I thought Defoe gave us an edge, and it'd be shit on him if he were dropped.

was pretty anonymous apart from the goal, yeah yeah the goal won the game but we'll get punished against a better side, so can't afford to carry a goal hanger. gerrard behind rooney with gerrard dropping deeper when we don't have the ball. flood the midfield and disrupt germany's passing.

I'd definitely play Milner on the right to help Johnson out as Germanys movement out wide is very good. The big question is whether we do the same out on the left. If Gerrard plays there, he'll have to remain very disciplined and I'm not so sure that's a good thing. I've been far from convinced by Barry (who just looks incredibly ordinary) and Lampard in the middle anyways.

Rooney has been pretty crap so far, so I'm not so sure playing him up front on his own is going to be a good idea either. Unless he and Gerrard really click and get good service from the midfield, we're potentially in a situation where we can't get anything to stick up front.

Tough choices. I reckon Capello will persist with 4-4-2 and recall Heskey and Carra into the side.

Id play the exact same team and line up as today but if Rooney doesnt recover id play crouch and defoe up top.

the germans would definately look to exploit our left hand side as gerrard will drift into the midde.

I'd expect England to play counterattacking football against Germany. Ghana got in behind their defence quite often, as did Serbia, so we need pace and good movement up front, with solidity in midfield and defence. Defoe is a must, and personally I'd consider Lennon too.

James

Magic - Carra - Terry - A. Cole

Lennon - Barry - Gerrard - Milner

Rooney - Defoe

It won't happen, obv, but that's who I'd pick.

England could do a lot worse than to stick someone on Ozil but who in the squad is able to do a job like that? I expect to see SWP or Lennon back on the right in an attempt to peg Lahm back. I'd stick five in midfield and one up front to stop the germans pissing their way through and getting to Terry and Carragher (who I expect to play). England need to score first.
I dont give a fuck what Germany do.
We've played 3 games, that was our best and most balanced performance (and contrary to what you think Gerrard was pretty disciplined) and we should look to build on that.
Lennon has looked shite, ditto Heskey. Rooney looks injured or something and definately not capable of leading the line alone.
SOoo yeah. Same team. Go again.

It'll probably be be same line up and rightfully so.

Only possible change would be Carra for Upson.

Lot of players were great today. Milner, Terry and Cole in particular.

I disagree. I think Germany are a more mobile and technically gifted team with better passers through almost the whole team. I don't think England can ignore their opponents' strengths. If I were Capello I'd basically defend in depth and try to hit them on the break with Rooney, Gerrard and maybe Lennon (on the left).

100% agree but worried about lennon being totally headless

If everyone's fit he'll play the team that played today.

End of thread.
^ And rightly so. The whole team performed individually and as a cohesive unit. He won't fuck with that.

I'd play the same again except shifting Stevie in behind Rooney and Cole on the left.

Defoe and Lennon as impact subs after 65 mins.
They were cohesive against Slovenia. Capello won't have to fuck with that Oncy, Germany will.
Maybe. But ghana carved them apart time and again first half. We can do that.

Maybe you're right. I'm cautious by nature. Desperate to see an England V Argentina QF.

So the same again except with different players and a different formation.
We were so poor against Algeria that I was convinced we were out today, so every game is now a bonus for me.
I just want us to go out now and impose OUR game on them.

That was the "except" bit Gene.

Largely the same formation bar Gerrard playing deeper than Defoe - a kind of 4-4-1-1.

Its a very young and inexperienced German side.

I cant see England having too many problems against them
Agreed.

England are coming good at the right time too

why not play Milner on the left and Gerrard on the right?

I'm sure Milner's played there quite a bit in his career. I think he's even played LB a few times for Villa.

I thought he played well, I was quite surprised, he reminded me of our Carra and he made some great interventions.
