Trent, Salah and VVD

Yeah it would be radio silence if there wasn't a willingness to stay. Both virg and Salah have engaged on their side of the dance; I've just not seen Trent engage yet.
I suspect with Trent - well I have a vision with Madrid giving us an offer - "Listen ... we let you beat us 5-0 tonight, and in return we take Trent back to Madrid with us ?"

A year ago Klopp had just announced to the team he was leaving.

It's more than conceivable that the players would want to know who was taking over, which new management / coaching team would be in place and what new tactics would be employed - to say nothing of whether we'd drop off a cliff or not. Who would want to sign a contract extension under those circumstances?

I feel that it is all coming to a head now (VvD on the verge of signing a new contract, Salah in the media and it's clear a renewal is being discussed, Trent shouting his mouth off, simply because they are all happy with the new manager & mgt / coaching team, very happy with the way we are playing (the style of which could extend their sell by dates) and so are now delighted to sign up again (as long as wages and term are agreeable).

You can't blame Klopp (for resigning), the players (for wanting to see what is happening) or the club (because the players wouldn't sign before now) for this situation. At least I don't.
Great post. I agree with most of it, I don’t blame Klopp or the players. I don’t even blame the club for wanting to get the most value out of a contract. I do blame the club for failing to get in a sporting director after Edward’s left, and how FSG handle a lot of these situations. They’ve created this situation, and now might have to face the fact they’re going to have to pay a little over the odds for aging players. As we’ve done zero succession planning for Salah or Virgil, they really only have themselves to blame.

From BBC gossip column:

Liverpool and Real held talks over Alexander-Arnold's future before the pair's Champions League game at Anfield on Wednesday. (Marca - in Spanish)

No they didn't. They met and had lunch. Like every time teams face each other in the Champions League. UEFA insists that the two boards meet for a swanky lunch beforehand.

The bullshit Marca pumps out is next level.

Imagine a double contract announcement of Virgil and Mo just ahead of City, that would be supreme. Although given Mo's chat last week the latter doesn't feel likely.

As per my previous post, if it's not all three I think it will back fire. On Mo, maybe I'm remembering this wrong, but I'm sure he was super vocal in the final weeks even days before he signed last time. Is there last minute haggling even when they know an agreement is all but done? Or is it tied up weeks in advance of an announcement? Maybe one for @Beamrider

Once the haggling is done, paperwork and announcement is usually done in a day or so, sometimes quicker.
Haggling will go on until the very last minute.

I've probably said it before in here, but honestly, what more could Slot and his have done to confirm to them that the post-Klopp era looks in safe hands? Top of the PL by miles. Top of all teams in the CL, and the first club to advance into the next round. Being spoken about as favourites for the tournaments that matter to top-level professionals as well as just good vibes and culture around the club.

The club ballsed up the delays of the negotiations, but they have since atoned for that by appointing Slot & co, and the start to the reason. Put it this way, I'd rather have waited longer than liked for a new contract on the basis that the new coach and team were top draw than have been offered a new deal in May and meandering around 4th and 5th, with some dodgy signings thrown in, which was entirely possible. If they want to leave then it's got nothing to do with the vision the club can currently sell them. Madrid might offer Trent some more glitz, but we just dicked them with 3 former academy lads playing, they may not even qualify for the CL next round, and gobbling Jude's balls is probably less exciting on a weekly basis. It'll become a jaw chore before long. Put pen to paper!

Is there a possibility Salah ends up at City?

He doesn't seem to want to move to Saudi league, in fact doesn't really want to move at all. Just wants a longer contract at a few hundred thousand a week.
We won't budge, City might

It's possible, but unlikely I'd say. If he went, I'd like it to go like this:

Bumper 4 year contract on 500K a week just as City are relegated to the bottom of the football pyramid.

And destroy his legacy at Liverpool? Not a chance. He doesn't need the money. He wants to be our legend.

Not unless he wants to be playing in the blue vanarama national league earning 500 quid a week.

But as long as Edwards and Hughes are breathing, there is a possibility he could end up back at Chelsea, he could play until he's 40 and still be their best attacker.
