So who do we want/expect/hope?

the team that did win plays attacking football, as does the team that won the english and spanish league.

Look I love to watch attacking football as much as anyone but I'm trying to say that it doesn't guarantee results.

Would you want lovely attacking football that ends in second place or football that gets results?

Lol if only it was that simple. Watch United and see how Rooney comes deep, Welbeck pulls wide, Young darts centrally etc. They spend hours working on a pattern of play and don't simply just bomb as many players as they can into the box.

They get players forward and show good movement and try to drag the opposition, I don't think anyone was saying they just throw 6 players forward and hope it lands with one of them.

I'm getting really bored of this shit, will AVB be announced as our manager tonight or is that hogwash now?

World's best player @ barca and they're reaping the benefits of something started in 93,but as seen, they can lose games when they can't break down opposition. They can't win ugly.

Munich... Haven't they not won much for a few years now? Constantly found out in europe.

admittedly no plan b, but they push the game massively in their favor by spending as much time as possible in the opposition half. when you are that dominant you mostly wont need a plan b. grinding out wins absolutely has it's place and it's served manu well over 20 years but I think we are in a position to say what do we want to do in the next 5 years and go in that direction rather than aimlessly going from season to season in the hopes that everything clicks. I want a long term plan not a short term plan.

No nasty Fergie shouts at them so they get in the box

Yeah, that's exactly what he meant.

The point was there, it wasn't hard to follow. They attack in numbers, I don't think anyone's that naive to think they don't work on patterns of play aswell. When they don't get players forward or they don't follow instruction, Fergie's usually ranting on the touchline.

Right, so you think he'll have an equally successful season at Chelsea if he keeps the job?

One Swallow doesn't make a Summer.
No I don't.

But people who talk about proven winners and the importance of trophies etc won't acknowledge him. The reason is if they rule him out they'll do it on the basis that in reality he was just a bit lucky.

And that raises an awkward thought or two in Rafa fans

I'd place him above any other current manager in the Premiership purely because he has now won the biggest trophie in European football as well as the FA Cup, despite being of the belief that he was in the right place at the right time and didn't particularly seem to change much/ do anything special - he has now got two big cup scalps. I agree, that is exactly the sort of CV our next manager needs , in my opinion.

I'd rather play like George Graham's Gooners and win titles than Wengers wanna be's and win nothing.

Oh the above breaks my heart, I remember Graham`s teams and they will were horrible, dirty as hell sure they won but would hate to see Liverpool play that way...The reason I don`t want Rafa is that although the man loves the club I was never a huge fan of his style of football. In 09 he lifted the shackles off the team when it was too late, and that cost us the title.

I would take a punt on AVB or Martinez as the list is getting shorter every day, maybe the club will surprise us with the appointment of someone we weren`t expecting but please not Capello...If they appoint the GM (Director of Football) in the next week or two and he is vastly experienced I think they will then go for the likes of AVB or Martinez.

I don`t believe in results over style, both should work in tandem, that is why people love the Liverpool of 70`s instead of that horrible Leeds team. Why we all are love Barcelona and still talk about Dutch football and the imprint it made on the modern game.

I don`t want success with puke football

Keep avoiding it Ryan, nobody will see through your bullshit.

The reality is nobody would consider Di Matteo a decent candidate, despite him having done the same as one of the very popular choices in 1/20th of the time.

Bullshit? Ross, you've accredited me with the criteria that I'm "judging managers by" despite me offering nothing of the sort.

If I cared about winning cup trophies as the only criteria, I wouldn't have sang from the rooftops about getting Dalglish out the door.

It's one factor. Out of many.

The taw podcast isn't bad, though Tony Evans annoys me, shame as I loved his book.

They are pro sos to a point, but it's telling in the cast before this 42 the majority (just.) of the panel wanted kenny out but had grave concerns about FSG's ability to replace him.

Similar to this forum I believe.

BVB won the german league - attacking football
madrid won the spanish league - attacking football
most successful side in europe over the past 5 years - attacking football
most succesful side in england over the past 5 years - attacking football

Every successful Liverpool team ever - dour, grinding victories with no sexy attacking football in sight.

It shouldn't be a factor at all.

No they weren't. Peoples memories might be tarnished and many have us dressed up as an attacking side, but we weren't dour. We dug out victories when we had to and romped a fair few times too. Dalglish's infamous side was one of the best attacking sides I've seen.

So no, not every successful Liverpool team ever was dour, infact, not many of them were. We were winners and we had balance and most of our more eye catching players were also capable of putting up a fight.

Fortress Anfield was reduced to a supermarket where most teams rocked up and got away with the goods. Substance over style. Results first to get into the top 4. However, I do believe that if ever the time was right to implement a footballing identity, theres no time like the present. We haven't yet won the Premiership, so if the defensive approach hasn't worked, the time is now to switch up.

I think Martinez has the edge over AVB simply because he has experience of working on a shoe string budget and getting his teams to play expansive football if you can call it that. With a second interview happening he looks the favourite.

There has to be concern over Martinez defensive capabilities though. I guess that's maybe why Clarke was asked to stay on, with a view to us bringing in an attack minded coach, perhaps they felt it might give balance to that.

That's true, but IMO there are better choices out there than either Martinez or (especially) AVB. I'll get behind whoever we do appoint though.

There is a poll on EST and Rafa is walking it with 56% of the votes.

Boas is second with 13%
