Oh to be clear it was misguided and inappropriate for him to use that term, especially on twitter. But it's not 'racist'

Oh and based on that picture it looks like it was sent as a direct (private) message rather than a public tweet.
Not racist? There's no way you truly believe that?!

In its simplist form it's an insult telling someone they are behaving like a white person instead of an Asian person. That's about as racist as you get, even if it's not as inflammatory as other insults.

If I said someone was acting like a black person the world would be up in arms.

You can't have it both ways. Racism is a slur on an ethnicity. Full stop.
It's always a shame when people aren't aware of the racial connotations of a word, isn't it?

Sheesh, Englishmen - like Ross and Gerry - make me worry i can say anything safely nowadays!

Oh yeah, I'm sure your man isn't a racist, but he said something he shouldn't have, and given what he's famous for, he should have known better.

On a side note, isn't it weird that no matter what people say, we never want to accuse of actually being a racist. Just that they might have said something racist...

Could someone call me a coconut? No.

Could they call you it? Yes.

That makes it racist, it's an insult you can only use to people with dark coloured skin, therefore it is racist.

In fairness to Asim, Anita hasn't offered an opinion for him to agree with yet, so I can see why he's struggling. Understandable really.

Ahahahahahahahahahahaha

Is wrong. The white equivalent would be 'wigger'.

Its racist at the most fundamental level because it comes from a belief that race dictates behaviour, or should dictate behaviour.

If an Asian person called me a coconut I would be offended but I wouldn't think they're racist.

If a white person said it...I'm not sure what I'd feel tbh, I think I'd be a bit gon smacked. And them maybe speak to them in Urdu or Punjabi and ask 'who's the coconut now, bitch?!'

My five-year-old niece told me I had a head like a boiled egg when I said her younger brother needed a haircut.

I wonder was she being racist?

That's like an Escher print of prejudice.

It's more of an insult of your lost your heritage, identity rather than your a better person than them, or they are a lower race kinda thing.

Bounty, Malteser or Uncle Tom are far better slurs of this nature.
I was called Malteser countless times when I was a nipper, on account of my dad being from there.

Wish I had a less fattening centre now.

People are confusing racism with culture and identity.

Like I said someone of the same race using such terms may be offensive/inappropriate but to say its racist isn't right IMHO.

I don't know how to say this without it sounding awful/confrontational. But it's completely inappropriate/colonial minded for a white person to dictate to two Asian people how they should discuss their race and issues around it.

I'm sorry if that sounds bad

Nice post RE: the colonial minded part though, in this day and age where anyone can see what anyone is saying on twitter or any other social network platform, I genuinely believe there is grounds for intervention.

It doesnt sound bad, it sounds reasonable. I think the main sticking point is people's definition of a racist term differing.

I distinctly remember some of you apologists saying that Suarez was in England therefore what he said was Rasist, even if he said it in Spanish to a conversation initiated by a Frenchman in Spanish? So dictating how someone should behave in that instance is alright?

I'm of asian origin, and i didn't know the meaning of this term. Having learned its meaning now, i'd certainly be offended if someone used it. The whole point about racism is that a person's identity should not come from the color of his skin. So saying that i have lost my identity because i don't think/act like those who are of my skin color should do is definitely racist.

LadyRed is mental....

Calling someone a Negro or Black or Brown or White skinned can be offensive but mostly it's a fact. They have that skin colour.

Saying that someone does not behave like how his race is supposed to behave is a distinct attack based on the color of the skin.

It seems some would rather argue that the former is more of a racist remark than the later...I'm not quite sure how this works.

All said and done, i agree with Vlad this topic is tedious and is best left alone. We are not going to solve the issue of racism by furiosly posting on the internet.

I work with a Ghanian lad.

He calls me the "white monkey".

That's not that bad considering it's Australia.

I'm going to have a multicultural wank about getting blown by loads of women of all races. I might stick a dude in there licking my bumring just to prove I'm not homophobic.

Funnily enough it's probably what spion has done in passing comment re abbot, and me' posting re Suarez. I hardly posted on the abbott thread but I backed her apparently. Why I suggested he was lazy.
Fuck off. I said if I remember correctly. Now who's being fucking lazy? So I remembered wrong and I'll take that back.
