Valdes

Rob Green could fill an entire archive with those videos. Having said that, you could make an embarrassing video for pretty much any goalkeeper in the world. As Brizzle says though, the amount of times that Valdes has been caught with the ball at his feet is a bit unnerving.

Yeah, it's pretty obvious that we could improve with another keeper. Valdes, at this stage of his career, seems like an odd choice.

It's clearly a stop gap.

That's kinda what I'm worried about.

If we weren't worried enough to look for a replacement in the summer window(which only closed a few weeks ago), why do we feel the need to, presumably, pay big wages to a player who is getting on in age.

I'd understand if this was a young player on the up, that could be a long term solution. Surely we should have planned a bit better.

Exactly, its not like these are new concerns that didn't exist last season

I agree, it seems like poor planning or a knee jerk reaction.

Well, maybe get Valdes till end of year. Dump Mignolet in summer, and sign long-term no. 1.

Makes sense only if we can get Valdes on a good deal.

Valdes beats Reina in distribution.

He hates playing the long pass straight to the forwards. (Reina was exceptionally good at the quick long pass to release the forwards, but Valdes has no parallel when it comes to quick distribution along the ground. He demands the ball from CBs .....a few bloopers is not going to change my mind.

As I understand it this has been in the works ever since Monaco fell through (maybe before but they had more money). It could either be a) top class competition to compete with Ming b) they thought Miing would step up after pre-season training but he never seems to learn and they need a better short-term, inexpensive (transfer fee-wise) replacement or c) a quality experienced keeper to bring Ming along.

A keeper was not a major priority in the Summer and you can't expect us to do everything in one transfer window (rebuild the attack, strengthen/deepen the squad, address the back line issues). Some transfers will be failures, that is expected and completely normal, give them time to sort it out.

I thought a keeper was a big priority in the summer to be honest. Not as big as replacing the Suarez sized hole in our attack, but big enough.

I've no problem giving them time to sort it out, but this seems a strange way to do it. Mignolet isn't good enough, but he's not as big a disaster as some are making out. We can survive another few months and get a better, longer term, replacement in January, or in the summer.

Valdes has been fantastic for the last few years. I'm getting the impression people are commenting having not really seen much of him.

The concern is the injury and adapting new team / league for sure but to suggest he is some kind of joke keeper is foolish.

Correct, haven't seen much lately.

I still reckon he's familiar with unicycles and red noses though.

It would be very strange if the deal collapsed due to that. I'll wait for someone else but the Mirror to report it.

Brendan Rodgers: No Spanish Player Coming to Anfield (What Happened with Valdes)

What looked to be a potential marriage made in heaven between Liverpool FC and Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper, Victor Valdes looks to have hit the rocks before it’s even begun.
Like many love matches before it, both parties had their doubts. Victor Valdes, who has admitted to both Liverpool and friends his admiration and even "love" for the English club and even the Premier league, wanted to see if Liverpool could still be competitive this season while the club needed to know if the 'keeper was going to recover from the knee injury that he is still suffering from.

The waters were also being muddied by a false story doing the rounds—a story the player’s agent, Gines Carvajal, has been quick to deny—that Liverpool wanted to have Valdes on a four-day trial to assess his fitness levels before making any commitment.
Needless to say, stories flying around didn’t exactly help the situation and although Liverpool want Victor Valdes and are going to do their level best to get him, it is equally clear the doubts that have begun to creep into the mind of Brendan Rodgers and his advisers about the goalkeeper’s fitness (and even his form last season, not as solid as in previous ones) have slowed down the process.
I have spoken to a number of the Barcelona players about the situation and they all tell me to a man that no one is presently in touch with Valdes.
Normally, in these type of situations agents can’t say enough, yetCarvajal has said absolutely nothing other than the issuing of the denial following the four-day trial rumour.
The matter is further complicated by the fact that it seems clear that Victor Valdes was less than amused when Monaco, according to the advice he has been given, reneged on a legally binding agreement to sign him.

A legal process now seems inevitable and with the matter in the hands of lawyers, it could be months before things are resolved.
I interviewed Brendan Rodgers for an article published today (Monday) in the Spanish newspaper I write for Diario AS. My final question to Brendan was “are you going to sign any more Spanish players?”
It wasn't an innocent question as the stories coming from the club were that Brendan wanted Victor Valdes and the goalkeeper was determined to go to Anfield only a month ago.
His answer was short—in fact about as short as it is possible to be—and unequivocal. “No,” he said.
We’ll see.

Not "Categorically no" but just "no". Which means maybe Valdes really won't be joining.

We're being linked with the Espanyol keeper, Kiko Casilla, as well.

There was a mention on the radio of Iker Casillas himself being linked with us the other day, though I haven't heard it repeated since.

Casillas in goal will make us miss Mignolet.
He's no better than Mignolet dealing with crosses, and is as error prone.

Cech would be a sensational buy, maybe our shit start would convince Chelsea to sell him to us.

What's the betting it was for the same reason he rejected us, namely not wanting to do a trial period first? Either he's not confident his injury has healed/will heal or he's way too far up himself. Either way, bullet dodged (more's the pity in your case 😉).
