The search for a new DM

You probably do in all, no “almost” about it. Weird the fantasies people get pleasure from over seeing the club do well. Wonder why some bothered to sign up to SCM in the first place.

I’m half serious.

We will have a sizeable shortfall in our income next season and the £50m raised from selling Hendo & Fabs isn’t likely to stretch very far.

I think it would be a pretty far from ideal outcome, but would it really be the end of the world?

I mean, a DM is essential, but the prices being quoted and our track record suggests the fact we need one doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll get one.

Be a popcorn moment watching the crazies lose their shit, I suppose.
I am wondering the same. Looks like all of the top tier targets - Bellingham, Arthur, Caicedo, Tchouameni are unattainable for various reasons.

At the same time, the promising ones are way overvalued - Lavia, Docoure. But we have gone from needing midfielders to desperate for midfielders. If I was a club owner and LFC approached me for one of the midfielders, I would add an extra amount given how desperate the situation has gotten. The more we wait, the higher the price, as other clubs will need to find replacements. It has also become difficult to ascertain what is value for money in this new Saudi money world.

Having said that we have shed a lot of wages. Also, read somewhere that the payment from Saudi clubs are on favorable terms - as in a big chunk upfront. That should give us some financial muscle to play with.

If we don't sign a replacement then we are a truly unique football club in world football. Big enough to be considered the No.1 or 2 in England, yet fucking cashless and poor. That's a unique combination if there ever was one.

Arthur??? Are we buying that cunt again?

Seriously though, is there still any way we can keep Fabinho for another season? You simply can't replace him for anywhere near the money we're getting in this market. There are lots of promising #8's, but a deficit of true #6's who possess all of the numerous checklist of attributes you need to have to play as a lone DM at the top-club level. This is why Rice cost 110M and why the likes of Rodri, Busquets and Casemiro are indispensable. £40M for Fabinho sounds like a good deal after last season, but it actually probably isn't.

If he’s let Klopp know that at 29/30 he’d rather not back himself in the most competitive league in Europe and prefer to pick up millions playing exhibition football in front of a few thousand in The Lying Rag… then 40m is excellent money for anyone with that mentality.

Not sure it applies here – there are plenty of younger players being tempted to move to Saudi Arabia right now not because they don't back themselves to succeed, but because the money is too irresistible. Plus Brazilians have historically been not fussy about plying their trade in "exotic" leagues – the likes of Hulk or Oscar spent some of their best years in China, lots of top Brazilians went through Shakhtar through the years, etc – it's all fair game to them as long as the money is right.

In short, I don't think by itself his willingness to move away should be considered a black mark against him. The big question is whether Klopp still trusts him after last season... A fair question to ask, but I'm just not sure we're not shooting ourselves in the foot if we can't adequately replace him.

Luiz is not good enough for the DM role for us, I bet Villa would bite our hands for 50m and that would say it all.

Andre

But would they bite our hand off for 35m?

No chance, Villa are building and not going to sell him unless I would imagine they get a big offer that will help them fund a better DM as replacement. They aren’t desperate for a DM but we are.

Mbappe left out of PSG preseason tour

So if Mbappe is actually going to Madrid are we working on one of their midfielders?

What are you assuming the budget is after sales? FSG has to find away to finance the 3 further acquisitions we need to stay competitive, because the fans will really turn on FSG like Manu fans turned on the Glazers

£35m like every other year.

Spent - £95m of Mac A & Slobbers

Received - about £65m for Fabs, Hendo, Nat, Clarkson and various loans.

That’s £5m in the kitty.

Pity we can’t get Arthur on loan again.

I think Stevie is right - I almost want us to sign no one, and maybe sell one or two more, just to enjoy the meltdown on here

This.

Chuck in re-signing Ox at the last minute for shits and giggles and I’ll decant a nice red as well…

Start a new thread predicting next year's top 4 so I can't put us in it. That's where it's going. There's no fucking chance.

Don’t worry - there’ll be at least 2 that’ll have us in the relegation zone if we don’t sign at least 6 more players.

Douglas Luiz and Gravenberch covers the Brazilian and Dutch quota. Gravenberch might be available for a loan

Martin Zubimendi is being mentioned alot in twitter. Available for £35m, what's anyone's thought?
Pretty good actually, other than not knowing the fucking first clue about him…has a pretty cool name though. Longed for the days we had a player who we could nickname “Zoo-bee”

I think he talking shit like he usually does and offers fuck all in terms of views etc. We are being so cool about a replacement for Fab, that I think the club has already someone lined up and ready, plus Lavia will still be bought in.

Doesnt he have a 53 mill release clause? He has already snubbed Arsenal and Barca to stay with Sociedad, and now they are in the CL. I doubt he’ll want to leave.
Not sure if he is the right fit either.

My thoughts would be - who the fuck is he?
Don't know much about him other than what Twitter says... I've seen one youtube highlight, just a tidy, nothing special MF from that clip. No way near to Bosquets levels.. He looks to be a better version of that player that went from us to Lazio

How upset will you be when we don’t sign him?

We need 2 MFs and a CB with Nat leaving, we get them, I am not complaining. So who ever Klopp signs, the likelihood is he will be decent to very good. Now he has said he wishes to make amends for last season, so as long as FSG make the budget available he will get the players he needs, we will be challenging again.

Our first league game is in exactly 3 weeks.
Which means that we have to get a new midfielder up to speed pretty quickly and that's not happening imo.
With Bajectic and Thiago out and the death of Szobo, I have a strong feeling that we'll be seeing Trent start in midfield and Gomez at RB.

Away at Chelsea...
