Yes it is fair to say that there probably are no players waiting who will make an immediate impact in the way McManaman, Fowler or Owen did but Carra wasn't amazing at first. Neither were Thompson, Matteo or Murphy. Even Gerrard didnt took time.

There are those young lads who are clearly ready and then there are others who are almost ready but need some experience and are at least good enough to be squad players.

And if those are not around then why not? We've spent a fortune on young players and youth development yet have seen next to nothing.
