I'm a little saddened it's not commonplace by now, but happy that players (at least a couple) feel that they can come out now.

Are they happy though, or are they just doing it to preempt a tabloid outing?
Possibly the latter, but regardless, it's not easy to forsee a gradual increase in the amount of openly gay players over the next few years.
Many journalists know exactly what players are gay & even socialise with players & their partners without 'outing' them these days, perhaps because they're unsure of public reaction to them for doing so, but it's still a clear example of a gradual social acceptance finally making inroads into football.

My immediate thought was 'Oh I hope it's...' and I was thinking of a modern day Keane or Sounness, someone known as hard as nails on the pitch, to try to combat the stereotype.

Incidentally my stereotyping like that ended when I was 19 & the Asian fella I worked with who was built like a brick shithouse, had a voice that bellowed as a ships horn & was an excellent kickboxer at national level, introduced me to his boyfriend on a night out after we'd worked together for a year.
