The UEFA European U-19 Championship is in full swing and with the Spanish cruising through to the semi-finals, one name that's being talked about is Liverpool's youngster Suso. With his displays catching the attention of Brendan Rodgers, talkSPORT's Talent Spotter has more on the promising attacker...
Name: Jesus 'Suso' Fernandez Saez
Position: Midfielder
Club: Liverpool
Date of birth: 19 November 1993
Birthplace: Algeciras, Cadiz, Spain
International appearances: Member of Spain U-19 squad
NEED TO KNOW
Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez marked out Suso as one to watch in the future before this summer's tournament and despite previously being a relative unknown in Spain, the midfielder's name is now everywhere after performing brilliantly at the European Under-19 Championship. If his form continues, don't be surprised to see him become part of new Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' first team squad at some stage next season.
FIVE FACTS
1) Suso started his career at the youth ranks of Spanish side Cadiz CF. At Cadiz he was described as having exceptional crossing, passing and dribbling skills.
2) Suso's directness, eye for a pass and trickery have led to (potentially premature) comparisons with Barcelona stars Iniesta and Cesc Fabregas.
3) Suso does have a legitimate link with Barcelona however. Liverpool's Academy Technical Manager Pep Segura oversaw Suso's move to Merseyside from Spain in 2010. Segura had previously worked as a youth coach and scout at Barcelona's famed 'La Masia' school.
4) Suso rejected offers from Real Madrid, Barcelona and Villarreal to complete his move to England.
5) The midfielder is yet to make his official debut for Liverpool's first team, though he did take part in Jamie Carragher's testimonial, as well as a pre-season friendly against Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2010.
He says
“I hope I get some minutes and a chance to show what I can do under Brendan Rodgers. I'm really happy at the club and I want to stay.”
They say
“Keep your eye on Suso, the Liverpool player who will now be playing for Spain Under-19s at their European championship. I tell you, he has promise!” Former Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez
“He's a boy I've really heard enough about in terms of his talent. Hopefully I find that working with him in terms of his mentality will be strong and if he does then he'll have a chance.” Brendan Rodgers
