Stoke Semi Final Second Leg Match Thread

The thing is when we win the thing no one will look back in 10 years and think 'oh but remember how shit we were in the semi final'

The thing is no one we'll even remember we won the thing.

Didn't do much for Kenny Dalglish did it?

The thing is with the League Cup, when you get to the final, you stop being dismissive about it and start being enthusiastic.

Thats coz he spent 100M and came 7th in the league when that season he needed to get CL footy. The same would happen to Klopp next season if he fails to qualify for CL.

We will win that Cup. The new Kaiser has said so and that's good enough for me.

Everybody, I have an apology to make. A few minutes before half-time last night, my phone rang. I muted Old Faithful while I went to answer it and Old Faithful clearly didn't appreciate being shushed, 'coz that's when they "scored" their offside "goal". I'll know better in future.

OK, can't see a post-match thread, so I'll stick the player ratings in here. We won, so that's all that counts, but we deserved to lose on the night and created almost nothing. Stoke's goal was offside, but they should have scored at least two anyway.

Mignolet (8) There was the usual wonky distribution, but he claimed a few good high balls and saved two penalties to win the game. Played!

Flanno (7) For his first start back in 18 months, this was an impressive display. His ferocity was at its usual levels, and he was a welcome addition to a defence in need of his sort of qualities. He still needs to get that sharpness back, and he was left out of position on occasion, but great to see him play again

Toure (5) He wasn't helped by the vagaries of Sakho and Moreno, but he was left stranded at times and looked every one of his years. And stones.

Sakho (5) A walking fucking panic button. He does not convey security or calm in any way, and his jitters and decision-making were at times almost disastrous. He made two fantastic blocks in his own area, but again failed to deal with bouncing balls and high deliveries with his 50p swede. He isn't good enough to play for us.

Moreno (5) His defending is at times almost comically bad, in that he gets the basics of where to stand, run and position himself wrong often. But his pace, tenacity and work rate is a real weapon overall. He simply has to improve though.

Lucas (5) Too easily bypassed or simply flattened, Lucas shouldn't have started the game and his lack of genuine quality, pace and strength is detrimental to the team. Great penno, though

Can (5) Lollygagged around the pitch to no great effect and had one of those games in which those who doubt his quality, or indeed best position, will have been scratching their heads again. What type of player is he?

Henderson (5) Willing, but limited. Some very wayward passing and distribution. He needs to fix that heel problem, he isn't fit or happy.

Lallana (5) After the heroics of Norwich, back to the same old frustrations; lots of touches and effort, no real quality or end product. One terrible mistake at the end when he trod on the ball rather than just clearing it may have been punished.

Milner (6) Far more roundhead than cavalier, and isn't gifted with the most magical quality, but his incredible versatility, effort, desire and refusal to give up, is a boon to any team. His final ball and pass was not always good, but he never gave up and never ceded an inch.

Firmino (6) He isn't a player who can create anything himself really, and too often he flocked and prodded the ball to nobody at all. Had one decent effort, but needs far more support than he got.

Sub:

Benteke (6) Just refuses to shoot, but his passing and control were very good and he made a positive difference

Allen (7) Wrested back control in midfield and didn't give the ball away like Lucas, can and Henderson. Should have started instead of Lucas.

Stoke didn't score any legitimate goals, so I don't think you should have marked the defence down so heavily. Sakho & Co. were defending against mostly big, tall Stoke players and I think they coped manfully.

Completely agree, they were dealing with an aerial bombardment and by and large stood up to it pretty well. Ironic that Stoke's " goal " came from the limited amount of football they played instead of the long ball tactics they employed. Massive fail for Hughes as he might have got through the tie if they had played their usual game.

Not really a massive fail. They deserved to win, were the better team, and took plenty of credit away from last night. His tactical changes worked, and we created fuck all. He played a far more aesthetically pleasing and passing style in the league match, and lost that too. Undeservedly. Given our total lack of quality in defence, and susceptibility to high balls, Hughes played the right team and the right tactics.

It's even more satisfying in many ways, watching his whinging cob-on after the game.
