Former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has admitted to being surprised that the club did not approach him when the manager's position became available at Anfield last summer.

The 53-year-old, who guided the Reds to both FA Cup and Champions League success during his time at the club, also believes his appointment would have been well greeted by the Liverpool faithful.

"It was strange not to be approached," he told the Irish Independent.
"We know the club, the players, the Academy and we have even more experience now...the fans were positive about the idea."

Benitez left the Merseyside club by mutual consent during the summer of 2010 after a poor season saw his team finish seventh, missing out on a Champions League place.

But despite the sour manner in which his time at Anfield ended, Benitez was quick to point out what he achieved during his six-year reign at the club.

He added: "We used to play so many important games that it seemed it was normal and it wasn't.

"People were talking about 'the past', but just a few years ago Liverpool FC was number one in Europe."

We may well have been number one in Europe, but without City and Spurs (and Newcastle etc) to contend with we endured our worst run in 22 years in the league and finished 7th in his final season, getting near winning the league with substantial money spent just once in 6yrs. I like Rafa but everytime I want to see his side of things, he comes out with a load of egotistical guff and starts banging on about his European pedigree, he misses the fucking point everytime. If he hadn't been so preoccupied prioritising Europe and been less stubborn in his approach of many aspects of his reign, he might still have a job.

I don't really get the "we have more experience" point either. Experience of what? Fucking up in Italy?

A bit of support for Rodgers would have been more endearing.

Personally I don't think our decline has anything to do with Spurs and Newcastle, you can argue City's vast resources are a reason, but generally I think the owners and executives have been the author of our downfall.

All of our Managers have done their best to perform in a chaotic structure including Rafa who looks to have been the pick of the bunch as each month passes.

As for his ego, what successful football Manager doesn't have one of those?

I wonder if he has a picture of himself on his wall?

We were better under Rafa IMO. Whether we would have won the league if he had stayed and had 100M thrown at him in one go like Kenny did is hard to say but i suspect we might well be back in Europe at least.

Others cant stand him of course.

We were brilliant at times during Rafa's regime. We were number one in Europe. He still never stopped talking about the players he didn't have and he struggled with stabilizing the squad in his crave for that one new player.... Good times and bad times Rafa!!

He had not far off £80m thrown at him in one go over near enough the same amount of time, it's fair to point out that the Carroll fee was proportionate to the Torres sale.

Keane £20
Aquilani £20m
Johnson £17.5m
Riera £9m
Brazilian Keeper £3m
Dosenna £7m
N'Gog £1.5m
Krygiakos £1.5m

£79.5m, we also brought in another load of youngsters during that time that got nowhere.

I think that apart from the Aquilani debacle, he did pretty fecking good in the financial aspect of buying and selling.
Even with Keane we recouped a ton of money.
Haven't been able to do that with signings since.

The Carroll transfer was stupid, but we can cut Kenny some slack here, cause with any other manager we'd have kept him and got some use out of him rather than look completely desperate to get rid after only a season and inevitably having clubs seriously undervalue him.
But when you look at others, like 10.5m for Alonso, 6m for Lucas and 18m for Mascher (of which we recouped close to 60m already), and compare that to 18m Henderson, 10m Adam and 20m Downing, you do wonder what Rafa would have done.
He's not perfect, I remember a time when he wanted a 12m rated young Downing from M'boro, but his signings were miles better in general, as the transfer fees since then have proven.
Negotiating wages was the downfall, if it really was him that did that, as opposed to Parry.

The owners and executives played their part by having stupid expectations in the past three years but the managers are the reason we've spent more than 400m in the last decade and find ourselves in eight.

I await some asset stripping comments, that lack any shred of evidence to support them though.

Well, luckily he never fails to remind us how egotistical and self-centred he can be.

You mean like Shanks, Ferguson, Clough, Mourinho, Wenger and those other nice guys who are world class managers? They are all egotists. That's the point. That's what sets them apart. Massive self-belief.

I never thought he should have been sacked. Wish he was still here now.

Massive like!

Which club is Guardiola managing right now?
You mean the manager who decided to take a year out after the stresses of making Barcelona THE team to beat in world football?

Think he's unemployed actually.... Must be shit

Btw, I'm actually agreeing with Ross on this.

Pep wanted me out after being massively successful

Rafa is unemployed after being successful 8 years ago

Strange how those living world class managers have good jobs but no decent club has gone near Rafa since he took us and Inter to midtable

I think the opening sentence of the opening post might be a clue as to Rafa's thinking.

He may well have been receiving offers but has waited for a second chance?

I doubt many regard him as unemployable.

Come on Ross you're being a bit disingenuous there, it is well known that his wife prefers to stay in the area and that rather limits the clubs he could go to. Like it or not he loves the club and would probably do the job for nothing which is rather endearing in my view, although it is time for him to perhaps think about looking elsewhere.

I honestly don't get this. You think the same slimy fucker that negotiate for a new job behind the clubs back then refused to go until he got 6m out of the club would work for free?

PR is a wonderful thing.

Roberto Di Matteo should hire Rafa's publicist. Di Matteo doesn't get nearl enough credit for the CL win

If you've held an executive business position you'll be aware that generally, failure ultimately leads to you being responsible. Of course, along the way you'll make changes to your Managers to try to turn things around, and LFC have certainly done that; but if it doesn't work it's you who carries the can.

I think there's ample evidence that the club's executives have not been up to the mark, whereas some of the Managers have brought home trophies often against all the odds. I don't think it's just transfer policy that has eroded the club.

Something you wouldn't do in your profession in the same circumstances ? ( by the way £6mill was compensation for all sacked staff )

Indeed, the hypocrisy is exquisite. Like you wouldn't look after your own interests. Silly argument really.
