Suso

Why is this such a shame?

He's 21, been through what - 4 different managers?

This year's Pacheco.

He seems to have a lot more talent than Pacheco. Suso had a decent loan spell at Almeria too.

He will be 22 this year, and been with us for nearly 5 years.

What's he done in that time?

Oh I don't care enough to make a case for him but it is a pity his potential didn't materialise here with us.

I think his potential very much materialized, but BR refused to use him unless forced to. He very much deserved significantly more first team minutes and opportunities than he received the last several years with us.

For a coach who always boasts of how committed he is to working with young players and helping them to realise their potential, I think he needs to explain himself. If you're winning titles every year you can excuse this sort of waste. Not where we are you can't.

Well, think about it like this - he's done enough to secure a move to Milan and probably had a fair few other offers to weigh up. Dani Pacheco ended up at some minnows in Segunda.

I can appreciate that on paper there is an element of meh to the whole thing but having followed his progress during his time here it's hard to understand why he was overlooked when others have been given a chance. Perhaps there is an attitude problem or something else going on but the guy is seriously talented.

It seems likely to me that there is a lack of work ethic or application on Suso's part. He hasn't been given a sniff by a manager who has shown he is prepared to give youth a chance. I do hope this doesn't go all Pogba on us, but I'm prepared to give Rodgers the benefit of the doubt on this one,

Ryan isn't trolling. He just isn't too bothered that Suso is leaving.

Well a bit of that, and a large soupcon of bewilderment at why so many are upset over this.

Seriously like, what's he done to merit this anguish?

If you're on your way to 22, and been at a club for 5 years and through 4 different managers and can't even make the bench, then you;re clearly not good enough.

What am I missing?

There might be an attitude problem. Read somewhere we werent happy with how he conducted himself while away on loan last season. If true, it might be the reason we havent done more to renew his contract.

Shame as there seem to be some potential there.

Sounds like we need to get off our high horse to me.

You're missing the unquestionable fact that forum posters have a better idea of how much Suso would add to the team than the manager and coaching staff who work with him on a daily basis and see him in training when he is here, and follow his progress closely when he is on loan

Well that... or people who have followed his progress from the youth teams and actually know a bit more than others are asking reasonable questions and saying it's a shame how things have turned out on this front. No "anguish" and no need for the snide remarks either.

Quite. He's a good player who has done well when he has featured. Remember him putting in match changing performances against Chelsea and Everton when shifted to a central role? His contribution in preseason was about as good as anyone's, yet he didn't get a look in beyond that. This all feels a bit like one of those situations where the manager has made his mind up on a player ages ago, be it for attitude reasons or whatever, it seems like a waste of a player with an enormous amount of talent and I'll wager he'll do well with Milan.

Well said.

Suso didn't sign a contract so there isn't much we could have done to protect his value. He didn't feature too much for us so I doubt he would have believed he was integral to our future plans. Hence, his reluctance to sign a contract.

I wonder what fee the tribunal will set for him.

Relax - wasn't meant to be snide, just a bit tongue in cheek. Apologies if taken that way.

Ultimately I just think he's a player who's got a lot of very good attributes and a lot of very poor ones, and unfortunately for him he just doesn't have them in the right combination to look like a convincing PL player. I could never really figure out where he would actually fit into the team.

I still think it's a mess that we'll get next to no fee for him, though.

It will be a ratio of his salary, and it won't be anywhere near 5:1. That means we'd have ended up paying far more in wages + coaching resources for him than we get back in return. It is really quite amazing how incompetent we continue to be.

He may well have been able to develop his positives much further, had he played more often for us.
Obviously in the short term, and maybe long term, Coutinho would be chosen ahead of him to play the majority of the time, but I can't help but wonder how our games might have gone had Suso come in place of Coutinho when he was having one of his inevitable, can't pass can't shoot and can't defend patches in form.
