He's leaving Schalke ... I know he's 34, but he's been a really good player for them the last two years and his movement and experience would be a great addition to our team. I think he'd work well with Suarez and/or Carroll ...

Schalke striker Raul has decided not to extend his contract with the club and will leave Gelsenkirchen at the end of the season.

Raul, 34, has enjoyed a fruitful two-year spell in the Bundesliga, scoring 39 goals in 96 games for the Royal Blues since arriving from Real Madrid in 2010.

But despite having forged a prolific partnership with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in 2011-12 - the pair have netted 63 times between them - Raul has opted to leave the club and will announce the reasons for his decision at a press conference on Thursday.

Raul's departure will be a cause for concern for Schalke as they are currently in the process of trying to convince top scorer and fellow fans' favourite Huntelaar to sign an extension to his current deal.

Speculation regarding Huntelaar and Raul's futures has been rife for months, and the former Spain international has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer.

We should have done everything in our power to bring him here when he left Madrid. I thought he didn't look a footballer of 34 years in the europa game against Athletic Bilbao. He'd be a fantastic option/back up but would he sit on the bench?

I always think of Fowler when I see him play and wonder why Robbie stopped giving a shit.

He's actually a very similar player to Dalglish.

We won't get him though, Kenny will be too busy trying to lure Paul Dickov out of retirement.

Come on mate ...

I think he's the ideal 'Bosman' signing for the club ... Leadership, desire, winner, goalscorer, assists ... You name it, he does it. He's got 3-4 years to go - we should defo take him.

I was hugely in favour of signing him 2 years ago. It's still a valid option however and as mentioned previously he could become a McAllister-type talisman.

we need to concentrate on youth even if we have to tread water for a few years to do it.
The focus should always be on young talent but that's no reason why you can't bring in an old head from time to time, especially if he's got such pedigree. Look where United's season was going until Scholes came out of retirement, look what McAllister did for us. Klinsmann was in his 30's (i think he was 31) when he signed for Spurs, Barcelona signed Henrik Larsson when he was 33 etc, etc.

Del Piero won't be offered a new contract by Juve for next season....

Hmmm

Maybe sign him so he can show our lot how to take free kicks and corners

it's funny , you see a player like Cristiano ronaldo and the amount of goals he's scoring , what he's achieved already etc etc, yet for me i'd pick the likes of raul ahead of him any day . He's a proper footballer , full of skill and 'grace' ..not just raw power and smashing it !.

we have them they already
carra - 34
gerrard - 32
maxi - 31
bellamy - 31
kuyt - 30

how many more old heads do we need?

Only gerrard is fit to lace rauls boots there.

Shift kuyt, maxi combine the saved wages and throw it at Raul.

Make our childhood dreams come true!

Some players age better than others; Fowler, Owen, Fat Ronaldo etc were all toast by the age of 30 whereas Ian Wright, Gary Mac, Scholes etc are as good in their 30's as they were in their 20's.
30/31 is hardly old though Neil. Carra's the only pensioner and unfortunately he's suffering from wear-and-tear.

"I have made a decision about my future, and will not stay at Schalke. It has been a really tough decision. I'd like to thank the club, the president and the manager for their patience. This decision is the right one for me," Raul said.

"My future doesn't lie in Europe. I will get together with my agent to discuss the offers we have received. I will then announce where I will go. It will be a less competitive league.

"My decision is based on several factors. I'm still confident enough to play in a top league, but I can't foresee the future.

"The key factor is my family. In the Bundesliga you don't have much time with your family. My choice of which league to join will reflect my desire to spend more time with my family.

"I want to thank the club, coaches and coaching staff. I had a wonderful two years here and the club will always be in my heart.

"I also want to say many thanks to the fans. They are very special, showed me lots respect and affection. It will be emotionally difficult to say goodbye. Schalke will always be a part of my life."

That is funny.
