Southampton: Post Match

He admittedly hasn't been all I hoped for after watching him play so well numerous times for Swansea. However, I really can't agree that he was poor against So'ton. Rodgers' all-action style makes it vital that the ball be kept moving quickly (or recycled early after we win it back) and Allen is much better at that than Lucas, whose passing is generally slower and less incisive (and whose tackling is more risky in terms of giving fouls away).

I agree with this 100%. I actually gave Allen 3rd spot in the MotM thread.

The thing about Allen is, he's one of those players that you don't notice just how much he does, unless you're studying him for the whole game. I suppose it's because when he has the ball, he usually always plays a very simple (albeit effective) pass. He's by no means "flashy" or overly skillful, but he works like a trojan, fights to win the ball back (for the size of him) and passes well.

And I have always been very critical of Allen since he arrived at Anfield. But I will also give credit where credit is due. I thought he was brilliant against Southampton and his half hour against Swansea (I was at the match) I couldn't believe that I was watching Joe Allen.

Hopefully we'll get 9 more paragraphs of Mark talking about the stuff he thinks we should see for 15M now.

That'd be great.

Almost ditto (had him tied with Sterling for 3rd) and posted this :
Allen - 7.5 - had a decent first half but had his pocket picked a couple of times. 2nd half was much much better and was one of the key factors in us wresting control of the midfield.

However can't agree with not noticing him. He is so short that it's often like a chihuahua attacking a doberman in midfield and you can't miss him - still, I often see the Chihuahua come off best though 😀

Bloke walks into a pub and asks: "Anybody left a Dobie tied up outside?"

Another bloke says: "Yeah, what of it?"

"My dog's just killed it."

"You what?! What kind of a dog have you got?"

"Chihuahua."

"Oh yeah? And that killed a Doberman?"

"Yeah. Your dog tried to swallow it."

Allen, suddenly overrated after Swansea game and
the same Allen, suddenly underrated by few after Southampton game...
I dont think we have a player like Allen who can seduce the opponent players to lose control and give the ball away, specially the cute way Allen does it. Allen has his limitations but he is a fantastic player and his natural game is more suited to possession based style. The biggest factor in Southampton game was, I think it was the first time we had played a diamond so it was pretty clear that players had difficulty understanding the exaxct roles and therefore the midfield looked bad. But another reason to it was Coutinho, by his standards he had a poor game and that had clearly affected the midfield, this factor was clearly understood when Sterling came for Coutinho. I dont know why people expect fancy stuff from Allen, he is a player who always helps the players around him to raise their game.

As opposed to listening to you acting like a playground bully to DB in every thread he posts in? Funny you're quick enough to give it out, but you had to complain about HC yesterday. Pot, kettle and all that shabang. I explained pretty fairly about Allen and that I appreciate what he does, don't recognise the actual points I raised though, no. Act like a bellend instead, it's your comfort zone.

But is he a modern footballer?

I think we should have Allen in all our away games for the rest of the season

I think we will for most, it seems Rodgers is being ever so slightly pragmatic in that respect.

Not anywhere near the levels of pragmatism of Rafa or houiller, but judged against his standards this season.

BR pragmatism is working out just fine for us at the minute. Its all part of his master plan to dominate, castrate and disentegrate the opposition. Divide and conquer!
