Aidan O' Neill

Gone by "mutual consent". It's the right call. It's very hard to see who we can get though. Ireland is hardly the most attractive proposition at the moment. Personally I'd like Mick McCarthy back. It's probably going to be Martin O' Neill.

Here's Petrov on O'Neill as a manager. It's certainly not an overly-detailed approach:

“Martin’s success was very simple. He told us to go out and win the games for him.

“He would say, ‘Win the game, you rule. Lose the game, I rule’. We always preferred it when we ruled, because it was really bad when he ruled.

“Martin would make us watch videos, he would put on double sessions and didn’t speak to anybody until we won the next game. We didn’t want to see him grumpy but, when we won, everyone was in a good mood and the manager was happy."

Chris Hughton would hardly leave Norwich?

Does anyone think being an international manager is something that can be done part time?

Yes. I think it's always part-time, but most managers try to disguise that, for their own sanity, by filling up the spare time with loads of travel and committee meetings. But it's a part-time job that demands total concentration when you're actually doing it, and that's what stops full-time club managers from being able to do it as well. The problem with international management is it's a part-time job that can't be done by anyone with other commitments. It's made for semi-retired managers.

Maybe Coyle? But I doubt he'd leave for it either.

I don't think anyone will turn this bunch into world beaters. But it would be nice to enjoy watching us play. If we're not going to qaulify for anything, I'd rather we played a half decent brand of football.

That said, I'd be happy to see us qualify with a shit brand of football, I just can't see it happening soon.

The FAIdont have an arse in their trousers. I doubt if they will be able to pay compensation fo a new manager, unless Denis O'Brien stumps up again.

Hughton would be a good call, but I doubt he'd leave Norwich. He's fairly early into his managerial career. I wouldn't fancy Coyle. He didn't do a very good job at Bolton at all.

No offence but you could have Guus Hiddink managing the team, still wouldn't change anything.

Indeed.
But they still should be able to beat the likes of Sweden and Austria.

From a historic perspective definitely, but both Sweden and Austria have better players presently.

Actually I would have said the reverse from a historical perspective though I suppose it depends on how historical you want to go.
I have seen nothing of the Swedish or Austrian players to suggest that they are superior to the current Irish lot

On the theme of proper pronunciation, if one more reporter pronounces Giovanni as 'Gee-oh-vanni' I'm going to hit them with my Bumper Book of Gaelic Names!

Tbf I was expecting Austria to beat Ireland.
They have some young decent players and many of them play reguarly in the Bundesliga.
That Ireland squad is a bit shocking. Dunne and O'Shea? Forde?

You need a revamp of that squad as much as you need a new manager.

'Juh-vanni'. The missus is Italian and she goes ballistic when she hears that stuff!

Ah but is she from northern or southern Italy? I heard a northern Italian guy saying the southern Italians don't know how to speak Italian properly.

The 'i' is there really to tell you it's a soft 'g'. It's 'joe-VA-nni' or 'Juh-VA-nni'. Anyway, that's how I'll pronounce it to avoid getting a smack! 😉
