The January transfer window rumours thread

I defended Carroll quite vigorously a couple of months back, and I would continue defend him if he put himself about a bit more and showed a bit more hunger. But he doesn't look like he has the right mentality. I haven't lost all hope yet, though.

Downing looks busy and has nice touches and the odd nice pass, but actually offers fuck all. I didn't want us to sign him at the time, I was hoping I was missing something with him when we were linked this summer. But I don't think I was.

I'm also a bit "meh" on Adam.

I suspect the answer might be that good young players who show a good attitude, good touch, vision, intelligence, passing ability etc. can turn into great players if they get 'game time'. But big lumbering shithouses who are shit trainers, make crap poorly timed runs and can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo are less likely to turn into great players just because you keep playing them.

I actually think Carroll will be ok though, never worth 35m though bov.

Downing has been the worst signing of Kenny's lot.

Our worst big money signing since Aquilani.
Aquilani had scored 2 goals and got 5 assists in the few games he had for Liverpool.
Downing wont get that in his entire career here.

By the way, I know I come back to this regularly but on the 25th August (5 days before the transfer window closed) we had the options of playing this team tonight.

Reina
Enrique
Agger
Skrtel
Johnson

Gerrard
Aquilani

Maxi
Meireles
Cole

Carroll.

Henderwank, Spearing, Adam, Downing no where to be seen.

Comolli is a plank.

Representatives of Fernando Torres will be honored guests of the "Liverpool" tomorrow during the game against "Manchester City".

According to still unconfirmed, but reliable information from one of my sources, the deal for the Spanish striker can be accomplished before the next home games of the season which is on January 14 against the "Stoke".

The deal is expected to be worth between 20 and 25 million pounds, most likely the payment will be divided into several parts.

Darren Bent remains a plan "B" for "Liverpool" if negotiations fail Torres.

Ha, where'd you see/hear that one Shadey?

You say that but if we'd played that team, we'd probably have got trounced 5-0, and everyone would be bemoaning Kenny for being so tactically naive. The fact is, they have better players than us, and ones that are far more accomplished in front of goal.

I thought we gave a decent account of ourselves, but were ultimately outclassed. Plus Kompany was imperious.

Although I obviously agree that some of our big money transfers have been disastrous.
I refuse to believe that replacing the ineffective Kuyt, the useless Downing, the rubbish Adam and the mediocre Henderson with Gerrard, Aquilani, Cole and Meireles would have made us any worse.

Honestly what the f*ck are people on about regarding Downing ? - I feel he is being victimized a little too much when clearly in the first half he was our only proper outlet to create something. In my view he has been good since we bought him and always makes the runs and gets past players - the problem everyone is that we have no proper striker in our side that can score regularly - thats the issue we have - today just highlighted for me that Andy Carrol is a MASSIVE failure and I think Alan Green summed it up on the radio - 'A big lump' and that is exactly what he is. We wasted that money on nothing and now we have to live with it - I would not think he is worth £2M such is the lack of skill, goal-scoring ability he has - a shocking buy.

As for today's game - I think our manager was visibly dissapointed in his BBC interview today - and summed it up by saying 'you have to be clinical' - which we are not. The sad truth is - we are as a team playing well upto the final third and some good football - and have done all season bar the game against Spurs. We cannot expect to win games without a proven goal-scorer in our ranks, who is a full time striker.

MORON

Behave (moron, not themn)

Henderson passed in a beauty to Downing who mongs up the easiest of shots straight at hart. He could have chipped it, rounded the keeper or something but no, he was shit.

We're probably gonna sign ANOTHER overpaid, overrated stinker of a striker (or any other player) who can't score to save his life. OR some 'big-name' player that will make you laugh and cry tears of bewilderment and sorrow e.g. Jelavic, etc.

In fact, I'm willing to bet my house on it.

Mark my words.

Comolli and Kenny are totally clueless when it comes to transfers. FACT.

Downing for 19 million is the worst piece of business I've ever seen.

And I remember the plane crashers signing veron for 30 mil.

Fucking horrendous.

Look at Jenny's signings. How many have worked out. Enrique? Defo. Adam? Maybe.

The rest. Shite.

Suarez was signed before he came by the way. Thank Roy for him.
Maybe Kenny is doing all this to make us all think Rafa was a transfer genius in order to pave the way for him to come back.
Who's worse Keane 30m, Aquilani 20m, Henderson 17m, Downing 20m, Carroll 35m, Cisse 12m........fuck me we are dismal.

Carroll may improve a bit. Adam too. Downing, however, looks like the biggest flop in our history. The difference between how effective he is and how effective he should be for $20m is so large that it seems impossible for him to traverse the distance without resort to supernatural aid like a broomstick or magic carpet.
shoving a broomstick covered in psychoactive drugs up downings arse might actually work.

It's fucking horrible Andy.

Stewart downs boy is horrible and the worst thing about it is, everyone knew it before we bought him. Who was the best player at villa last year? Ashley young.

So we couldn't get him so we went and got his mongy white twin instead. Its like that family guy episode where stewey creates the clone mongy stewey. We got that one instead. He's fucking shit and to think we spent 19 million on mongy stewey is unbelievable.

At least mongy stewey was a laugh.

Downing was poor tonight. He takes far too many touches of the ball - usually from foot, to foot, to foot, giving their defence time to settle, or to pass the ball safely back to his fullback.

He's incredibly average.

He's been poor since he arrived, IMO, but I've seen enough of him to know that he is capable of better. They are always on the TV back home and I've seen Villa live a fair bit.

I'd never have signed him for 20M mind.
This foot to foot thing is angry facing me.
A lot.

'IM SUPER STUUUUU...is it on my left foot...weeeeeeeee.... is it on my right foot........i can use both feet......you dont know what im going to do......im super Stuuuuuuuuu.........'

*passes back to Enrique who lobs a hopeful ball into the box where the opposition defence has now had time to mass and organise*

*looks dejected*

*sprints back into own half*

*recieves pass with acres of space to run into and no defender facing him meaning he can whip an early ball in behind the defence....*

'IM SUPER STUUUUU...is it on my left foot...weeeeeeeee.... is it on my right foot........i can use both feet......you dont know what im going to do......im super Stuuuuuuuuu.........

*passes back to Enrique......

HES A FUCKING COWARD AND A JOKE.

Haha that's such an accurate analysis it's not even funny. But it still kinda is.

I don't think Downing is a coward though. He tries sometimes to take players on but fails. He's just not very good at it.

It annoys me that both Enrique and Downing wear orange boots because it makes it easier to confuse them and when I see a dark haired player wearing orange boots sprinting down the left wing, I'm hopeful he'll be able to beat the opposition fullback... that is... unless it becomes apparent that the player is Downing. That shit ain't right.

the sad thing about stu is there is no buzz of excitement when he picks up the ball because you *know* he'll do fuck all with it. half the season gone and no goals or assists, I'm half convinced you could stick agger on the right flank and he would improve of that pitiful stat.

Super Stu ? I'd rather Super Ted !

And while we're at it we could swap Carroll for Spotty .

Look at the two of them here , working together much better than our heros Super Stu and Big Andy

I think the problem with Downing is that he doesn't really believe he's good enough to be here. I was watching an interview with Gareth Southgate (bare with me here) just after we'd signed him and he said he was an excellent player but that there were issues surrounding his self-belief. Now, Southgate was obviously a bit of a disaster as a manager, but everything he says rings true watching Downing play. Now he's at a club where the expectations are higher, rather than taking the bull by the horns, he's retreating into himself. There is an air of uncertainty and hesitance in his play, which looks to me like self-doubt.

I think if Downing played like he has for the last couple of seasons at relatively average teams, he'd be getting less stick. That's largely because he's an accomplished footballer. I'm not saying he's good enough for Liverpool, or that he'll ever justify a £20m price tag, but I think he has more ability than he's showing. The real question is whether he can ever find the confidence to get the best out of himself at a club with real ambition. The early signs aren't good, but I'd give him until the end of the season to see if he can adjust before I gave up on him.
