Yep I still maintain he could have done a more than decent job playing further forward. Even now. He never had great discipline defensively and to thrust him into defensive midfield was a mistake by Rodgers. As is his complete unwillingness to buy another defensive midfielder.

I dunno, I got the impression the last year or two that he had the idea of himself as the deep lying playmaker and wanted to demonstrate to everyone he could do it, and thus add to his legacy of being the complete all-round midfielder.

Yes, probably. I think his instincts were still pushing him to play further up but he'd talked himself, and/or Rodgers had talked him, into another role and he ended up neither quite doing one or the other.
