The Summer of Suarez

So, Mancini has jumped on the bandwagon and named him as a person of interest for City - in an interview for the Guardian.

It could happen - a bidding war resulting in 50m+ deal - particularly if Real Madrid get interested.

Not that I'm overly keen on the idea, you'd have to think about it.

This is all pointless what manager would not crave Suarez, we just have to ignore it and hope he has more backbone than Torres

Talking of 'full retard', Mancini has definitely gone it in recent weeks. I think Fergie's mind games have sent him over the edge this season.

We'd be retarded to sell Suarez

But that's not really true though is it?

It's not the selling that's retarded, if someone had offered a large enough sum - it's what you spend the money on that can be retarded.

Not for me. It goes beyond money.

If you consistently sell your top players you become a club devoid of genuine ambition, like what has happened to Arsenal, and so become at best, a stepping stone for players aiming to move on to bigger things or more realistically, get landed with a bunch of above-average Joe's.

Plus, a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, and with elite footballers even more so. Transfers are such a gamble.

Course it's true, I get your point, but selling is wrong because it gives off an impression of the club. What do you think of when you think of Arsenal in that respect?

As I've said earlier, we shouldnt sell him. Ever.
We wont find another striker like him for the sums mentioned.

Both.

We'd be retarded to sell for any money because he's not replaceable. He's up there with the world's bests.

There's fuck all point in worrying about Suarez's future until the summer. Lets just enjoy his performances from now until then.

6 goals in the last 11 games will equal Torres best season in the league.

What a player he is, hope he stays for a long long time.

Considering the teams they were on, and how much people view Torres as a 'supreme finisher' etc, the bold just shows how phenomenal of a season Suarez is having.

Can't see us not selling him for anything oevr 50M but I'd keep regardless of the offer if he was happy to stay.

From his point of view, I can fully understand him leaving. If City or Bayern came in for him, which they will, he would be mad to refuse.

It will be shit, but Suarez deserves to be at a better club than one struggling to qualify for the Europa League.

It might seem like that but maybe he's happy at Liverpool, his family are settled and he feels the Club is going in the right direction?

It's easy for people to say 'Suarez deserves better' and he does but there's much more to it than that.

I may be wrong and have this shoved down my throat, but I think some people underestimate what makes Suarez tick and think he has the same mentality as most players.

Regards

I hope you guys are right, but I wish we could rely on something stronger than ties with the city. As a general rule players move when their club is unable to match their ambition. I can only hope with you guys that Suarez is one of the exceptions to this, but given his winning mentality display ever single match, I would be surprised if that were the case.

Agreed but all players want to win trophies. Suarez more than most. Even Gerrard almost left to pursue this dream. He'll be gone if we don't wni something next year.

A winning mentality is part of it, but there's more to Suarez besides. His interviews make it clear both that he's a tremendously loyal guy and that he appreciates loyalty in his own right. He might well ask himself questions about his future if we don't win something next season, but I don't think it's a done deal that he'd leave, especially not if we finish in the top four and get back into the Champs League.

I have not seen another player in Liverpool for the last 10 years apart from Stevie G (and Torres for a season) who can change games like him. Hoping that he will stay for life, I would not blame him for going if the owners and manager cannot nurture or buy players to create a great squad and that we are not getting anywhere near to challenge for titles for the next year or so.

If he does go, I think we must hold him for a world record fee of no less than 100 million GBP. (I know, I know....)

Who could we sign better than Suarez for 50m?

No one. So fuck it.

The same was said 2/3 years ago re Torres.

The answer is that you find the next Suarez who's available for 20M and then use the other 30M wisely. No one suggested selling Torres for 50M cos there was a better player out there in Suarez, but it turned out to be true.

I'm not saying I want us to sell Suarez btw.

Selling your very best player, the best player in the league in fact, is illogical.

Let's say that we do sell for big cash, we will not be in the position to attract established players of similar quality to Suarez as;

a) they are very few and very far between
b) they will already be at a big club in all likelihood
c) we cannot offer champs league.

Truth is I don't know every player in the world and perhaps there is a player as good as Suarez roaming around right now semi undiscovered but he is that good I really doubt it, he is right up in the top echelon in terms of ability.

Either way our chances of finding him and signing him are next to fucking zero.

So that leaves method 2.

We sell Suarez fully in the knowledge that barring miracles we will not replace him with a player as good, but we spend 30M of his transfer fee on other areas of the pitch. Possibly we could strengthen the squad in this way and possibly it might improve us overall but the old maxim a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush applies, we may well just spunk 10M on player A, 15M on player B etc and end up with a team without any player of genuine top class.

We should do absolutely everything to keep him IMO, it is not a debate.

35 - 40 million is not silly money, especially for Suarez. If Torres could raise us 50 million, I think Suarez is twice the player Torres was when he was sold.

For Suarez 100 million is.

That's true. I'll be interested to see what Falcao goes for, although not sure if he has a release clause for the rumoured 45M.

Either way, 45M is probably where bidding should start.

Can Luis be better next season?

If we get £50 million plus for him can rebuild the team.

Juve did similar when sold zidane and brought Thuram, nedved and buffon

(not advocating a sale but worthy of discussion!)
