Liverpool's Suso close to agreeing new contract at Anfield

• 18-year-old happy with life under Brendan Rodgers
• Pepe Reina not wary of being in manager's envelopes
The Liverpool midfielder Suso has told supporters that he is close to signing a new contract with the club, allaying fears that he would return to Spain when his current deal runs out. The Spaniard has one year left to run on his contract at Anfield but he insisted: "The fans can relax. Everything's fine. I hope to sign the contract as soon as possible."

In an interview with the Spanish radio station Onda Cero, the 18-year-old explained that while Rafael Benítez was instrumental in bringing him to Merseyside, his departure has not had the negative impact that he feared and that talks over a new deal have been positive.

He said: "We have been talking about a [new] contract since the start of the season. We're nearly there: we'll sign soon. I'm happy here, very comfortable. This is the ideal club for me in every sense. This is like a dream for me."

Suso continued: "Rafa [Benítez] was the one that called me and convinced me to go to Liverpool when I was at Cádiz but soon after he left. The truth is, I thought that might be a problem and that things might get worse. But Roy Hodgson came in and he was the opposite of what I feared: he called me up to train with the first team, I travelled with them and was included in the squad at times. It is true that I felt a bit of a change with Kenny Dalglish but in general the departure of Rafa wasn't the problem that I thought it might be.

"Brendan Rodgers is a coach that if you prove to him that you can perform, if you work hard, has no problem in putting young players in the team. I have started three times and things are going well. It's a gift for me. I'm very happy here, very comfortable."

Pepe Reina, meanwhile, insisted that he does not fear being one of the names included in Rodgers's famous envelopes and has welcomed the change in style under the new manager. The TV documentary Being: Liverpool showed a team meeting in which Rodgers told his players that he was writing down the names of three people who would "let us down" over the course of the season and putting them in three envelopes to be revealed at the end of the campaign.

"I never feared being in the envelope," Reina said. "Beyond the fact that you can make a mistake or two on the pitch, no one can ever put my name in an envelope because of a lack of attitude or commitment. It's the first time I'd never seen a manager do that before and personally I liked it. It was designed to motivate, to make players determined not to be in that envelope, ensuring they are focused and 'plugged in' all season.

"In terms of the way we have played, there have been moments that have been very good. We are trying to impose a new style with a new manager and that takes time. We know that there are times that we have to take risks and the manager asks us to do that. There are mistakes at times, because it's not easy, but I prefer to make mistakes trying to do what the manager wants and trying to do the right thing.

"It's a style we identify with, that we're delighted with, and we're optimistic that sooner or later we'll be fighting near the top again."

How do you see recruiting youngsters after Benitez left? I know Raheem & Suso for example were very much affected by him being around.
Benitez has to be praised for bringing in the talents that are now breaking into the first team. Since his departure, the academy and reserves seem to have stagnated. Youngsters are still being bought however with Pep Segura's departure, the academy system that Benitez put in charge is slowly coming undone. There have been noises about Kenny Dalglish being involved in the club once again in terms of scouting and recruiting youngsters, but nothing's come of it yet.

Hmmm... Worried...

now i might be spoiling this for many but i suspect that Rodgers is going to put ....wait for it ........his own name in one of those envelopes ..WTF, shock , surprise , gasp !

motivational genius .

But they've clearly NOT stagnated.

Actually Macca, genuine question..
Who are the real promising youth recruits since Rafa's departure?
Is Sinclair one of them?
The lads that are in the current first team squad are all Rafa era, right?

Sinclair deffo, yes. McLaughlin also. Ibe, Nacho, Pelosi, Teixeira, Lussey are all great prospects IMHO (Ibe was a Kenny signing, Lussey obviously has been here a while). I think the youngsters in the first team are all Rafa signings as far as I remember.

Why would you put names of players into envelopes? If you get it wrong you're basically telling them you had no faith in them at the start.

There's also Ojo and Trickett-Smith who are both highly rated. Many of the best young players were brought in after Benitez left under Dalglish and Comolli, it's what's happened since they've left that'd worry me more than Rafa going.

This kid’s gonna be a star.

You can just see it. He moves well with the ball, he doesn’t give it away, he’s (as Macca pointed out) got that touch of confidence meets arrogance, and he moves forward with it everytime. Not sideways, not backwards, not aimlessly, but he’s got purpose about him. He’s come from nowhere to playing right in the middle of the Premier League, left Paul Scholes on his hole after 2 minuets, and fitted in really quite well.

People are talking about David Silva and making grossly unfair comparisons. Well Silva was at Valencia for 7 years before he got a big money move, and was fucked out on loan a couple of times during that spell too. You’ve got to be patient with these kids. Not everyone of them walks out of the Academy like Wayne Rooney or Stevie G and instantly owns the show. But if you can move straight into the first team, and not only do the basics right, but look like a fucking footballer too – all the age of what, 18? Then you’ve got a future.

Any young cunt can score a goal, ping a 50 metre pass or crunch a tackle – in Mellor, Spearing, Pongolle, Flanagan, Welsh, etc etc we’ve had enough of that junkyard nonsense through the years – very few of them can raise the level of those around them and instantly displace multi-million pound internationals above them.

This kid’s done that, and I for one am not against the confident swag one bit. We could have done with far more of that shit down through the years; you never saw Cristiano Ronaldo or Ginola or Henry curl up into a shell and wait to be able to make a tackle did you?

Good on the kid, he’s gonna be a gem.

'The fans can relax'. 'Everything's fine'. 'We're nearly there'.

Who the fuck does he think he is?

Little upstart.

I love the arrogance and lets be honest if he went and left for Bara now the majority of fans wouldn't be angry so what he says is correct.

Only because the supporters right now are desperate and based on that need have accordingly decided that all of our prospects are going to be shit hot world beaters in a couple of years.

Only it's been obvious for 2 years that Suso was the most talented player in the youth team (we've had threads about him), and that it really is encouraging and exciting to see his obvious quality has actually transferred from the reservers/youth to Premier League level.
Putting all our faith in Flanno is one thing. This is a Suso thread and it's so obvious to see he'll succeed at any club at any level if he leaves. And he's only 18.
So your 'let's get some perspective' post doesn't work this time round.

That's a hell of a statement to make. One that usually ends up being wrong.

Look, I don't care what he says, I'm glad he's high on himself. We shouldn't be relying on him though, for our sake or for his given his age.
