The grass is too dry!

In the post-Leicester press-conference, Klopp has mentioned the grass getting progressively drier as a big factor in our players losing some of the crispness in passing and also in the lead-up to Alisson's mistake. There are a few questions to consider here:
  1. The emphasis on this will surely invite derision from opposition fans (and some of our own); so before any knee-jerk reactions we need to ask a basic question first – is it actually true? Perhaps those of you who play the game regularly can share your own experiences, but from everything I know – yes, it is a factor. The ball gets "stuck," the bounce becomes harder and as a result teams that play quick-fire passing game like ourselves are at a disadvantage.
  2. Even though it's true, is it smart for Klopp to say it? Will it lead to opponents keeping their grass dry on purpose when playing against us? Perhaps it might; but on the other hand it seems the opposition has caught on to this for some time already – those teams that are willing to use figuratively "scorched earth" tactics will probably use them anyway, regardless of whether Klopp mentions it or not.
  3. Finally, how should the team handle it better? Klopp said at the press-conference that they should have played more balls in behind and also avoided risky passes to the goalkeeper, in other words they should have simplified the game. I think some players did try to do that – VVD seemed unusually willing to clear the ball anywhere after a few of his passes went astray and near the end of the game you could see our players trying to dribble the ball out and win a foul or a throw-in instead of trying the kind of intricate passing combinations of the first 20 minutes (when the pitch was still wet). Shaqiri made a difference because he was willing to fight for these clearances and also run with the ball. Henderson, on the contrary, couldn't deal with it – I thought his passing was actually crisp and quick in the first 25 minutes, but after that he didn't really know what to do.

What was interesting was that the Japanese commentators (who normally aren’t interesting) suggested during the game that the grass might have been kept longer for this game. This was due to them seeing
a) the ball bobble around a lot
b)the ball seemed quite slow on the surface
c) close up shots of the ground suggested as much and
d) the LFC players were getting a ridiculous amount of low passes intercepted.

So it was interesting to hear what Klopp said after the game.
We simply need to get better in all aspects of our game to be able to adapt to any of those kinds of tactics though. Nice learning curve.

Its bollocks. Leicester play a slick quick passing game same as us. In fact they seem fine.
Hes just deflecting a shite performance.
150k a week professionals can play on a dryer pitch

Alternatively the PL should state the length of the grass (e.g. 3cm to 10cms or whatever it is) and clarify when and how the pitch should be watered and by how much. It's not rocket science.

I'm sure all clubs manipulate the pitch to their preference or to counter the opposition but there should be (probably are) boundaries .... if these exist and Leicester were within them then there is no discussion to be had and we should just get on with it.

It makes a difference if you know it's going to happen and have prepared for it. Premier League pitches are usually watered like mad - look what happens when a lower league striker naively tries to copy the knee slide celebration, they end up jarring their knees as they fall head over heels on the drier surface! - so it would be a surprise if this one wasn't. But it wasn't a big factor in why we played that poorly. We lacked energy (why the heck is that???), we lacked intelligence and we lacked invention. This needs to be a wake up call, otherwise this good, somewhat fortunate, start will all be for naught.

Just heard his interview. He didn't blame dry grass, he just stressed we didn't adapt to it as we should.

It was not a moan, though I don't doubt folks will interpret it that way.

Steady .... not all of them on 150K - some only on between 70K-100K a week- you can't expect them to play on such a surface.

What is a moan is people being unhappy that despite being top of the league with four wins out of four people are unhappy we conceded a stupid goal and we haven’t smashed anyone yet.

That’s moaning.

We are not bang in tune yet and our passing in the last two games has been sloppy but...

Twelve fucking points.

I wish he'd moan about more things when we win tbh.

The non watering of the pitch has happened for ages, as has over watering it too (Mourinho has drenched an already very wet pitch before to stop us playing quick passes) & we've had some shitty referees.

If you have a moan when you've won it can't come across as being bitter & means you have more of an argument when the same thing happens later in the season & you don't win.
