Rafa meets Broughton and Purslow

Thinks he owns the place

Liverpool tonight claimed today’s meeting between Rafael Benitez, chairman Martin Broughton and managing director Christian Purslow was “constructiveâ€.

The Spaniard was hoping to be given an idea of what transfer budget is likely to await him in the summer, although it is unlikely Broughton - as a non-executive director - has the authority to give definite assurances.

Benitez was hoping to get a better idea about what the future holds both for the club and himself personally at today’s meeting, although unless a buyer is found it seems improbable co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett will invest any more money.

A Liverpool spokesman tonight said: “We are pleased that the first of what is intended to be a series of meetings took place today between the chairman, managing director and the manager. The meeting was constructive.

“The chairman shared his views about plans for the future of the club. There was an exchange of views on issues of concern to both the board and the manager which were either addressed or to be picked up in forthcoming meetings.â€

Meanwhile, Hicks is angry at the publication of comments from him which suggested it will take another two years to sell the club.

Reports today quoted the Texan as saying he and fellow American George Gillett had been owners for three years but would not be in charge for a total of five.

That was interpreted as him claiming it would take two years to sell the club he and Gillett bought back in 2007

However, it is understood Hicks has reacted angrily to the publication of the remarks, which he does not deny making but which were part of an interview with American magazine Sports Business Journal in late March.

The Texan has pointed out the comments were made before he and Gillett officially put the club up for sale last month.

He also clarified a quote in which he said he had paid a “terrible price†for ownership of the club - he claims that referred to his American-based sports interests in the form of Texas Rangers baseball team and Dallas Stars ice hockey franchise.

His request for balance and perspective is, however, unlikely to cut much ice with the majority of supporters who are keen to see the Americans’ reign come to a swift end.

That still seems some way off with the sale ongoing, with newly-appointed chairman Broughton overseeing the process.

Benitez has been linked with Juventus since January but the Italian club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League - similar to Liverpool - and their apparent waning interest in appointing the Spaniard makes leaving a difficult option.

But staying and having to work on a limited budget - especially when Benitez believes he needs four of five players to at least get the squad back into top-four contention - also presents difficulties.

Those last two paragraphs have depressed me immensely.

Well the best bit about that report has to be about the club not taking 2 years to be sold. Once again creative fucking journalism right now......

Its so difficult to know what is the truth and what are lies from the press.

Ditto.

Bite the bullet and sack Benitez now. Bring in a mnager who can get the best out of average players and work on a shoe string budget.

I dont know mate, I suppose MON would be the best of a bad bunch? We need some stability, otherwise I can see us going into freefall.

Rafa is an good manager. Strong defensively. Integrity. Stand up against assholes like Fergie. I still think he has done as much as he can with Pool. i assume he can be succesful other places, and that would be fine. He just can not continue at Pool. His defensive mind in addition to all turmoil out of the pitch just makes Liverpool FC a huge negative meltdown. We kill all optimisme around by being so fucking negative on and off the pitch.

What a strange situation, speaking to someone who's very appointment is contingent on the club being in limbo, to seek reassurances about future planning.

I'd have to say i'd agree with you on that one. Is it not still Hicks and Gillett that own the club? I find it a little odd they have nor want any say in what happens going forward if there are no guaratees of sale or future money available going forward. That would indicate to me that the sale process is at a point where it no longer matters what the future of the club happens to be with regard to them selling on, ie it doesnt seem to me as if it is effecting them?

As it seems at present we are either right now right up in the fucking air with everything, or an elaborate takeover has been in place for some time now. To be honest, I actually hold trust in the fact that we have people in charge such as Purslow and Broughton right now rather than Hicks and Gillett. It seems that the staff Hicks and Gillett have brought in actually are doing some good for our club at least.

Ill still hold some hope that things are going to look up in the near future.

What do you think of Mark Hughes? I know he's a scum cunt at heart but he did a decent job with Wales, Blackburn and to a lesser degree City, but he'd definitely be up for it, is young, British, and he has a bit fire in him...Lol, maybe that's why he was called "Sparky". (hope he doesn't spontaneously combust!!)

Martin O'Neill and Mark Hughes.

It really depends on what expectations we have for next year. If we want stability while expecting many of our stars leaving and a shoestring budget then perhaps the two above might help. If we want to win the title though then probably not.

I guess everything just depends on people's expectations. After the turbulence we have had this season, what do we expect next season? Top four finish? Title? Stability? Or just giving it the best that we got. Some of the names I see being bandied about in the forum, I don't think we can win the title with them in charge.

[/quote]Hodgeson is the man who ticks all those boxes. Just look what he has done with Bobby Zamora, Aaron Hughes et al. Average players playing out of their skins week in, week out. He identfied where Fulham were weak and bought steady, competant guys for very little outlay.

Whilst all this boardroom turmoil plays out and Rafa takes the Juve gig, Woy would be a great appointment to steady the ship.

Again this goes back to what you want from us next season, Stu. 'Steadying the ship' doesn't sound like you expect us to challenge for the title.

You know, for the first time in years, I really fear for our club.

Broughton allays transfer fears

By Carl Markham, Press Association Sport

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has dismissed suggestions Fernando Torres or Steven Gerrard will have to be sold to ease the club's mounting debt.

Financial reports released for the first time show the club itself made an operating loss before tax of £16million in the year ending July 31 2009, down from a profit £10.2million profit in the previous 12 months.

Kop Holdings, the company set up by co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to buy Liverpool in 2007, made a loss before tax of £54.9million.

That plunged the finances further into the red with the debt rising from £299.8million to £351.4million, with interest payments on loans increasing by £3.6million to £40.1million.

With their rivals sensing weakness there have already been reports of Chelsea preparing a £70million bid for Torres and Real Madrid considering a £35million offer for Gerrard.

Broughton said neither instances would be considered as both players remained integral to manager Rafael Benitez's team.

"There is absolutely no reason to sell either Torres or Gerrard," said the British Airways chairman, brought in last month by the co-owners to oversee the sale of the club.

"I don't want to sell either of them. Rafa does not want to sell either of them, the club is not looking to sell them,

"We don't need to do it to pay off any debt.

"Torres is one of the great players and every club would love to have him. We have got him and there is no intention of selling him."

Broughton yesterday held his first long-awaited meeting with Benitez, during which the pair discussed the current situation regarding the search for new owners and also plans for the summer squad rebuilding.

There are further get-togethers scheduled but with debt levels increasing at the club it seems unlikely Benitez will be handed the £50million-plus he feels he needs to get the club back into Champions League contention.

"We have met, it was a frank exchange of views, constructive and very helpful," said Broughton.

"The squad does need strengthening and that is an on-going process which will not be stopped by the sale.

"We have sat down with Rafa to determine what is the strength of it (the squad), what it needs, who are the right players and who needs to be sold.

"What I have asked from Rafa is what any football club board ask at the end of the season.

"It is for an appraisal of each of the players, where the weak links are, which players he would prefer to sell if he had the opportunity, which positions he needs to fill, who are his prime candidates and what would be his priorities."

That dialogue will at least give Benitez some cause of optimism, considering there were times in the past - before he signed his new five-year contract just over a year ago which gave him more control over transfers - when matters were taken out of his hands.

Missing out on signing Gareth Barry, who eventually left Aston Villa for Manchester City, and the farcical arrival and departure of Tottenham's Robbie Keane in a five-month period were just two examples which previously angered the Spaniard.

Broughton also revealed he hoped new owners would be in place at Anfield in a "matter of months".

"Success for me is completing a sale within a relatively short period - a matter of months - to someone who, hindsight says, was a very good owner for Liverpool," he told liverpoolfc.tv.

Just been sent some info regarding yesterdays meeting,

Benitez will only get money from player sales when and if the club is sold. Rafa wanted it in writing broughton and purslow refused. Rafa is now consulting lawyers for breach of contract by the club. He has handed his resignation and expect news soon. Benitez was told he would get the money for Alonso sale only recieved 5 million hence why he wanted it in writing.

This doesn't sound too good.

But how is not confirming their stance in writing a breach of contract?

If he's gonna hit them with that, surely they could come back with "Where's our fourth place you guaranteed?"

About as much as his would?

Verbal contract, nothing in writing, so . . .

So they wouldn't guarantee money from player sales even?

That effectively means we can't really buy or sell *anyone*.

If true the only faint glimmer of hope we have for next season is that it was a ploy to get Rafa to resign.

All sounds a bit mad.
