Southampton: Post Match

Abso-fucking-lutely. The amount of stick he gets on here is simply INSANE. He had a damn good match.

Really? He was out of position, players were getting in behind him with ease. He over elaborated in possession when put in a shit position by a team mate, when he should have hoofed it and needed an extra touch loads.

I've been a massive fan of his for a long time but this season he has, in general, looked half arsed and lackadaisical. He's not some pet hate of mine and I'm actually backing it up with evidence. In fairness to Johnson, Flanagan was not much better. All IMHO of course.

A word on Sterling - wow, his flexibility, attitude and skills are unreal. I said earlier he could be a great centre-forward - now I think he could even be a great central midfielder.

I didn't see it that way at all. He kept that side in check almost totally, very few times did Southampton pose a threat from our left, (except when we were keeping it narrow and they would pop the ball out wide) it was nearly always from our right or straight through the middle.

He did very well in the box and one of the biggest issues was he was almost always the main outlet for us (Flanno passed it straight back, Skrtel & Agger didn't know what the hell to do with the ball, so Skrtel usually hoofed it and Gerrard was nowhere to be seen), and whenever it came to Johnson he usually took the ball forward only to find 2-3 Southampton players all over him. With Gerrard, Allen and Coutinho all MIA.
It was noticeable that Suarez was his main outlet when it should have been one of the midfielders. Often this resulted in him having to ping it all the way back to Agger or even Ming. Yet even so he only lost possession once that I can remember, maybe twice, Southampton's pressing game was superb all over the pitch.

Flanno had an awful game, poor passing and diving into tackles to leave his side totally exposed. Skrtel got him out of the shit at least 3-4 times.

So you advocate free speech when it's an anti Semitic gesture and try to silence other free speech in another thread! Way to go mr freedom of speech!

mate, your getting carried away now, I'm not sanctioning you for expressing a view, i'm just disappointed with the general anti-johnson agendas being bought up on a day we got a great result and a clean sheet. disappointment in a view does not mean that view is sanctioned or prohibited. We won, let's focus on that.

It was a great result, superb but we struggled for long periods today. We won ugly today but won well in the end. That's a bloody good sign

Yeah, let's leave the Johnson debate out of this thread, or maybe start another one just for that. I'm pushed for time on here so can't start one & do it justice.

We got three points, three goals, & the fans were singing 'we're gonna win the league' again.

That's a fucking great day.

This result is as important for us as the Arsenal & Spurs match was in terms of morale. I truly believe the 'group' are starting to think they can do win the league this year.

Gerrard deserves the league winners medal most much more than some of the cunts who have done it. For him to win it in the twilight of his career, whilst reinventing himself in a new position, would be almost miraculous & give me hope that there is some sort of universal balance at work (no dantes, I don't want a metaphysical answer to that, cheers).

Remember earlier this season, we were always a team that played better in the first half but poorer in the second - we've shown in the last few games how we're now capable of stepping up a level in the second half as well. That's progress for you.
?

Great point mate - completely forgot about that ...

Coaching? Fitness? Who cares, keep it up boys!

The result is excellent. The performance was as average as it was against Swansea.

No way, John. Not even close, mate. That was barely organized chaos that we were genuinely lucky to win. They looked like scoring every time they attacked. Today was a different game altogether... We were never in real trouble, and certainly from 2-0, we were in complete control, even without the ball.

What? I can't possibly disagree more. Faffed about unnessarily, never took the simple option. Weak in the tackle, passing shite, work rate low.

This is Glen Johnson. Bang fucking average. Fuck him right off.
Spion Glen had a really good game and his ability to receive the ball under pressure and retain possession was sensational.

I was surprised Gerrard didn't let suarez take the pen - would have been nice.

No room for sentiment in this side now. They've learned that, & many other important lessons, this season.

Let's hope that some of the points those lessons cost don't come back to haunt us, but even if they do, for the long term aspirations of this side they may well be extremely valuable lessons in a positive manner.

From 2-0 we were comfortable but from the 10th minute until that goal we were being overrun. At one point Southampton had 70 per cent possession, Lallana hit the post and Ming had to make a superb save. Our attacking force is superb and Suarez in particular was a massive difference between the sides. The second goal took the wind out of Southampton agreed but saying we were never in trouble is something I can't agree with.

The important thing is we dug out a result, a good one at that, and the attacking players we have are formidable and will frighten the life out of any defence. Onwards we march defying most critics even those amongst our own fans. And a final note for Rodgers, was tactically superb but hey who needs managers?

A clean sheet, eh? Who would have thought? Great result, that. Damn fine result against a tricky opponent.

brain says yes but heart would have liked suarez to get another.🙂

For me...

  • We seemed really sloppy in possession today. Hendo, Allen, and Coutinho all had some very sloppy moments, but I did think we looked much better in the MF despite that. Even when Southampton were starting to put some real pressure on us towards the latter part of the first half. it was more a result of them being great than us being poor.
  • Suarez was good, but not great, and Sturridge was okay as well. Nothing horrible from either of them, but clearly not at their best against tough opposition. Two week rest should do them some good.
  • Allen's addition to the MF gave us a lot more control of the game, even if it didn't look that way at times. If we played Sterling+Coutinho this time, we would've absolutely been shredded. After Southampton ran out of energy around 60-70 minutes and we scored the second, we were legitimately able to control the game.
  • Gerrard had a good match, and a well taken penalty. Not a whole lot else to note.
  • Hendo needs to work on his shooting, especially coming off volleys, quite a few drop to him.
  • Coutinho was poor today, did very little over the course of the match. Hopefully the long break does him some good.
  • Agger and Skrtel were pretty decent, but Skrtel especially had a couple of stupid moments in defence. Think this was a team that played to their strengths, but most of their threat came from the wide areas. Need to be more decisive on the ball, they have a tendency to fizz it in to the fullbacks when there's nothing on and putting them in a coffin corner. Can't wait for Sakho to be back.
  • Flanagan was caught out of position a few times for us, but was very good for me. Couple of sloppy passes, but that's nothing we aren't used to. Didn't really get a lot of help on his side with the overlap, so it's hard to criticize too much, can't expect him to account for multiple players. Looked good going forward though.
  • I thought Johnson was okay last week against Swans, but this week he was our worst player on the pitch. There were times when he was put in a tough, but manageable situation and made an absolute mess out of it. Has a tendency to be way too far up the pitch at times. There were 2-3 memorable occasions where he had an opportunity to just clear the ball when he was in a tight corner, but instead tried to dribble his way out, or pick out a pass to someone else who was under pressure resulting in a turnover in our own third. Defended way too narrowly at times, contributed absolutely nothing going forward as well, and he was facing Southampton's less aggressive flank. Cissokho's done more with less, Flanagan's done more as well at LB.
  • Mignolet was fantastic, he had a couple of excellent punches, and that misdirection save he had was as good as I've seen. Was asked to a lot of sweeping by our CB's, and did so admirably. Hopefully this quiets the criticism a bit, I think he's been very valuable for us this season
  • Sterling sub probably secured a win for us, good to see him get another goal. Didn't do too much beyond that, but it was a focal point of the match.

And some Ratings...
Suarez - 7.5
Sturridge - 6
Coutinho - 5
Henderson - 6
Allen - 7
Gerrard - 7.5
Johnson - 4.5
Agger - 6
Skrtel - 5.5
Flanagan - 6
Mignolet - 7.5

Sterling - 6.5
Aspas - N/A

Overall, will take the win, but the worry is that we were so sloppy at times. Hopefully having two weeks to get it right will lead to a good run to finish the season.

We've never had so many points after 28 games in the Premier League before. Thats impressive!

A Lot of critical thinking going on in here.

We've disassembled a very tricky opponent, kept a clean sheet and scored three!

Oh and we're fucking second and slap bang in the middle of a title race.

Smile and enjoy and tear glenjo a new one when there's just cause to!
