The Manager

There seems to be a bit of talk that De Boer has been lined up to take over, then. Anyone heard anything about this?

He's been linked before but I thought he'd turned the idea down. Could be a good choice if a change were to be made IMO, but I can't see him agreeing to work under a DOF.

Much more emphasis needs to be placed on how the football side of the club is run. There's next to no experience there from Ayre downwards. We've got a transfer committee to identify players but who the hell knows if they all value the same attributes? There needs to be strong direction from that side of things and there isn't, partly because as a club we want to believe in the cult of the manager. We look back at iconic figures such as Paisley et al, but forget the fact that they had the support of Peter Robinson. There's nothing there above the manager - FSG, who seem to still be trying to figure out how football works, given they propose and jettison management structures on whims, Ian Ayre, who seems to think being MD of Liverpool is like wearing a Blue Peter badge. We allow players to in effect become bigger than the club and we allow managers to come in and completely rip up what has come before.

It's nonsense. Until FSG figure out what the hell they're doing, it's not going to matter who is in charge. We'll be stuck with a succession of bright young managers who flog half the squad, sign a load of dross and by the time they leave pretty much mandate the next person to have to do the same.

I agree with everything you say about FSG. They've been almost unbelievably incompetent and half-arsed with the footballing side of things. To the extent that I'd think they didn't give a toss if they didn't keep throwing money at the club.

Letting Rodgers dictate to them back when he joined was always likely to be a problem at some point. We had a plan, Rodgers didn't like it, so then it's just kind of 'ah fuck it. Whatever man.' I can't fathom it. It's like we've got Jeffrey Lebowski in charge of things.

He's this generation's Kevin Keegan. Without the illustrious playing career.

I'm not too keen on Klopp. He seems to be a great guy but would be really wary of taking a guy who has been so emotionally invested in a club / project... particularly if he's leaving on a low (not that I think he will, he'll want to turn things around there).

I want someone who is quite measured and got a really good reputation in the game. De Boer seems to fit the bill. I'd completely forgotten about Blanc till Ryan mentioned him the other day - could be a good option?

De Boer said a couple of months ago that he could see himself as a manager of a club like Liverpool.

He'd be my choice

It has been alleged that following Liverpool’s disastrous 3-1 defeat away to Crystal Palace last month, skipper Steven Gerrard and centre-back Dejan Lovren were involved in a huge post-match bust-up.

Liverpool conceded two late goals in their clash with Palace at Selhurst Park towards the end of November; Joe Ledley capitalised on some slack defending to give the Eagles the lead with 12 minutes of normal time remaining, followed by a stunning free-kick from club captain Mile Jedinak three minutes later to secure the win.

Jamie Carragher believes Dejan Lovren has made Liverpool’s defence worse

According reports, both Gerrard and Lovren blamed each other for the collapse in the dressing-room after the game. The former England captain sat in front of the back four that afternoon, and Lovren reportedly blamed his skipper for not giving him enough cover at the back

The newspaper alleges that Reds boss Brendan Rodgers backed his captain, and, as a result dropped the Croatian international for the next four games.

Lovren, who moved to Anfield in the summer for £20m from Southampton, is believed to be struggling due to the language barrier between himself and his two Spanish full-backs Alberto Moreno and Javier Manquillo. Both Moreno and Manquillo reportedly communicate with each other and Rodgers in their mother-tongue.

Both Gerrard and Lovren started today’s defeat at Manchester United, with the latter making yet another defensive error that led to United’s third goal.

That result leaves them in 10th place with 21 points from their 16 games. They are seven points adrift of the top four, and 10 points behind United in third place.

If true it highlights the Rodgers - Gerrard connection. Lovren has been bad, but he's right aswell. If this is true.

I hate everything about Lovren.
He's a fucking plank.
Arrogant cunt who can't even back up his shite talk.
Fucking loves himself beyond belief too.
I don't think I've actually ever despised a player so soon into his Liverpool career but I really hate this cunt.

I dont. I think he's a good player and I hope he comes good.
We've spent an awful lot of money on him and Sakho. We need them to step up.

He's right about Gerrard though, but that said, Gerrard isn't responsible for Lovren's collection of fuck ups, and there's loads.

I was shocked we signed him after the shit he pulled at Southampton in order to force the move. Unprofessional. The upside of this if it is true is that it will hasten his departure. Otherwise he'd be one of those guys we'd be stuck with for several years.

Yep.
Putting up quotes on twitter like some 14 year old girl.
He lives on Instagram too.
He's a twat.

The ease with which Lovren gets repeatedly turned by attackers is beyond belief. It's like he has a chronic balance problem / inner ear infection.

Lovren actually thinks he's leader too a self proclaimed one anyway.
He can't even hold his own position on the pitch so I can't see how he has the right to be shouting around and pointing at other people.

Lovren's awful, but it doesn't help that Gerrard is a captain who appears disinclined to sign a new contract. He needs to make up his mind whether he's in for the fight or off elsewhere, because you can't have a half-hearted captain demanding more commitment from the others. The whole thing is a shambles.

Gerrard's actually as fickle as we are. This is him last March. What a difference a few months make.

Steven Gerrard has called on Liverpool's owners to award Brendan Rodgers a new contract "as soon as possible" in recognition of the stunning transformation he has overseen at Anfield.

Rodgers has taken Liverpool from seventh in the Premier League last season into contention for a first title since 1990 but he is approaching the final 12 months of his contract without talks opening over an extension. The 41-year-old signed a three-year deal when he replaced Kenny Dalglish as Liverpool manager in 2012and the club's owners, Fenway Sports Group, have an option for an extra year on the same terms. FSG must inform Rodgers by a specified date next season whether they intend to exercise the option but a new, improved deal is expected to be signed before that stage.

The Liverpool manager is prepared to delay contract negotiations until the summer rather than invite distractions to his team's title challenge, a pursuit enhanced by Sunday's comprehensive 3-0 defeat of Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, Gerrard has voiced surprise at the absence of a offer to Rodgers, described by the Liverpool captain as the finest man-manager he has encountered in football. The 33-year-old said: "I have been absolutely blown away by his sessions, his tactics and his maturity in the job and I am learning off him every single day.

"When you become an older player you look to see how the manager does certain things and he has been fantastic for myself personally. I am sure the rest of the players would echo what I am saying. I am absolutely delighted he is here and I just hope that there is a lot of movement now in Boston [home to FSG] because they have got to get him signed up as soon as possible."

Gerrard, who scored twice at Old Trafford, added: "When players are in this situation with a year to go and you want to keep hold of them so desperately, then the club reacts really quickly and gets it sorted. For me, I think he deserves a very long contract here and he is perfect for this club."

From cheerleader to head scratcher. He made the same switch with Rafa, but at least that took a year or two more.

Gerrard's head scratching has tended to come at the same time as it's done for the rest of us, so it's always been easy to understand where he's coming from - for example, I think most fans were pulling the same face as him when Rafa hooked Torres in that game. I guess the difference now is that it's a lot harder to absolve him of responsibility because his individual capabilities / performances no longer justify it.

I guess the reason I still hesitate to criticize him is that generally speaking this implied loss of faith in the manager has always ended up being justified, hasn't it? It's not right for the captain to put it out there, I agree, but regardless it was always going to end up the same way, right?

Probably, but it certainly becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy when he gets in this mood. And to do so when he can't even be arsed to commit himself pisses me off no end.

I always felt in the past that he'd earned the right to throw a bit of a strop given that he was often playing out of his skin and to an extent keeping the manager in a job anyways. Not really ideal but perhaps the price you pay for keeping a world class talent in an underperforming team.

These days it is annoying because he's just as culpable as anyone else - same goes for the yelling at players.
