Weekend games 21-22 sep

Can't stand any of them, obviously, but fair fucks to Arsenal. Holding out for a point, and nearly all 3, at the Emptyhad with 10 men for the whole second half takes some doing, regardless of the negative tactics and time wasting. They were well disciplined and that speaks to good defensive coaching from The Hood and / or his team.
As much as we've been tighter at the back this season (often more by luck than judgement) and even with the fewest goals conceded in the league, I don't think we could have done that.

Was a 2-2 but such a hard watch watch even when it was 11 men.
All those games we had with Klopp and Pep, some blockbusters so neutrals will remember them more fondly. Arteta has created a super resilient hard to bear Arsenal but those feels like he is PL's Simone at times.

That Gabriel goal is a foul all day imho.
Martinelli blocks Ederson without even going for the ball.
Arsenal’s set pieces are just two players on the GK and then attack the ball in the area around.

Lego head is a fucking whopper. Lolz at the 2-2 goal.

Weren't the refs saying that they'd clamp down on those types of fouls this season?
Way to follow through...

It’s never ever a foul. Martinelli goes into an unoccupied space right beside the keeper, there is no contact on the keeper and there’s nothing to my knowledge in the law book that says keepers must be allowed some sort of bubble of freedom. A player standing in front of the keeper when the kicks taken isn’t a foul.

Wouldn't wish an ACL on anyone, but I'd happily see Rodri banned for a season for betting or something.
Not sure it was that serious as he was able to walk off.
Lucas also walked off, so did Van Dijk.
An ACL injury affects the stability.

Nah it wasn't. If you wanted to you could find some sort of impedance at every corner. He doesn't have to go for the ball all he has to do is stand there and not move.

They literally played a back 6 the whole of the second half..
What does it matter? It was City not Wolves. The fact they came within seconds of the win is justification enough. Though City were absolutely pathetic. Zero width once Doku went off. They didn't deserve a point but it suits us, I guess, that they got one.

Haaland should have been off for forcefully bouncing the ball off Gabriel 's head after he scored. No action taken.

And it pretty much worked barring a set piece at the end.

If Arse could do that with 10 men, could we do it with 11?

Probably not in the make up of Salah/Diaz to be defending the wide areas like we saw today from Havertz and Martinelli.

People critique Arsenal for not going at City, like we have, but they don't have the same firepower as we did with Bobby, Mane and Salah. And secondly, even with that firepower, we never won in the league with Klopp there.

If we got a few taken 4pts off them, or defended a little better over the years, we might have 2 more league titles too.

Arse lost the league last year when they played for a draw against City, there were for the taking with a few games left but showed no ambition. Not sure Arse have the ambition to win despite having invested well, Yes, we should have won more titles but what have Arse won exactly with Arteta though despite having spent huge amounts more than Klopp?
Also, could this Arse side get over 97pts to chase when City are flying? I doubt it with the way they play at times.

I never put it down to the games we lost or drew with them that we did not win the title, we lost the title by drawing with other dross in the league. I don't think we would have had the nerve to stay ahead of them if they were chasing us for that one point. Something that people don't get is that Liverpool have more rivals - both historic and current than any other team. We got to Everton in those seasons and they want to kill our players, City go there and get an easy ride - that's the difference.

Ah yes on the rivals bit. I agree. Historic rivals.

I put together a table some time back regarding this.

We have folk who hate us for one reason or another.

Chelsea (Mourinho years)
Everton (local rivals)
United (historic rivals)
Spurs (because of that CL final)
Arsenal (early 90s)

and then a few old old minor rivals like Forrest (Clough years) and Newcastle (4-3 games).

City don't really have anyone. Most of their rivals are in division 1 and division 2. Got a little rivalry with Spurs.

And United (who basically support them vs us these days).

Which is kind of why I'm delighted they are developing a hated rivalry with Arsenal.

If only Arse had shown this sort of fight in those seasons we needed them to take 2pts off City.

They have been doing it for the longest time. No one seemed to be putting a stop to it. Last season they had 1 man on the keeper, this season they have increased it to 2.

I think Gabriel scored the same way against us last season.

Maybe we should start exploring doing the same since we seemed to be favouring the in-swingers. Virgil should be unstoppable if we do it right.

No, thats a block to stop the GK moving by a player not interested in the ball. Its a free kick. Arsenal are lucky that their set piece routines arent drawing fouls every time.

Arteta has adapted Big Sam’s tactics.

Why are we so shit at corners? Compared to arsenal at least. Saw that Gabriel has scored 16 goals since he made his arsenal debut. Youd imagine a bulk of those are from set pieces, and with our wide array of players who are famed for the passing; the fuck are we so shite? AC Milan seemed an aberration rather than the norm

We were the 8th best team in the league last season in terms of goals from set pieces with 14. Arsenal had 20 but we had nearly the same xG, so it could be down to a bit of luck in all honesty that we didn't score more.
Briggs seems to be doing a good job now and its always good to get some fresh ideas. Hopefully we'll improve.

We're usually one of the top teams in defending set pieces.

Didn't we score from a corner in the last game? And from a second 'virtual corner' from Trent?!

I really really dont want Arsenal to win the league. That legohead manager and their awful fans will be even more unbearable. For ever. Cant happen.

If City get a points deduction this season then someone else need to step up.

The problem is once City get relegated to the Vanarama National Northern League, this will give Arsenal their best chance in 2 decades to go on and win a few titles under that fucking plastic thunderbird that sounds like a dying pigeon every time he opens his cocky mouth.

Really hope PSG are planning a move for Saliba next summer and likewise Madrid/Barca for Gabriel.
