yards.

I don't know what he'll do when he leaves, because he's such an anhedonic creature. He seems to get no real joy from being a manager, even when his team's doing well. If you watch him on the touchline it's just remorseless misery, frustration and/or anger. So if he's like that doing the job he loves, god help him when it's over. Maybe he'll suddenly stop that obsessive player's diet of his and balloon out eating burgers all day, or wander off Dan Draper-style and join an ashram. Can't say I care. I just want this graceless, bitter, stubborn, self-obsessed misanthrope gone. And I suspect most gooners do, too, so, all together now, you London dimwits: 'Sign on, Sign o-on...hur hur hur, and you'll never get a job...hur hur hur'

Good timing this thread. I was just saying to my father tonight, during our weekly phone call, that Wenger has cost them the title ..... again (he also gifted two to the Mancs) with his tactics, team selections and refusal to spend the money he's got in the kitty on reinforcing the squad.

He should be gone at the season's end. With any luck he'll get another year or three.

When someone like Patrick Vieira makes a point of omitting any reference to Wenger in his recent speech about his career and influences, it's a real sign of how bad Wenger's become as a manager - he shuns anyone who's willing to stand up to him, resents any criticism, no matter how polite and qualified it might be, and limits any other input to the massive presence that is Steve 'Yes Boss' Bould. For all the talk of what he changed in his early years at the club, he's actually taken it backwards in recent years. Too insecure to encourage potential successors among his staff, he's just a tribute act to himself.

You're fond of him I take it?

I hate Arsenal, I know one Arsenal fan and he's a self important, selfish wanker. I know you can't tarnish them all with the same brush, but he hates Liverpool and constantly gives it out about the fans, history, etc "its always your year"...

Wenger is a bitter cunt who doesn't know how to win or lose gracefully. I adore watching his tactical prowess get torn to shreds by the Stoke's & Bolton's of the league each season, they're a massive pretentious laughing stock, long may it continue.

The Arsenal fans I know are great but the big difference is obviously that they're Norwegian and not from Laaaandaan bruv.

Wenger is perfectly described by Macca. He just looks miserable all the time. Has that look like he has finally realized that the coat has won and he'll never get the best of that zipper.
This could possibly be his last season. Wheter or not thats good news for Arsenal I dont know.

What top class players has he made play worse? Vieira, Henry, Pires, Petit, Overmars, Ozil, Sanchez, Cazorla.....all improved or at least maintained their quality playing for Wenger.

hmmmm.. I'm not sure about that. 5 of those players were at the club over 10 years ago, is Ozil really better under Wenger? Despite more recent flashes of brilliance, he was a disaster in his first season and has gradually clawed back some credibility. It's even arguable that Cazorla and Sanchez have been fairly patchy.

Take a look at Sanchez's last three seasons at Barca. And Ozil has been at least as impressive this season as at any point in his career. Cazorla has played his best football under Wenger.mas has Giroud.

Now, I do realise that the loopy mentalist Arn made the original post, so it's obviously going to be shit and flawed, even to the point it's impossible to even agree on what is meant by 'top class' players. Does Henry fall into to that category when he arrived as a young failure from Juventus?

It could be argued that Wenger very rarely buys established, top class players anyway, so it's even more utterly fucking pointless. But even the ones you could point out don't support the argument, like Sanchez, Ozil and Cazorla.

I work with a Gooner that remains a fan of Wenger based on the argument that he's kept them in the top 4 whilst paying off the stadium.

I don't really have any strong feelings about Wenger one way or another but that's a fair argument and I don't think he gets enough credit for that. We have first hand experience of how easy it is to fall away from the top and struggle to get back in, as have Utd recently.

That being said, there are pretty valid question marks about whether he's capable of building a top class team again. They have got a pretty decent squad at the moment and a couple top class additions would make them strong title contenders... the problem is that nobody trusts Wenger to make those signings any more.

Who would they get that everyone would trust though?

The answer's been screaming in his face for a few seasons now and he's been blind to it. All he had to do was buy Lucas for 38m and they'd have won a few more league titles by now.

They must regret not going bigger for Suarez now.

I wonder what our breaking point would have been at that time?

Yes, well, they always use that argument, but it's an incredibly foggy sort of argument. I mean, he still had money to strengthen the squad during those years but he barely touched it and the team under-performed. And as that era recedes into the past, what's their excuse these days? The problems are the same old problems. Everyone seems able to see it except him. He regards criticism of the squad as a criticism of himself, so the idea of replacing players appears to strike him as an admission of weakness on his part.

Yeah. He's been a great manager for them, but while him and his many fans can point to his stadium led financial restrictions, that is no longer valid, so his reluctance to invest in certain areas of the squad can now only be explained by an almost manic arrogance and misplaced belief.

He had what? 60-80m to spend last summer and claimed there was not ONE suitable outfield player for him to buy

You can understand those Arsenal fans who get very frustrated when they hear that, and see every season go the same way

Its not like he hasn't ever won the title before. But it seems he is ever more obsessed with how its won. And that's why he never does any more

That 42m + 1 pound encapsulates Arsenal - smug , trying to be too clever for their own good while maintaining a veil of correctness.

Yeah, that was infuriating, and I was delighted that FSG told them where to stick it. The club came out of that whole debacle with some credit. The fact that people like Piers Morgan were whinging loudly about how wrong it was that we weren't selling despite their oh so clever offer, was hilarious.

And making John "Boom" Cross look even more stupid than usual.

I don't understand their mentality that getting in the Top 4 all the time is success. You get in the Top 4 to qualify for the European Cup. What's the point of you then don't do what's necessary to get the players who could win it for you? It's not like they don't have the funds, they have stadium and London is a draw.

It's like a constant circle of failure rather than the one of success they paint. Financially maybe, but football is a sport and is about results and trophies.

See I want us to qualify for next year, but this is countered by the fact that I don't think we can win it. So if we qualify, I'd want squad improvement, to make that more of a possibility. Arsenal it seems don't want to do that, given their record of 16 qualifications on the trot only to end in failure each time.

But my experience of their fans generally is that they are as @Silver Sean says; effete cunts.

I don't get it either. Our last season in the champions league annoyed the life out of me because we had no chance, it must be nice to qualify every season but what's the point?
