So who do you want it to be?

Similar standing? Like, one of the worlds top 3 players?

I've already made clear my thoughts on Sanchez (I really think he could improve into a world class player for the Rodgers treatment and more central free role) in other posts but can see an argument for us signing a ready-made central striker to slot straight in.

Sanchez is similar - definitely.

Perhaps Reus? Twitter says he's best mates with Emre Can (I obviously just made that up ... or did I?)

Could be Balotelli - replace one nutter with another nutter.
 
Sanchez and Rues are the only two I can think of. We need someone of that level to have a realistic chance of champions league this season.
 
I think similar standing means someone equivalent to Suarez when we signed him (in terms of ability and potential), not necessarily someone as good as he is now.

Part of me would love us to sign Balotelli and be the club where he realises his huge potential. But I don't really want another lunatic in the team.
 
I struggle to think of anything worse than Balotelli, similar levels of drama to Suarez but not much of the talent.

Sanchez seems ideal

I don't know if its possible to get a player of similar standing. Also, Reus is hot property right now, all the big sides will be interested. Hardly think its likely.

Got a funny feeling it will be Benzema.
 
There was a rumour going around that Ballotelli was our number 1 target if we sold Suarez.

Can't see it myself. He seems a footballer Rodgers would hate to work with.
 
What are people thoughts on Pastore? After the slap on the wrists from UEFA PSG should be looking to balance the books after splashing out on David Luiz, if they're not ignoring the rules completely that is.
 
I'd rather just get Lukaku + Mertens if Sanchez didn't come. I know Lukaku's been largely shit in the World Cup and I've said so myself, but having seen more of him in the league, I think he's way better than that. His main problems are his first touch and workrate, but then again, he'd cost a lot more if he were the finished article already. So a diamond with flaws isn't a bad thing. He's still only 21 so there's a lot of time for us to polish him, and we've shown last season that we're pretty good in that department. Will Mourinho sell to us? Who knows. He's sold Mata to the Mancs, and I don't think because he's dumb enough to think the wouldn't be a threat in the new season.

As for Mertens, I admit I've only really seen him play in this World Cup, but what I saw, I really liked. He's had a solid debut season at Napoli too, and at 27, is at a good age where he can come in and contribute straight away while still leaving room for Ibe / Teixeira / Suso to get some games for their development. If we spent half of the Suarez money on them and left the rest of it for defenders, it wouldn't be too bad business I think. Of course, those who've seen more of Mertens can chime in and call me a fool for endorsing him and I can't really have any excuse. ;D

If we're looking at PSG I might be more tempted by Lucas Moura. He's still not really a striker though. The seem to be pretty thin on the ground right now.

Maybe there's some young South American we haven't heard about?
 
I would love us to sign Muriel. Despite the injuries and poor season. That lad is the second coming of the Brazilian Ronaldo.

I do. It isn't. Messi and Ronaldo are the only two players generally recognised as being on Suarez' level and we're not going to score either of those. That needn't be a problem IF we make the right signings, but it'll have to be "signings" plural, as we're not going to get that much ability and will to win in a single individual.

Benzema might have been in the frame had Real come in for Suarez. As it is, I don't really see that happening.

He looks amazing in highlight clips, but it's hard to say what the hell's been going on with him the last year.

Might be a bit too much of a gamble.

There is that Rodrigo guy from Benfica we were linked with a few times back in the spring. He does look decent, but nowhere near Suarez quality.
 
Sanchez is really the closest I can think of in terms of output of goals and assists, pace and movement, and indefatigable will to win. Maybe Antoine Griezmann in lieu of Sanchez, but definitely some winger/forward type instead of a pure striker.

Rodgers will probably revert to a lone striker upfront with Suarez moving on, so he may find that three pure strikers in Sturridge, Lambert and Borini supported by a matchwinning winger/forward like Sanchez or Griezmann -- who can also double as a lone striker (false 9) -- will suffice for the time being.
 
We probably have contacted several targets already and the club will have known about this for a while I'm guessing.
Sanchez would be the obvious one to start with, that doesnt look to likely though. But at least we got to talk to his reps yesterday which shows he cant be that against the idea.

Reus would be the perfect addition aswell imho. Rodgers will probably go back to a 4-3-3 more often than not when he doesnt have to accomodate Suarez and Sturride. Getting in Reus as a IF would be fantastic.
40 mill could probably do it if he's interested.

After that I'm not to sure. Muller? Di Maria? Cavani?
 
I know not everyone agrees, and it isn't going to happen, but I'd take Lukaku any day. He's only going to get better, and he's already unplayable on his day. Heir to Drogba is a phrase that shouldn't be used lightly, but I think he's that.
