Brendan Rodgers: No Spanish Player Coming to Anfield (What Happened with Valdes)

What looked to be a potential marriage made in heaven between Liverpool FC and Barcelona and Spain goalkeeper, Victor Valdes looks to have hit the rocks before it’s even begun.
Like many love matches before it, both parties had their doubts. Victor Valdes, who has admitted to both Liverpool and friends his admiration and even "love" for the English club and even the Premier league, wanted to see if Liverpool could still be competitive this season while the club needed to know if the 'keeper was going to recover from the knee injury that he is still suffering from.
The waters were also being muddied by a false story doing the rounds—a story the player’s agent, Gines Carvajal,
has been quick to deny—that Liverpool wanted to have Valdes on a four-day trial to assess his fitness levels before making any commitment.
Needless to say, stories flying around didn’t exactly help the situation and although Liverpool want Victor Valdes and are going to do their level best to get him, it is equally clear the doubts that have begun to creep into the mind of Brendan Rodgers and his advisers about the goalkeeper’s fitness (and even his form last season, not as solid as in previous ones) have slowed down the process.
I have spoken to a number of the Barcelona players about the situation and they all tell me to a man that no one is presently in touch with Valdes.
Normally, in these type of situations agents can’t say enough, yetCarvajal has said absolutely nothing other than the issuing of the denial following the four-day trial rumour.
The matter is further complicated by the fact that it seems clear that Victor Valdes was less than amused when Monaco, according to the advice he has been given, reneged on a legally binding agreement to sign him.
A legal process now seems inevitable and with the matter in the hands of lawyers, it could be months before things are resolved.
I interviewed Brendan Rodgers for an article published today (Monday) in the Spanish newspaper I write for
Diario AS. My final question to Brendan was “are you going to sign any more Spanish players?”
It wasn't an innocent question as the stories coming from the club were that Brendan wanted Victor Valdes and the goalkeeper was determined to go to Anfield only a month ago.
His answer was short—in fact about as short as it is possible to be—and unequivocal. “No,” he said.
We’ll see.
