Suso vs Europe

He should've been given a chance last season.
That said, his time is now.

Kenny could have picked any eleven of us and we would've done a better job. Those Premier League games at the tail end of the season were a great opportunity to blood a few young guns in competitive matches as the Champions League rapidly evaded us. Yet Maxi, Kuyt, Aurelio, Doni and Carragher got the game time and now the first three have departed the club. Shelvey is the only youngster you could say was brought into the first-team in those final 5 or 6 matches.

He mentions his disappointment in not getting a chance last season in the end of that interview.
Hence my comment.
But yeah, Kenny should have let some of the reserve players get some time on the pitch.
Unless he didn't rate them.

I'm agreeing with you here, i'm just pointing out a few players who have left the club or don't really have a playing future that blocked the pathway for a number of young boys to get some minutes and experience in the first team to prevent them becoming 'a little bit sad'.

The good news for Suso is that Mr R doesn't believe that a midfielder needs to be a huge powerful imposing specimen. He won't see Suso's physique as a problem.

TBF i don't think Rafa, Woy or Kenny would have seen that as a problem either.

I mean just look at the game time Lucas and Jay got.

Both are way more sturdy and resilient than Suso, who jumps about three feet in the air when he anticipates physical contact.

That simply isn't true Del. I've been surprised how well he gets up after meaty challenges at reserve level where opponents often test him in this way. He takes the tackle well, indeed, he invites it to get fouls in tight positions where there is nothing on.

I agree, but even if it were true, I'd still find it a bit depressing to see people focus on a lack of grit in the most naturally gifted young player we've had since, well, who? Possibly ever. I know Del could just respond that he's just thinking pragmatically given the nature of the PL, but still.

We get the football we deserve in this country.

Have you ever seen him put a foot in? I'm not denying his quality, or saying he shouldn't play because of it, but comparing him to Lucas or Spearing is folly. Both are very tenacious, and do not shy away from a tackle. Admittedly, I've probably not seen Suso as much as you have, but from what I've seen, he shits out of tackles as a matter of course.

He'll learn, but some players will just never be that tenacious, we've had enough grit and sturdiness in the side over the years, and we still have, sometimes you have to just compromise yourself a bit to strike the balance. I'd love to see him in the side.

You're right Del, but we have far more gritty players than we do talented ones.
I'll take Suso's talent than a Spearing's grit every time.
As for the not-so-talented-but-shits-out-of-tackles Downing, that's a different story.

It reminds me of an interview with with Xabi a while ago, where he said he was shocked just how many of our youngsters would cite tackling as one of their best attributes. He was like, 'tackling?!?! Wtf has that got to do with football?!' The idea that a young player would take pride in such a skill seemed completely alien to him.

Yet he's a good tackler.
I guess people can learn to tackle at a later age.
Reading the game, keeping your head up, awareness, etc is key when you're young.

He got red carded against Man U for a pretty stupid challenge I think.

Then you haven't seen him much at all, because he doesn't.

He mightn't launch himself into flying tackles all the time, but then, neither do Iniesta or Xavi, who still manage to harry opponents without doing so.

That is sexy sexy football ! Sod winning I want to see our team play like that - promote Jesus Joaquin Fernandez Saez de La Torre's to a starting position now !

😉

People seem to get the impression that I'm trying to knock the kid, but I'm really not. I think it's par for the course that lightweight, continental players duck out of the odd challenge. He has plenty about his game to overlook that. I'm simply saying that comparing him (physically) to Lucas and Spearing is daft. They are ball-winners - he, quite simply, is not.

Doesn't Barca and the entire Spanish team except Xabi and the defenders duck out of challenges?
The days of being hard as nails in order to make it are over.

You're losing sight of the lads age Delinquent. He is some playermaker with the ball. Playing him on the right improved his game. Tackling is par for the course in football and thats something he can do. Ball winning is an altogether different story.

I think you need to go back and read what I actually said, Roland.
