Just like we praise Slot for the players he improved compared to last season under Klopp - Gravenberch, Diaz, Konate etc - we have to acknowledge that Quansah has taken a giant step back, it seems. Last season he looked like a young VVD, but from that first game undef Slot when he was subbed at half-time his confidence went downhill and hasn’t recovered. The way he’s playing now is barely Premier league standard with glaring defensive mistakes in every game, no confidence on the ball, he looks seemingly slower and unsure where to be.

What happened and what can be done? I want to see Quansah of last season again!

Honestly, I think Slot handled this one badly. The kid clearly needs to feel the manager's confidence. He didn't go from being an heir to VVD to where he is now talentwise. I'd imagine the talent is in there, but Slot needs to unlock it. I think you're right to highlight this Rurik.

I think some of his worst attributes have now become obvious ones. His positioning when with the ball and time he takes on it was obviously an issue last season, this season it seems extenuated. He hasn't had any run of games unlike last season and form of Konate has made it harder for him. Slot is partly to blame but when he has had his chance, he has come on and just looked shakey and out of depth. Maybe he believed his own hype but definitely playing RB hasn't helped him either with little play time he has had.

Slots’ treatment suggests he’s going to be less patient and forgiving with the younger players, but I’m surprised it’s affected Quansah so much. He’s never seemed to lack confidence in any interviews I’ve seen. I also don't want to overstate that point. Slot is a lovely guy and appears just strictly professional.

Ultimately, these are professional, well paid athletes here to do a job. Not every manager is going to act like a father figure, so it’s really down to him to focus on delivering. We don’t know what’s going on for him behind the scenes, and there’s not much game time to judge him on. He started strongly last year after a solid preseason, carrying that form into the season. Now, he’ll need to adapt to a more disrupted playing pattern if he’s going to seriously challenge Konate and Gomez. Hopefully he can do so. The progress of young players is rarely linear, so I'm hoping this is just one of the many bumps in the road towards becoming a top class player.

We saw signs of it last season. Remember the United game in FA cup?
What I remember from that game was that he made a really horrible mistake, and I expected him to struggle for the rest of the game, but he didn’t. He dug in and played well where a lesser character would have fallen to pieces. That spoke to me of resilience. The lad is unquestionably in a slump right now, but he’s still young and has time on his side. I remember Carragher going through a spell like this. Every time he made a mistake the opposition scored. That non-sending-off near the end is the first time Quansah has caught a break this season, other than that every mistake has been punished, every deflection has ended in a goal. I think he’ll be alright.

Playing Centre back for a club like Liverpool is ultimately about mentality.

It's what separates the Virgils from the Maguires of this world.

He's young but he needs to learn what an unforgiving world this is and believe in himself nonetheless. Its easy to be smug when you're top of the world but fighting back when you're down is the making of a man.

His online antics was a bit of an indication to me that he's not the brightest, or the most focused young man.

The interview where he spoke of Matip's injury was an early hint too.

This guy genuinely feels like he's made it already and Arne Slot kept his ego in check with that Ipswich sub.

Quansah needs to humble himself, get his head down and work to become a better footballer, instead of messaging hoes online trying to arrange hook up dates whilst we're playing in their city.

That’s a good point. Maybe he lost focus a bit, which is kind of understandable after an earlier-than-expected breakthrough - and now he’s suffering the consequences. Maybe the biggest performance improvement would come from finding a steady girlfriend.

isn’t it kind of normal for a kid to break through then have a difficult second season?

No doubt that he maybe thought he had made it and it has been difficult to adjust under Arne. But its also about rythmn and playing week in and week out to develop.
Last season he played 2300 mins. This season he has 350 mins so far. Big difference.

There is clearly a talented player there but I think he needs a good loan and play reguarly.

Fwiw he had a very good game yesterday. No foul at the end either.

If we’re sending Quansah out on loan, then we definitely need to sign a CB.

What happens after the loan, because, like puppies, new CB signings are not just for Christmas?

A loan is possible / but so is just knuckling down in training and working hard, so that when the chance arises you can put in a solid performance.

A young player that is developing need to play regularly. Just training and waiting might not be the best for everyone.

Yep, a load of these Quansah stories in social media. He seems to be using his fame for things outside football rather than building on his performances from last season or maybe now he is not playing, shifting focus to other things?. Hopefully someone in the club is having a good chat with him or we should bring a CB in new year.

All this OF stuff happened like a year ago. He’s a young kid who probably has 18 hours of his day to fill outside of football.

Centre Back is the hardest role to make it as a teenager. I think he'll come good, but he's hit a bump in the road with his confidence and is rightly behind Ibu who was for me our best defender before he got injured.

OF hookers would behead their own mother and stick it up themselves for another subscriber. I wouldn't read much into it.
Regardless of what the reason for his lack of concentration, he looks way off from being 1st team ready. I would rather we buy a CB who can rotate between VVD and Konate and we don't the fall off.
I suppose Gomez can cover LB. I know we aren't going to spend the dough.
Unless reinforce now we will rue thar decision and think what could have been in the summer.

I don't know whether he'll ultimately make it or not... but... I'm wary of the "he's young, he'll be fine" line of thinking. We've seen countless young players come through, look decent for a spell and then fade into obscurity. Even Flannagan had a moment - I remember some being quite impressed with his early showings.

Anyways, as said, CB is a hard position for a young player to establish themselves in, particularly at a top club, unless you're lucky and great.

For me, I'd see how he gets on for the rest of the season. If he continues to look ropey, I think he'd be better off going out on loan and getting consistent game time somewhere.

It's a difficult one, actually. My instinct was that he was good last season and will come good again. After all, he came into the side earlier than expected last year so establishing himself as back up in a group of four centre backs as the least experienced one is probably really where he should be.

That said, I'm sure we wouldn't be as forgiving if he hadn't been so good last year and if we weren't winning anyway. The appropriate thing I think is to see how things are at the end of the season.

Supporters are so fickle it's unbelievable. A few weeks ago Bradders was being written off for not 'pushing on' from last year after a handful of minutes and then after a few games finding his feet he's MOM against Madrid in a barnstorming game. We all know younger players are slightly less consistent and we all know that it is hard coming into a makeshift defence, even for a more experienced player. Quansah is only getting minutes either out of position or in such makeshift scenarios. I actually thought he had a largely good game yesterday. He's going to be a terrific player for us.

I said that, but you are correct - it was a glib comment. There is, of course, no guarantee that he will be fine. I was more making the point that the fact he hasn't progressed in a straight line since last season shouldn't be a particular surprise.

He will either be fine, or he won't, and if it's the latter we will move him on & replace him

Agreed that yesterday he seemed switched on. The previous game he looked devoid of confidence.

He got a huge slice of luck with that non-call as last man. If it was the other way around on Salah we'd be raging saying it's a foul. Regardless of whether he went down very easily.

If we had cover at the back, he'd benefit from a loan, but we don't have cover at the back.

Centre backs don't usually come into their best until mid 20s, so there's no need for knee jerk reactions.

He certainly doesn’t look anywhere near as good as he did last year and I think Slot is a big factor in that but clearly not the only one.

I think we’ll see him leave in the summer.

Not seeing what all the fuss is about, he's had nowhere near the sufficient game time this season to warrant the scrutiny he's received, besides the disastrous cameo against Fulham - what stinker has he put in? He's an inexperienced young lad learning a new style of play, having 1 or 2 nervy/shaky moments in games is nothing out the ordinary.....we're nit-picking his every mistake so much so we've now even taking a moment in a game which he wasn't penalised for, but will use it against him because.....we think the ref got it wrong and should've been sent off?

Yep, but also signing a 4th senior CB doesn’t help his chances of getting more games in future.

While I hear you about getting game time elsewhere, there’s also a lot to be said for training regularly with the other CBs, learning the patterns of play for OUR team rather than someone else.

I look at it like, as a minimum, there’s a 2-legged League Cup Semi, a FA Cup game against lower league opposition and 2 Champions League games where we can rotate.

That’s min of 5, and you’d have to think there’s another FA Cup game there.

I reckon that’s plenty of games for him to get into some form and be pushing for minutes in the league.
